Dear students and parents, It has been an exceptionally busy term for all of our students and staff, and we have much to celebrate in our achievements over the past term. Our annual Art Exhibition and our Sports Awards Evening were both well attended, and enabled us to give due recognition to the efforts and achievements of so many of our students. Likewise, our production of The Canterbury Tales showcased the considerable talents of so many of our students. Such occasions serve to remind us of the wealth of opportunities that the school provides for the achievement of excellence, and that all our students are blessed with special talents, which it is our job to identify, nurture and develop. On Wednesday 5 July we welcomed the current Year 6 students who will be joining us in Year 7 in September. The current students are our best ambassadors and they did a fantastic job on the night of supporting the school with a flavour of their Drama performance. The Year 11 Prom and the Post 16 Ball were both held at the Windmill Village at the end of June and I was so proud of these young adults and all they have achieved at their time in this school. I wish you all the very best in whatever you decide to do in the future and I look forward to welcoming the Year 11 students back in September to join our Sixth Form. As the school year finishes there are a few staff in particular, who I would like to wish well as they move forward onto pastures new. Mr Bishop, Deputy Headteacher who is leaving to take up Headship at Finham Park School, Mr Miller, Assistant Headteacher & Head of Sixth Form, who is moving to Bablake School, Mr Spencer, Assistant Headteacher and Head of Science who is moving to King Henry VIII School. Mrs Steele, Mr Gill, Mrs Meacham, Mr Walsh, Miss Meakin, Mr Hibbard, Mr Stevens and Mrs Thomson will also be leaving us at the end of the year. Reverend Vickers is also retiring at the end of this academic year and we wish them all well for the future. We welcome to the school in September: Miss Cartwright, Mr Curran, Miss Davoile, Ms Deudon, Ms Harbron, Mrs Harrison, Miss Hellend, Mrs Henden, Ms Andrews, Ms Karunnakaran, Ms Kennedy, Mr Kiddy, Mr Matibiri, Mrs Milbourne, Mr Ward, Mr Sanders, Ms Steele, Mrs Grainger and our new Chaplain Lou Peet. We also wish all of our students the very best in the A level and GCSE results days in August, the details of which can be found on our website. Whatever you are doing this summer, I wish you a restful break, in the knowledge that we shall all return refreshed and reinvigorated for the exciting challenges which lie ahead in 2017/2018. 4 Blue Coat Values: What do they look like in 2017? Throughout this academic year we have been exploring the key values which underpin Blue Coat School. First founded as a Charity School in 1714 and later as a Church of England Comprehensive in 1964, we have a rich history of education rooted in Christian ideals. Our school motto of Christian Education with Care remains above our gates, but we wanted an opportunity to explore what this means in practice for the school in Earlier in the year, all of the school staff met to discuss the values we see embodied by our students, as well as those we would like to see further developed. This was followed by a series of assemblies, meetings with the School Council and a questionnaire to parents and guardians. The results of all of these discussions were analysed and there were some clear patterns in our shared priorities, largely focused on the ideas of how we treat each other, learning from Jesus example of Servanthood. Our students themselves have been voting for their favourite values over the past few weeks and have highlighted Respect, Integrity, Kindness and Hard Work as themes which they care deeply about. Next, we will be looking to develop these ideas into a new Mission Statement for the school, giving us a fresh purpose as we strive to make our excellent school even better. Farewell Mr Bishop It has truly been a privilege to be part of the highly skilled staff team at Blue Coat Church of England School over the past 12 years. Joining the school in 2005 as Head of Science, I was very quickly impressed by the high level of active teaching and learning that took place in classrooms. This, coupled with the above and beyond that I was witness to, humbled me as I saw staff across the school deliver a superb quality education; this being delivered in some challenging circumstances at times. As I move to Finham Park School as its next Headteacher in September, I look forward to continue working with the staff and students of this school as we seek to ensure that no student within the care of our schools gets left behind. As I prepare for my first Headship, a verse from the Bible has given me great encouragement. It is in view of this promise from God that I am excited and energised by the challenge He has set before me. For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11) May we always seek to serve Him in full obedience, wherever He may lead us. Blue Coat Church of England School is a truly special and unique place within the city of Coventry; it will always remain a special place to me. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, governors and parents for their hard work and dedication to improve the life chances of all our students. I would also like to thank the students for the fun they have brought and for their energy and enthusiasm in making a success of themselves. Onwards and upwards! Mr Bishop

Congratulations Anthony Harries Congratulation to Anthony Harries in Year 13 who has been selected from over 2,400 submissions for the Royal Academy of Arts A-level Summer Exhibition Online, a showcase of the UK s young artistic talent. Having work chosen to appear in the A-level Summer Exhibition Online is a great achievement for young artists in the UK. Many of these students will go on to develop their talents at art school and their careers. Students from all over the UK enter their works and the exhibition showcases in a rich variety of styles and media: from drawing and video to sculpture and prints, painting and photography. Anthony has accepted a place to study Photography at Coventry University after receiving all 5 offers after interview at universities around the country. Held to coincide with the world s largest open-entry exhibition, the Summer Exhibition, this online equivalent for artists aged 16 18, signals an exciting future for art in this country.

Giant Atlas Moth Blue Coat students have encountered a giant Atlas moth as part of their Science lessons. Visually stunning, and with a range of cunning adaptations to both evade predators and find a suitable mate, it has been fascinating to have such an impressive live specimen in school; even Year 11 students have taken a break from revision to visit our newest addition. The moth has been kindly lent to the school by Michael Salvo in Year 10 who writes: Entomology (The study of insects) has been my hobby ever since I was 6 and started as a ladybug I kept in a jar. Now I have world-wide connections with other enthusiasts, raise numerous butterfly and moth species and have an extensive collection of butterflies and moths which plays a part in museum studies. Providing data and locations, specimens I have collected will contribute to future scientific studies involving environmental sciences and forensic sciences to name a few. I have been keeping multiple species of moths and butterflies for 5 years, which includes the strikingly beautiful Atlas moth. They are the largest species of moth entomologists can get their hands on. I presented one specimen to the Science department who have taken quite an interest! Mr Spencer Head of Science

Maths Challenge 2017 Students across all year groups achieved excellent results in the UK Mathematics Challenge examination. We are delighted with the results this year and celebrate the success of these talented mathematicians. Special congratulations must go to George Hunt Y13, Mark Lynch Y12, Joshua Liley Y10, Joseph Michell and Mia Farndon Y9, Thomas Doran Y8, Ethan Mallard and James Liley Y7 for going through to the next round. The pupils who entered the team challenge, led by Mr Law, also achieved great success. The senior team, comprising George Hunt, Tharani Chandran, Mark Lynch and Joseph Duque Lopez came a creditable 4 th. The intermediate team, again led by Mr Law came 6 th. The team of Joseph Michell, Luke Torpey, Hannah Jarrett and Vishal Mavadiya did themselves proud. Many thanks to Mr Law for his input and enthusiasm. Ms C Coventry Head of Mathematics

Basketball The team played a game on Tuesday 6 June away at Kenilworth School and the boys were great ambassadors for Blue Coat on and off the court. These boys are excited to play and do their best with positive attitudes. They were respectful towards the opposition and referee. The boys also extend their respect to their team mates and support and encourage each other whilst having a good time. The game was fast and furious with Blue Coat scoring quickly and then pressing and causing turn overs which led to quick baskets for our team. The score went up and it was shared all around the team. Our team defensive play, unselfish passing and fast counter attack made it difficult for Kenilworth to get in the game. Our boys remained respectful and sportsmanlike throughout the game. Kenilworth worked hard and never gave up despite a one sided score in our favour. It was wonderful to see how well the boys played and acted as a group and individually. It was easy to be very proud of the hard work dedication and effort they have put in. 11 Interfaith Games In May 2017 I took a group of Year 7 and 8 girls to play in the girls football tournament as part of the interfaith games. Schools travelled from as far as Peterborough and there were 8 schools represented. We continually improved as the day went on, losing our first 2 matches but then winning 3 to get into the semi final. Unfortunately we lost in the semi final but went on to win the 3rd v 4th place match to gain bronze medals. The girls showed great team work and respect and I was extremely proud of them. Miss H Parker Teacher of PE Year 7 Football was a productive season for the Year 7 football team. The highlight of 2016 was undoubtedly beating Sidney Stringer 4-0 away. The highlight of 2017 was a 5-4 win at home to Bishop Ullathorne on May After we crafted a 4-1 lead early in the second half, Bishop Ullathorne played well to take the score back to 4-4. Victory was secured by Captain Harry Donaghy, who stepped up to complete a well deserved hat trick in the dying embers of the game. Aside from scoring his hat trick, Harry deserves special mention for organising a tribute to the memory of his Mathematics teacher, Mr Martyn Rice. Harry organised both a flower tribute and a 1 minute silence before the game. Well done Harry. You are a true leader. Praise is also due to Bashar Idris for bagging a well deserved brace in this fixture. We look forward to our Year 8 football journey. Mr F Peacock

Exceptional Student Attainment Award! Congratulations to our staff and students on the excellent achievement. The school are placed in the top 10% of non-selective schools nationally for student attainment in the 2016 end of Key Stage 4 exams. This is a testament to your hard work. Mrs Shelley Headteacher

Mrs Shelley meeting MP Jim Cunningham Jim Cunningham MP visited the school to discuss concerns regarding reductions in school funding with the Headteacher Mrs Shelley. As part of his role as MP, Jim has been visiting schools across Coventry to establish how changes at a national level with reduced funding, will affect local schools. As a long time friend and supporter of the school for many years, it is good to know that concerns from all Coventry Headteachers are being vocalised by our local MP. One Good Soul BC Students are taking their talents to Edinburgh! Students will be performing a brand new musical over the course of two weeks this Summer. The original score written by Laurence Trowsdale-Stannard was a roaring success last year and we are certain it will be a hit in Scotland. If you would like to show your support and sponsor the production or book tickets please go on the following website-

American Missions Team Visit We were blessed by having a team of 19 young people and adults from a church in Reston (Near Washington DC) join us at the start of July. They were on a Christian missions trip to Coventry and were involved in all sorts of wonderful community building initiatives including working on community allotments, a community café, child and youth work, helping churches and a new church plant and being with us at Blue Coat for a week! The team worked with Years 7, 9 and 12 in their RE lessons on the themes of justice, Christian faith and experience, forming relationships and having great conversations with students and staff. They also delivered year assemblies including worship, dramatic sketches and testimonies. As part of their service to the school they also helped litter pick, prepare the set and costumes for The Canterbury Tales, encouraged our year worship bands, and made the chaplaincy a warmer, creative, prayerful space to be used by all students and staff. As a chaplain, I am often blown away by the ability and gift in young people. Seeing young people so passionate about faith and the practical difference it is making in their lives and in their communities encourages me that we are seeing God s Kingdom coming, and His will being done, on earth as well as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). Our students have caught the vision with several now keen to engage in local social justice projects, to consider being part of cell groups in September, and to use the chaplaincy space as a quiet and contemplative place amid the busy school day. I have the immense blessing and privilege of serving the students, staff and families at Blue Coat from September as School Chaplain. I look forward to meeting with you all over the coming weeks and months and sharing my heart for the Blue Coat community a very special place where I pray the Kingdom values and ethos shine light into every heart and into the local communities God has placed us in. Have a wonderful, relaxing, blessed Summer break. Lou Peet (Blue Coat Chaplain)
