6 Page 5 This Compeiion is designed o encourage enrepreneurial acivism among sudens by recognizing and rewarding hose who presen deailed plans on designing and creaing new business enerprises, drawing on heir own ideas and invenions or hose of ohers. The Compeiion provides a forum for hese sudens o presen heir new venure plans o invesors, receive meaningful feedback, have he opporuniy o sar a new business, and apply classroom learning o real world projecs. The business plans mus propose venures ha will be financially profiable, creae new jobs, and be lawful. Individuals and eams proposing new venures can have advisors and coaches, who may be faculy members, business execuives, or enrepreneurs. While his is encouraged, i is no required. Execuive Educaion Conac: bizdean@nmu.edu The College of Business has hisorically offered a variey of coninuing educaion opporuniies o respond o local needs and ineress. These evens occur eiher hrough a need recognized by he College, such as offering imely and relevan opics in he speaker series, or a he reques of he communiy or indusry. The CPEs for CPAs is an example where he College has provided coninuing educaion credis for accouning professionals, a heir reques. The Fund is an innovaive experienial learning program where business sudens in wo upper division finance courses (Invesmen Analysis and Porfolio Theory) mee regularly o evaluae naional and inernaional economies, indusry condiions, and corporae performances. Using his informaion, sudens selec buy and sell socks and bonds wih he goal of increasing he long run value of he Fund. The sudens also develop he invesmen policy ha guides heir decisions on where o inves he monies. The Fund sared wih an iniial sum of $200,000 provided by he College s alumni and friends and Norhern Michigan Universiy.

The Cener for Economic Educaion and Enrepreneurship and he Seaborg Mahemaics and Science Cener provide a wide variey of professional developmen opporuniies for eachers and adminisraors across he Upper Peninsula. NMU also works wih a number of schools in Michigan s Lower Peninsula, Norhern Wisconsin, and Chicago. Addiionally, NMU works wih five public school academies (charer schools) in Michigan.

Inernships for NMU sudens wih business, indusry, and service providers are criical o qualiy employmen preparaions. The Respiraory Therapy Program represens a collaboraive effor beween Marquee General Hospial and he Clinical Sciences Deparmen which will resul in sudens being awarded an associae s degree. Cliffs Naural Resources The School of Technology and Applied Sciences works closely wih Cliffs Naural Resources o prepare enry level echnical employees for boh he Tilden and Empire mining/processing operaions. Associae Degree programs in Indusrial Elecrical and Indusrial Mainenance, along wih baccalaureae degree programs in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Indusrial Technologies, and Elecronics Engineering Technology; prepare graduaes for employmen wih his major local company. Managemen a Cliffs Naural Resources views he echnical programs a NMU as virually a sole source provider of enry level echnical alen o heir mining/processing operaions. Addiionally, NMU saff and faculy are in he beginning sages of developing a company specific appreniceship program ha will serve he mining operaions as well as he proposed nugge processing plan expansion. 9 Page 8 Cliffs Naural Resources furher relies on NMU o provide on-going facor esing and skill upgrade raining for exising workers. This esing and raining requires working labs equipped wih he indusry s highes echnology manufacuring and processing componens. The company parners closely o assis NMU in acquiring much of he needed lab equipmen. This level of cooperaion is dependen on, and evidence of, a close working relaionship beween academics and indusry. American Eagle Airlines (AMR) An excellen working relaionship exiss beween he NMU School of Technology and Applied Sciences and he AMR Sawyer Mainenance faciliy resuling in 30-50% of he sudens graduaing in he NMU Aviaion Mainenance program being hired by AMR. Regional Organized Labor Unions Apprenice raining for four area rade unions is locaed in he D.J. Jacobei Cener a NMU. The Local 7 Shee Meal Workers, Local 8 Iron Workers, in addiion o he Local 506 Plumbers and Pipefiers, have all locaed heir regional raining base o he Jacobei Cener. In addiion o he apprenice raining, journeyman upgrade sessions wihin each rade jurisdicion will also be offered. Each year, from Augus hrough June, nearly 700 hours of insrucion akes place. The Operaing Engineers Local 324, locaed in Howell, Michigan, has chosen Norhern Michigan Universiy as is regional raining cener for heir annual January session. Food Service Indusry In response o changes in Michigan s food safey laws, NMU conducs mandaory food safey cerificaion courses. All food service indusry businesses including hose closely linked wih he criical regional ourism indusry are able o have local access o regulaory raining. TeamTech Moor Spors TeamTech offers sudens inernships and is a major supporer of he NMU Sociey of Auomoive Engineers (SAE) suden club which builds mini Baja vehicles o compee wih oher naional and inernaional universiies. Pioneer Surgical Technology A close working relaionship coninues beween NMU and Pioneer Surgical Technology, a Marquee based designer and manufacurer of orhopedic implans.
