2 Welcome Thank you for your interest in joining the staff at Ipswich High School. This is an incredibly exciting time to be joining the school. We have recently welcomed boys to the Prep School and the Sixth Form and will become fully coeducational via a Diamond Model approach in the next academic year. But perhaps the biggest change is that we will open our first boarding house next September. We are now looking for exceptional staff who can provide outstanding pastoral care for our boarders. The boarding house posts represent a significant opportunity for you to contribute to our story and set the tone for our boarding community one which will be focused on the happiness and achievements of our pupils. 3 The School Ipswich High School is a leading independent school in Suffolk, proudly educating hundreds of pupils between the ages of The school has long enjoyed a high profile across the region, and is much respected for both its academic success yearon-year, and for its superb pastoral care and enrichment activity. With feeder schools spread across East Anglia, the school typically sees its greatest demand for places from the counties of Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk. Founded in 1878, the school has been at its impressive home in Woolverstone, near Ipswich since We have an 84 acre campus and make use of our superb natural and inspirational surroundings. The school is renowned for its academic excellence, including some of the strongest GCSE results in the region, yet remains a uniquely warm and nurturing community underpinned by incredible pastoral care. Teaching staff contribute to our extensive Enrichment Programme, which includes the Duke of Edinburgh scheme and World Challenge. At this, exciting, transformative stage in the school s history we have begun to admit boys throughout the school via a Diamond Model approach and will soon be opening a boarding house, allowing us to reach a wider market.

4 Boarding at IHS Ipswich High School is a successful day school that is introducing boarding from September The school aims to enable its boarding pupils to develop academically, socially and emotionally in a homely and friendly environment, where mutual trust and respect between pupils and staff are the fundamental guiding principles on which the boarding will be based. At Ipswich High School, the individual is highly valued and all pupils are encouraged to live in harmony with one another. Boarding pupils will be accommodated in our Grade II listed Dairy House from September 2019 and the surrounding, state of the art, renovated Barn House from We will house a small number of full-time boarders from September 2019, growing to around 55 boarding pupils after a two-three year period of development. We aim to welcome international and home boarders and to create a home away from home feel.

5 The Candidate/s The school is looking for an/a pair of experienced houseparent/s who will provide outstanding pastoral care for the boarders in our brand new, co-educational boarding house. The successful candidate/s will be qualified teachers (if a pair, only one candidate needs to be a teacher) and have considerable experience of running a boarding house; they will also have excellent interpersonal skills and an understanding of the needs of boarding pupils and parents. Our Houseparent/s must have thorough knowledge of the day-to-day running of a boarding house and expertise in establishing and maintaining pastoral records and safeguarding are essential requirements. The Houseparent/s will be important members of the school community and, as such, must be prepared to be fully involved in school life. Remuneration The salary will be commensurate with the importance of the post and with the experience and qualities of the successful candidate/s. If applicable, the children of the successful candidate/s may be educated at the school at preferential rates. Please see below. Three-bedroomed accommodation within the boarding house is provided. 7 Job Description Job title: Houseparent/s Responsible for: Matron, Resident Graduate Assistants, Evening Pastoral Staff, Housekeeping team Line Manager: Assistant Head (Wellbeing) Key Purpose a) To have full understanding of the implications of the National Minimum Standards (NMS) for Boarding Schools for welfare and pastoral care in the House b) To set the very highest standards of care in the boarding house and to ensure that boarding staff, parents and pupils understand the aims and objectives of boarding in the House as well as the principles on which community life in the boarding house is based c) To be resident within the House during term time and to be responsible to the AH(W) for the general welfare and personal development of all the boarders in the House, in accordance with the School s policies and the NMS d) To ensure the safety and security of all boarders at all times when they are in the school s charge; to ensure that adequate arrangements for back-up cover are made e) To build a strong, personal relationship with each of the boarders in their care, to identify the needs of each and to support other members of the House team in working continuously towards meeting those needs f) To manage the House team to ensure excellent pastoral care for the boarders in the House g) To promote excellent working relationships with parents and guardians and to respond to their concerns h) To lead and manage the House team and to make a positive contribution in all areas concerning the welfare of the boarders i) To draw up a strategic development plan for the House as required by the Head, and to be responsible for its implementation j) To play an active part in marketing the School through attendance at School fairs as required, all relevant marketing events and taking tours for prospective parents k) To support all main School events though attendance and welcoming parents and guests proactively l) To manage the budget delegated to the House effectively m) To liaise with the Assistant Head (Co-curricular) to organise a full and popular programme of activities for the pupils in the House n) To teach a reduced timetable.

8 Key Responsibilities To ensure the safety and security of all boarders at all times when they are in the school s charge (including weekends, whilst on trips and outings); to ensure adequate supervision of the boarders and adequate arrangements for back-up cover are in place To create and sustain a home from home environment where the pupils will feel happy, safe and supported, and in which they will thrive individually and collectively To be aware of, and to respond to, the needs of individual boarders, including those from different cultural backgrounds and to be aware of the changing needs of all boarders as they develop To liaise with the Matron and the School Nurse to ensure that boarders medical requirements are properly catered for; to ensure that medications are dispensed in line with the medical protocol policies and to administer first aid as required To use effective monitoring and reporting systems to maintain accurate boarding pupils records for progress, welfare, health, emotional problems, achievements and misconduct; to provide such reports and references as may reasonably be required To counsel boarders, at a time and place which is conducive to good communication, concerning any emotional, academic, social or behavioural problems they may have; to inform the Designated Safeguarding Lead of any safeguarding concerns; to fulfil the requirements of the school s safeguarding policy To establish and maintain healthy routines for each boarder, including those of personal hygiene, sleep and diet To address disciplinary matters in a firm but caring and consistent manner; to liaise with the AH(W) and/or Head of Year (HoY) in any matter of serious concern To liaise with the Assistant Head (Co-curricular) to ensure the boarders have access to, and participate in, a varied and popular programme of activities To liaise with the Estates Manager and Catering Manager to ensure for each boarder the provision of a comfortable living environment and to ensure that all boarders needs are met, including at the start of any term To ensure regular communication with parents and/or guardians including information regarding the welfare and happiness of their children, as well as routine contact and updates To maintain accurate records of all personal information relevant to the care of individual pupils, and to liaise with the School office to keep records up to date To induct and to integrate into the House all new colleagues, and to work with the AH(W) to support them in accordance with the School s induction programme

9 To hold regular House staff meetings at which minutes are taken and circulated to the Head, AH(W), members of the House Team, and to include Tutors where appropriate To represent the boarding house at Governors meetings when invited and to liaise with the pastoral governor over issues specific to the boarding provision To provide detailed bids for the House allocation from the Budget for the finance manager To be acquainted with the School s Health and Safety policy; to ensure that all Health and Safety guidelines and rules are followed and that the students are also made aware of and comply with them; and to ensure that all boarding house risk assessments are up to date and distributed appropriately To carry out any reasonable duties as requested by the Head

10 Person Specification Qualifications/Attainment Qualified teacher, educated to degree level First aid at work qualification or willingness to obtain one BSA qualification or willingness to obtain one Full, clean driving licence (Desirable for partner if a pair) Knowledge base Good understanding of the National Minimum Standards for Boarding and ISI regulations and how they apply to boarding, both day to day and strategic levels Understanding of Keeping Children Safe in Education and safeguarding policy/processes Level 3 Safeguarding training or willingness to undertake training Experience Prior experience of working in boarding and pastoral care Prior experience of running a boarding house EAL experience Desirable Skills required Proven ability to empathise and relate to young people Stamina and the ability to lead staff and young people when under pressure Strong leadership and organisational skills
