OUTDOOR EDUCATION KAPISHYA RAFTING TRIP This trip has got to be one of Ndubaluba's best! Paddling down the Mancha River was an experience not to miss. This Rumdoodle river experience can be likened to an epic movie with never ending scenes. Bouncing through white rapids, high water jumps, tube jumping into a rapid and being made to practise flipping our rafts and then all jumping back in! The scenery was also stunning. Palm trees, palm nut vultures as well as enjoying a picnic lunch above the beautiful Tusia waterfalls. The hot springs were idyllic and so relaxing, just what one needs after an adventure filled day! The hike to the historic Shiwa house required the spirit of an intrepid explorer. Hiking through a beautiful game park and climbing the hill overlooking breath-taking views of Lake Shiwa and the house is an unforgettable experience. Well done to all our Kapishya explorers! NDUBALUBA SURVIVAL DAY Could you.. Survive a night out in the deep bush in the middle of the rainy season without a tent, making your own shelter from natural forest material (leaves, sticks and grass)? Survive with no food apart from wilderness foods found in the forest? Try making a delicious supper with edible leaves, wild mushrooms and edible forest fruits! (Well we did also give them half a potato each). Earn a home cooked meal by completing the Ndubaluba lunch quest? This required competence in trap, catapult, bow and arrow shooting as well as having to swim their way out of a deep water situation by making their own life jacket from basic materials such as plastic bottles and cans. CONGRATULATIONS TO CHENGELO S HARDCORE ULTIMATE SURVIVORS! As one of the survivors put it: this was my best Ndubaluba camp so far! Mr Collin McMaster, Senior Outdoor Instructor
LAKE TANGANYKA IYA GOLD EXPEDITION Earlier in the year, a group of 7 students completed their IYA Gold expedition across Lake Tanganyika. It was a days canoeing across the lake to get to Luke s beach, which was our base for the remainder of the expedition. The students then navigated their way to the top of Kalambo falls and explored the surrounding area in canoes. We narrowly escaped a family of hippos that had recently taken up residence in the Kalambo River. And managed to get onto dry land just inside Tanzania for all of 5 minutes before being kindly asked to leave! We really felt God s hand of protection over us throughout the trip, and it was great to see more of His amazing creation. Miss Anna Dews, Outdoor Instructor PREFECT TEAM The 2013 prefect team is made up of 15 upper and lower sixth formers. We have been appointed to lead and help the school to function. Our motto is: strength through unity and achievement through prayer. We serve as role models to the rest of the school and work alongside staff. We carry out duties such as supervision in the dining hall as well as during prep, sport and free time. At the beginning of Term 1, we arrived 3 days before any other students for Induction. We got to know each other as a team and did some forward planning. We had a day of Prefect Training at Ndubaluba Outdoor Centre where we were given very practical tasks to complete against the clock; this challenged us to really think about planning, teamwork, motivation and time management. Then we assisted staff in welcoming the new Form 1 students for their Induction and tried to get to know them and help them settle in with lots of different activities. At the start of the year we were given a challenge; to come up with a project to benefit the community. We have decided to help Mkushi General Hospital, to offer help and to raise funds to provide some basic necessities. Our target is to buy an industrial dryer. So far, we have managed to raise KR5.200 form the students. We are delighted with this and are very grateful for the generosity of Chengelo students (see Variety Show article for more details). We are planning a fund -raising presentation to parents and friends of Chengelo on Friday 26 th April 2013 at 19:00 in the Grand Palace Hotel in Lusaka; we would value your support. Arisa Heald (Head Girl), Twaambo Mukuni (Head Boy), Mbaki Banda (Deputy Head Boy), Nachilala Nkombo (Deputy Head Girl)
SCHOOL HALL UPDATE Great progress has been made on this important project in the past year. Fund-raising has been successful thanks to: The levy paid by parents last year. We have collected KR so far and expect this to increase to KR New pupils will also join this scheme. The PTA had already raised KR and have a major Dinner/dance event planned in Lusaka on 10 th May see separate notice on this huge effort we expect all Lusaka parents and many others to be present! Our UK based Chengelo Education Trust has agreed to release funds equivalent to KR in addition to the K already raised by supporters there. This brings the total to KR HALLELUJAH! This gives us sufficient funding to commence construction and we plan to do that this year. Drawings are in hand and one of our parents, Mr A K Chatta, a professional architect, is kindly overseeing them. The total cost of the project is approximately KR Costs can be reduced significantly if parents are able and willing to supply resources or skills from their businesses, e.g. cement, steel, stone, transport, lighting, shade control, etc. Please contact the Director, Mr Harold Rea, director@chengelo.sch.zm if you are able to assist in any way. We plan to have a dedication of the site during our 25 th celebrations on the weekend of 14/15 th September and hope you will join us for that significant occasion. 5 FORM 5 HUMANITIES, SCIENCE, CAREERS & DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY TRIP TO THE COPPERBELT Thursday 24th January, Form 5 students together with our teachers went on a two days trip to the Copperbelt on an educational and careers tour. The purpose of this trip was to help us understand the operations of different industries and organizations in our country. The places we visited included ZAMEFA (Luanshya), Gem Stone Training Centre (Ndola), Indeni Refinery (Ndola), Mopani Mine (Kitwe) and Bank of Zambia (Ndola). Luckily enough the lessons learnt from various organizations covered a variety of subjects to benefit all students on the trip. Business Studies, Chemistry, Design and Technology, Geography were just a few of the subjects included. We were able to see and experience the industrial and organization environment to compliment what we learn in class. It was an exciting trip and each one of us enjoyed ourselves. The teachers Mr. Kalilanji, Mr. Miti, Miss Katundu and Mr. Ngungu were terrific and they organized everything perfectly! It was definitely a good way to start the year! Salifyanji Simwanza, Form 5B SIXTH FORM CAREERS TRIP TO LUSAKA Upper Form Six students under the leadership of Mr. Kalilanji and Mrs. Renaux undertook a careers trip to various organizations and gatherings in Lusaka to gather necessary information for their university and career choices. On their way to Lusaka, they visited Mulungushi University in Kabwe where the Academic Staff gave an insight on the courses offered. The following day students visited the International Universities Consultancy Firm (C&N) where they received a motivating talk on career choices and university destinations. Later in the day, they attended the careers expo hosted by ZICA focusing on professional business courses. In the afternoon Lafarge plc hosted the group where they received encouraging talks from workers who just graduated from universities. The talks where motivating and full of advice on the choices students make. Students had an opportunity to go round on the plant to see the production process. It was amazing at the huge investment that Lafarge has made in the production of cement in Zambia. On Saturday, students attended the National Finance Literacy Conference hosted by the Bank of Zambia at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre. The program was targeted at the youth, encouraging them to become good financial managers in their personal capacity and business circles. The whole trip was very educating and informative in areas pertaining to career prospects of the Sixth Formers. Mr Boniface Kalilanji, Head of Careers and Humanities FORM SIX CAREERS TRIP TO SOUTH AFRICA Mr. Kalilanji and Mrs. Renaux will be taking a team of Form 6 students on a Careers and Exposure tour to South Africa. They will be visiting universities, historical places, companies and the Zambian Embassy in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria respectively. The team leaves Zambia on 9th April and return on 18th April. We are asking parents and the rest of the school to commit the team in prayer for safe travel. Mr Boniface Kalilanji, Head of Careers and Humanities
THE BACK PAGE CHENGELO COPPERBELT FOOTBALL & NETBALL CHAMPIONS! The annual Copperbelt ISAZ Football and Netball Festival took place at Chengelo from 1 st to 2 nd March. Seven schools, Amano, Kalulushi, Lechwe, Mpelembe, Ndola, Nsansa and Simba came to compete in this event with Chengelo as defending champions in all three sports: Girls and boys football and girls netball. Backed by support from fellow students, staff and workers the Chengelo players put up splendid performances to defend all three trophies. The top goal scorer for the girls was Kabwe Chewe while Chitalu Malulu, Sungani Banda, Virginia Sondashi and Verocia Chiluba also added to the Chengelo scores. The boys football was much closer with Chengelo beating their rivals, Nsansa, with just one point to emerge as winners. Goal scorers were Moses Manongo (2), Mubanga Sampa, Webster Nonde (1), Mubanga Sampa (1) while Kachinvya Silwamba (5) finished the tournament as top goal scorer for the boys. vs Amano won 3 0 vs Kalulushi won 1 0 vs Mpelembe won 1 0 vs Lechwe won 2 0 vs Ndola drew 0 0 vs Nsansa lost 1 2 vs Simba drew 1 1 The girls netball produced a surprise performance from Amano who played very well against the traditional winners Chengelo in the final. Amano put up a strong performance to finish the first half at 3 4 down. However, the Chengelo team went on to win the match The captain Sungani Banda played a big role in getting her players to play as a unit making the Chengelo team a tough act to follow. TRIATHLON-BIATHALON Two weeks later Chengelo held its first Triathlon-Biathlon Event after a nine year absence. It was an exciting event for everybody and the occasion was lightened up with the participation of parents from the Mkushi area and one of our governors, Mr Ian Parsons who came all the way from Mazabuka! The main race was composed of a 9km cycle, a 600m swim and an 8km run. Even though the Chengelo students put up a brilliant performance, it was one of the Chengelo staff teams that finished as winners setting a new record of 59 minutes, beating the old one by a whole 7 minutes. Well done to Mr and Mrs North and Mr Brad Coyle for this brilliant performance. Mr McMaster could not defend the record he set for the individuals category but came in second position while the race was this time won by Daniel Parsons and Mr Ian Parsons coming in third position. NATIONAL NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS On March 16 th, Chengelo set off for the Netball Association of Zambia (NAZ) 2013 Open Championships. Chengelo took part in the schools category with the intention of retaining the top prize they last won in This tournament is always a difficult on to win as the games are a lot more competitive than the standard in ISAZ competitions but Chengelo did not disappoint. On their way to the final match, Chengelo beat two time finalist Mkamambo from Chongwe, Pestalozzi from Lusaka, ACS Academy from Ndola and the Chengelo B Team. Unfortunately, the girls were unable to retain the title as national champions after losing to Kasama Girls Secondary School of the Northern Province. Three of our players, Ng andu Bwalya, Natasha Kapepula and Malitela Mapani were later selected to be part of the Zambia U20 National Team that will compete at the Zone Six Games in Zimbabwe.
CHENGELO CROWNED ISAZ 2013 FOOTBALL & NETBALL CHAMPIONS AGAIN! For the second year running Chengelo had teams represented in each of the three categories, in the ISAZ Finals. This year the Finals were held at Baobab School, Lusaka. After an early departure from Chengelo we could have forgiven teams for a slow start, but this was not the case. All three teams attacked their early pool games with energy and enthusiasm. The Netball team won all their pool games against Baobab, LICS and Ndola Trust to top their group. The Girls Football team won two and drew one to top their group as well. The Boys Football team beat Baobab and Lechwe and drew against Rhodes Park to top their group. All three teams progressed to difficult semi final matches. The Netball team faced Banani while the girls and boys football teams faced International School of Lusaka and American International schools respectively. The Girls netball team easily disposed of Banani with an 18 5 score while the girls football struggled for goals in the first half but completely outclassed the ISL team to win 4 0. The Boys Football team beat a very tough and physical AISL 1-0 with the only goal coming from Mukosa Chakufyali. This meant that all teams had progressed into the Finals with the potential of repeating last year s success. The Netball team played Boabab in the Final and surrounded by a large crowd of supporters of the hosting school. This did not deter the girls in any way as they went on to retain the title for the 14 th year running! The Girls Football team faced a very skilled AISL for the second time in the tournament and finished the regulation time at a score of 0 0. This took the match to penalties, leaving both sides nervous. However, a safe pair of hands from Doreen Mtonga and her shooting skills gave Chengelo a save and a goal. Kabwe Chewe would finish off the game with a shot to give Chengelo the win they very much deserved after a splendid performance. The boys football team faced Nsansa in the final match of the tournament. This was against the history that Nsansa had beaten the defending champions in their last match between them at the qualifiers. The highly motivated sides started the match on a fast pace with Chengelo holding most of the possession. It was a great help to the Chengelo team when Moses Manongo opened the scoring with an angled shot to give the defending champions a much deserved lead. The start of the second half was no different. Chengelo worked well in a good demonstration of team work and co-ordinated play for Moses Manongo to give Chengelo a 2 0 lead. Nsansa would not give up easily and pushed hard for a comeback but this would not happen. Thanks to the exceptional goalkeeping performances by Henil Desai who made two brilliant saves to help Chengelo retain their crown as ISAZ 2013 Football Champions. The team sadly said good bye to the tournament s best player, Kachinvya Silwamba who goes away to Kitwe for both education and a push at developing his football with Power Dynamos FC. Kachinvya was also joint top scorer with Moses Manongo while other scorers were Daniel Petros (2), Webster Nonde (1) and Mukosa Chakufyali (1). For the second year in a row Chengelo have won all three competitions, a feat not achieved by any school before. This is a fantastic achievement. Our sincere thanks to all the players who represented Chengelo so well, and also to Mr Kaluba and Mr Sichinga for the countless hours dedicated to practice and for their expert coaching of our successful teams. Mr Francis Sichinga, Head of Physical Education & Mr Tim Foster, Head of Sixth Form
