In 2008, he grade poin average for accouning courses was 2.3 (ou of 4.0), compared wih a deparmenal average of 2.7 and a college average of 2.8. Insead of looking ou a a room of sudens who have no idea wha we re alking abou, my insrucors now see a room of sudens wih he lighbulb on in heir heads. Afer his change, I saw a significan increase in performance on he muliplechoice porion of he exams, wih performance increasing from he firs es hrough o he las (figure 2). A he beginning of each semeser, I give sudens a course calendar oulining he due daes for all assessmens. I assign homework and quizzes wihin MyAccouningLab. Sudens are allowed an unlimied number of aemps on he assessmens, bu hey mus adhere o he sric due daes: I do no accep assignmens lae no for any reason. In conjuncion wih he miderm and final exams, I hold wha I call a closeou sale whereby I reopen seleced homework and quizzes so ha sudens have a chance o improve heir scores. The underlying purpose is o help sudens prepare for he exams, which are adminisered in MyAccouningLab during a specified exam period. I began using MyAccouningLab in Prior o ha, one of my colleagues had been using i for her online secions, and she highly recommended i. She did no, however, convince me o adop i. In response, I creaed an opional course and gave exra credi o sudens who used MyAccouningLab. Today all assessmen, wih he excepion of cerain exra credi, occurs in MyAccouningLab. For each chaper, sudens are required o complee one homework and one quiz. Homework assignmens may be compleed unil he sar ime of he exam covering he corresponding chaper; lae compleion of homework resuls in a 20 percen penaly. Quizzes may no be compleed lae. Three exams are delivered hrough MyAccouningLab and are weighed 14, 21, and 35 percen, respecively. I recommend ha my sudens access he PowerPoin presenaions, videos, and oher ineracive MyAccouningLab resources and ha hey specifically selec hose resources ha will mos aid in heir undersanding of he maerial. MyAccouningLab enables me o move much of he course assessmen and assignmen review o ouside of class ime. Previously, I would adminiser quizzes and review homework and quiz soluions during class, which ook approximaely 50 minues each week. I now save nearly 12 hours of class ime over he course of a semeser, which I fill wih addiional lecure and in-class aciviies. Similarly, he auomaed homework and quiz grading in he program save me an addiional hour ouside of class each week. MyAccouningLab also helps ensure ha I adminiser fair exams, and i minimizes he risk of sudens cheaing. Through he homework and exra-credi assignmens, sudens gain access o all of he end-of-chaper maerial from he ex, and exams are pulled randomly from his same quesion pool: all exam quesions are of he same ype and level as he homework problems. Prior o MyAccouningLab, ha suden would have had o drop he class. Wih MyAccouningLab, a suden in such a circumsance can easily remain curren wih he course curriculum. And upon reurning o class, he suden can be up-o-dae on he course maerial as well as all assignmens. I ve had a fanasic experience wih MyAccouningLab. I has oally changed he way I each. Mos imporan, my sudens love MyAccouningLab and are learning more because of i. As a resul, sudens become more engaged in he course conen and score higher on he exams. Tex Managerial Accouning, 2e, Karen Braun, Wendy Tiez, and Waler Harrison Jr. Managerial Accouning is required of all business majors a Sal Lake Communiy College approximaely 600 sudens a year. The goal of he course is o inroduce sudens o managerial accouning and begin providing hem wih he skills hey will need o evaluae manufacuring coss wihin a company. Topics include job, aciviy-based, and process cosing; fixed- and variable-cosing ools; break-even analysis; budgeing; balancing scorecards; and he ime value of money. I adoped MyAccouningLab in fall 2009 mosly because of he program s immediae feedback on homework problems. I was also very impressed wih he Sudy Plan and is abiliy o build suden undersanding of conceps wih which hey have he mos difficuly. I assign required homework for 20 percen of he final course grade, as well as media assignmens and recommended homework assignmens ha do no conribue o he course grade. I also srongly recommend ha sudens use he Sudy Plan, hrough which hey can earn exra credi. In my opinion, he Sudy Plan is a magical ool ha gives sudens he addiional pracice hey need o maser he conceps. Wih he ime I save grading homework, I develop learning aciviies for my sudens and give hem more individualized aenion. In addiion, when sudens me wih problems in a paricular homework assignmen, I can see exacly where hey are running ino difficuly. This helps me respond more appropriaely o each suden.
