3 Introduction At Hereworth, while participation is mandatory, success is strived for and celebrated across all areas of the school. Developing and acknowledging strength through the awarding of Colours and Prep Fixture Pins gives boys tangible recognition for their efforts. Application process There are a number of badges you can apply for and these include: Prep Fixture Pins (any applicable year level) >> Bronze (10 matches) >> Silver (15 matches) >> Gold (20 matches) Junior Colours (Years 4, 5 & 6) >> Academic >> Cultural >> Citizenship >> Sport (various) Colours and Full Colours (Years 7 & 8) >> Athletics >> Boarding >> Chess >> Choir >> Citizenship >> Cultural >> Skiing >> Sport (Rugby, Football, Hockey, Tennis, Cricket, Softball) >> Swimming Identify the badge you want to apply for and fill out the application form. Tick all the criteria you meet and add your name and class to the top of the form. Photocopy the form and submit it to the person(s) who need to sign it off. HEREWORTH COLOURS & BADGES 3

4 Badge display & etiquette Badge display On the left hand side of a boy s blazer the following badges will be displayed: >> Prefect s badge (if attained), followed by colours or full colours in any of the areas listed >> The highest awarded badge should be displayed - not, for example, a first hockey and a full hockey. These will be ranked with a prefect s badge at the top of the blazer, followed underneath by green, red and black badges in that order >> As a Year 4, 5, 6 student, the Junior Colours badges would feature at the top of the left lapel of the blazer On the right hand side of a boy s blazer the following badges will be displayed: >> Chapel monitor s badge at the top (if awarded) followed by any school service badges i.e. squad leader, librarian, art manager, chess manager and choir manager >> Only the highest or most current badge is displayed i.e. awarded that year, not from previous years Badge etiquette >> The owner of the badges is solely responsible for their placement and security >> You cannot wear the badge for a role of responsibility that you no longer hold >> Remove all badges that have been superseded e.g. remove Junior Sports Colours when you earn Sports Colours >> Only wear the highest level of Prep Fixture Pin >> Always keep your badges level and equally spaced >> Lost badges need to be replaced 4 HEREWORTH COLOURS & BADGES

6 General Sport Rugby, Football, Hockey, Cricket, Tennis, Softball Prep Fixture Pins (Bronze, Silver and Gold) The following pins are awarded to individuals who accumulate a given number of 1st team prep fixture matches in both winter and summer sports: >> Bronze: 10 matches >> Silver: 15 matches >> Gold: 20 matches Colours (Red Badge) This is a participation-awarded badge. Criteria Individual must play (take the field) in four prep fixtures for a 1st team. Full Colours (Green Badge) This is a performance-awarded badge and can only be presented to boys who have already received their Colours. Full Colours Form Individuals must accumulate 100 points based on the criteria provided in the Full Colours form. Upon completion, the form must be submitted to the Director of Sport. The final decision will then rest with the Team Coach, Director of Sport and the Headmaster. Note When a team wins a national title or an individual is selected to represent New Zealand in an open, age group, or development team/group which competes in an event or represents New Zealand, this achievement results in an Honours Bar being awarded to the individual/team. 6 HEREWORTH COLOURS & BADGES

9 Athletics The awarding of Hereworth Athletics Colours is based on the original ancient Greek definition of athletics: Sports, exercise and games that require physical skill and stamina Athletics Colours Six criteria constitute the awarding of Athletics Colours. Criteria may be used only once. Represents Hereworth School in or at: >> Hastings and District Schools Cross Country Championships >> Hastings and District Schools Athletic Championships >> Triple Peaks Endurance Race >> Peak Trail Blazer Fun Run >> Hawke s Bay Interschools Cross Country Relay (Teams of four) >> East Coast North Island Cross Country >> Patoka Cross Country >> PCT Challenge Competition team member who goes to the National Event >> Any National Athletics Association sanctioned event (e.g. Tri Events, Cycling Road Race, Mountain Biking etc.) Full Athletics Colours Four criteria attained in Year 7 & 8 constitute the awarding of Full Athletics Colours, provided the individual has already received Athletics Colours. Criteria may be used only once. >> Hastings and District Schools Swimming event >> Swim in three or more championship events at Hereworth Swimming Sports (Individual) >> Hawke s Bay Intermediate Schools Swimming Championships >> Be a member of any relay team that records a top three placing at either of the above events >> North Island or New Zealand recognised/sanctioned swimming event Full Swimming Colours Three criteria attained in Year 7 & 8 constitute the awarding of Full Swimming Colours, provided the individual has already received Swimming Colours. Criteria may be used only once. >> Top three placing in three or more championship events at Hereworth Swimming Sports (Individual) >> Top three placing in any finals event at the Hawke s Bay Intermediate Schools Swimming Championships (individual) >> Break a Hereworth School record in a swimming event. 15 Skiing Skiing Colours To be awarded Skiing Colours the individual must meet one of the following criteria: >> Be selected in the 1st Ski team (top five) to represent Hereworth at the North Island Primary School Ski Championships >> Win a national title or is selected to represent New Zealand at any level* * This achievement results in an Honours Bar being awarded to the individual HEREWORTH COLOURS & BADGES 15

17 Chess Chess Colours Four criteria constitute the awarding of Chess Colours. Criteria may be used only once. >> Represent Hereworth in three Chess tournaments >> Participate in the Hereworth Chess Club for six consecutive terms (with 80% attendance) >> Achieve two or more top three placings in Interschool/Hawke s Bay team or individual tournaments >> Is a finalist in one or more Interschool/Hawke s Bay team or individual tournaments >> House Chess competitor >> Hereworth Chess Cup winner Full Chess Colours Three criteria attained in Year 7 & 8 constitute the awarding of Full Chess Colours, provided the individual has already received Chess Colours. Criteria may be used only once. >> Be selected as a Chess Manager >> Represent Hereworth in four or more Hawke s Bay Interschool tournaments >> Winner of the Hursthouse Cup - Year 7 or 8 >> Top three placing in an individual external tournament >> Be a member of a team that wins an external tournament >> Must show a positive contribution to Chess as recognised by the teacher in charge of chess - attendance, arrives on time, participation, behaviour and support HEREWORTH COLOURS & BADGES 17

Criteria may be used only once. 30 Citizenship Citizenship Colours Individuals who satisfy the following criteria may be deserving of Citizenship Colours. Final decision to be made by the Headmaster and Senior Management Team. An individual must consistently demonstrate our school motto Non Nobis Solum in attitude and action. He should show a high standard of behaviour and a positive attitude towards all areas of school life. His general contribution to the life of the school must be worthwhile and significant. The recipient s contribution will always be positive and in the spirit of a good citizen of the school. The Personal and Social Qualities section of the school report will constitute a large part of determining which students are deserving of Citizenship Colours. Other aspects to consider are: >> Leadership roles >> Selflessness >> Tuakana-teina relationship with younger students >> Wider community service Full Citizenship Colours Individuals who satisfy the following criteria may be deserving of Full Citizenship Colours. Final decision to be made by the Headmaster and Senior Management Team. This is a natural extension of the Citizenship Colours award. It is an extremely high accolade and requires a boy to demonstrate all the attributes set out in the Colours award but to a very high degree and on a consistent basis. It is highly likely that the recipient would be a Year 8 boy as this is an over time award. 30 HEREWORTH COLOURS & BADGES

36 Junior Sport Junior Sport Colours This award is available to boys in Years 4, 5 and 6 only and recognises the positive contribution that our junior sportsmen make to Hereworth. A boy must achieve five of the following criteria and submit the Junior Sport form before he can be awarded his Junior Sports Colours. The award criteria is a combination of performance, selection and participation. >> Is selected to represent Hereworth in four or more Junior prep fixtures >> Achieves a top three placing for his year group in Sandy Lane (Use only once) >> Achieves a top three placing for his year group in six or more championship events at either Hereworth Swimming Sports or Hereworth Athletic Sports (Cumulative and repeats permitted) >> Is selected to represent Hereworth at three or more Hastings and District Schools sports events >> Participates in the Havelock North Peak Trail Blazer event (Use only once) >> Participates in the Weetbix TRYathlon event (Use only once) >> Plays (takes the field) in a First Team prep fixture (Use only once) >> Winner of the Kasper Cup - Year 1 to 4 >> Winner of the Smith Cup - Year HEREWORTH COLOURS & BADGES
