12 Program Name: Welding Academic Dean: Garry Krause SELF-STUDY SUMMARY REPORT Program Information Team Chair: Mike Holtorf Divisional Dean: Mike Boyle Process Used to Complete the Self-Study Meeting format (in-person, IP, conference calls In person group meetings and IP. etc.) Number of meetings 2 live group meetings and 2 IP meetings. How was the self-study handled? (as a group, The information was worked through as a group. assigned to individuals to report back to group, etc.) Additional comments: Summary of Findings As you completed this self study section of the program review, what areas "stand out" in your program? Please explain. What has surprised you? Please explain. List two or three of the items identified through your self-study that you will focus on to make improvements to your program. When/where in your program will you implement these improvements? What methods (direct or indirect) will you use to assess the success of this implementation? Good overall retention. The lack of production workers on the Advisory Committees. This was not noticed until the review. Work with admittance counselors to better ensure potential student s understood what welding was about and that they really want to be in the program. Students will become more proficient/ comfortable converting decimals to fractions. Recruit production workers on to each campus Advisory Committee. Potential new students welding program understanding will be ongoing. Decimals to fractions will occur in blueprint reading course and in partnership with the math instructor. New Advisory Committee members will be recruited in Direct. 9

13 What new outcomes or benchmarks do you hope to achieve through these recommended changes? Additional comments: Hope to achieve improved student retention and elevated student math success. 10

14 SELF-STUDY CATEGORY RESULTS Program and Category Program: Welding Category: WITC Program Statistics PLUSES (Strengths, Best Practices) DELTAS (Areas in Need of Improvements) Overall FTE increased. Statistics reflect only a minimal attrition rate; retention is good. Graduate satisfaction is over 90%. Enrollment cap was reduced on each campus to better fit the lab s capability. Select one PLUS item and explain the root cause: Select one DELTA item and explain the root cause: What items in this category MUST be addressed on our improvement plan? What items in this category MIGHT be addressed on the improvement plan? What items in this category may be considered a BEST PRACTICE OR INNOVATION? All areas need improvement Job placement is reduced due to downturn in the economy. Some students return to work on the family farm and never enter industry. Retention impacted by students who enter for financial aid and leave when they get their money, or find that welding is not for them. Overall FTE increased due to the addition of Ashland s welding program. Retention is fairly good with only one to two students being lost per campus per year. Some students enter the program to get financial aid exit once they get the money. Some students enter the program and leave after they determine they do not like welding. Welding staff must work closer with admittance counselors to make sure potential students have a good understanding of what welding is really like and to ensure that students truly do want to enter the welding profession. Enrollment cap was adjusted to better fit lab space. Team Rating Please indicate by an (X) the team rating of your program on this category. TARGET SCORE ANALYSIS X THRESHOLD SCORE ANALYSIS Program: Welding Indicator Actual Target Threshold What practices might be causing this performance? I651 Job Placement - Related Employment There was a regional economic decline which was coupled with the new addition of the Ashland campus (startup) welding program, which is not well established in that community. J551 Non- Traditional Gender I351 Job Placement - All Employment There is a lack of a non-traditional welding career events hosted on the individual campuses. There is a limited web presence of non-traditional students, and high school classroom visits are not targeting classrooms with a high percentage population of nontraditional students Student job placement is currently dependent on the core program instructor. There is no full time staff specifically assigned to student job placement. 35

42 Program Future Trends FUTURE TRENDS AND EXTERNAL FACTORS Welding 1 Lean manufacturing in welding processes. 2 Possible shift from flux core to metal core for worker health/safety. 3 Smaller welding machines which are better able to control wave shapes. Graduates will require the skill to adjust settings properly on a broad range of 4 welding machines. 5 The use of 90% argon and 10% shielding gas instead of a 75/25 mix. External Factors 1 Shortage of welders due to retirements. Employment should remain consistent or have slow growth (excluding retirement 2 replacements). 3 Welding may be a cyclical industry with a 10-year repetitive employment pattern. Technical school graduates do not seem to want to move to follow welding 4 employment opportunities. 5 Aviation industry in economic decline. 39
