1 Edinburgh College Character... through Nurture, Learning and Service T4 Week 7, November 21, 2018 Remembrance Day Year 9 student, Seanna, travelled to Villers Brettoneux, France to lay a wreath at the recent Remembrance Day services. Throughout the year, Seanna had actively encouraged others to make felt poppies for a number of commemorative wreaths. Staff Update It is with much sadness that we say goodbye to our friend and Primary art teacher, Mr Lindsay Ralph. His creative and enthusiastic teaching, willingness to help with Primary concert staging and many other contributions will be missed. Mr Ralph s talents and skills have been truly appreciated by students and staff. Exams Finished Years 10, 11 and 12 have all finished their 2018 exams. Year 10 began transition to Year 11 with a VCE and Careers Day which included guest speakers and representatives from various institutions including, Box Hill TAFE, Australian Catholic University, RMIT, Eastern College Australia, Federation University and LCI Melbourne. Basketball Star Visits Edinburgh Professional basketballer and captain of Melbourne United, Chris Goulding, visited Edinburgh College as an ambassador of Elastoplast to film and interact with students. ARCHER-Elastoplast has been commissioned to identify an opportunity to provide resources (classroom lesson plans, activity worksheets and supporting resources) to schools with the focus on Prep, Years 1 & 2. The resources would align to the Australian School Curriculum and focus on an early introductory program on first-aid. This program will be launched at the commencement of the 2019 school year. Year 2 felt very privileged to be invited to be part of the action with other students from both the Secondary and Primary being given the opportunity to meet Chris. Mrs Tara Charman will be the new art teacher for She has taught art for many years at Mt Evelyn Primary. Welcome, Mrs Charman, to this role. - Mrs Pascoe Mr Ralph and Mrs Charman

2 Year 6 Run Circuit Sports Year 6 students organised and ran a sports program designed to involve all students from Prep to Year 5. They seemed to enjoy the experience of teaching the younger students the activities they had prepared. Circuit Sports was fun as we saw each kid s face light up when they arrived at the different stations. - Zoe It was so much fun to teach the kids our games. - Gracie It was nice to see how happy the kids were. Our sport circuit made them happy. Charlotte C and P It was fun to teach all the students a new game that they might not have played before. 3 Reality Check As part of Humanities studies, Mr Brooks is running a 4 week program aiming to prepare Year 8 and 9 students for life after leaving school and what a post-school world looks like. Students are given a series of questions about what real life is like outside of school. Hypotheticals are involved such as, what type of house would you like to live in?, what type of transport would you like to drive? and what lifestyle choices would you make?. With wish lists in hand, students are allocated a job and an income. The challenge is to see who can manage to keep all the items on their wish list with their level of income. Various members of the Edinburgh College alumni will lend their expertise and advice from their chosen fields including a surgeon and senior lawyer. Turning the view of trades on its head are experts in metalwork and welding, and an electrician who will share what it takes to manage staff in a high stress environment. They will also hear from a sports entrepreneur who will speak about what it takes to push through limitations and achieve personal best results both on and off the field. Student Baptism The family of Isabella in Year 6, would like to invite her friends and teachers to attend her baptism on December 1 at the Ringwood Adventist Church, 28 Mullum Mullum Road, Ringwood. You are welcome to stay and enjoy lunch with us afterwards. If you are able to bring something to contribute it would be appreciated. If you don t have a computer, internet access or an address, please call the Sustainable School Shop for assistance If you have books, calculators etc you no longer need and are in good condition or better, then list them for sale on the website as this will help another family looking to buy. - Mr Oemcke Futsal Comp Bottleneck for Finals This week, Thursday s games were both leading teams playing those at the bottom of the ladder. On Friday, the two middle teams were fighting for the third finals spot. Instead of blowout wins on Thursday, we had a pair of nail biting games, both with 3-2 score lines and deciding goals scored in the last minute. The close contest between the two even teams was a 5-0 wipe out. A firing Team Mya- Taylah gave an incomplete Team Joey their first loss in four games. Team Tom got out of jail in the final seconds of the game when the captain put in a penalty against Team Tarkyn, who had stunned themselves by scoring in the first minute. On Friday, a brace from Kynan, plus Kai's long range goal of the tournament meant that Year 8 cleaned up the Year 7 s. Great work, Year 5! A 100% growth rate, if continued over a year, equals one year of growth in the Mathematics Curriculum. A 225% growth rate means two and one quarter years of growth will occur, if the growth rate is continued over a 12-month period. Generally the average growth rate in a textbook classroom is approximately 60%. - Mr Oemcke

Host a Student Edinburgh College will be hosting a group of four Japanese boys through AIIU for Term We are hoping to have the students hosted by Edinburgh families so this opportunity is open to all College families.
