3 Changes Year 6 will be the third group of children to take the new tests. They are being assessed against the new National Curriculum (September 2014). They will be the first cohort to have completed the new KS2 curriculum. The tests are more difficult, to reflect the more challenging National Curriculum. They will not receive a level (e.g. Level 3, Level 4, Level 5).

5 Monday Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) Two papers. Paper 1 focus on grammar, punctuation and vocabulary minutes - 50 marks Paper 2 spelling test. Pupils are read sentences and they write in the missing word minutes - 20 marks Total of 70 marks.

6 Tuesday Reading Test The test consists of a reading booklet and a separate answer booklet. Pupils have 1 hour to read the texts and answer the questions. The questions are worth a total of 50 marks. The reading booklet will include three unrelated texts which should include a mixture of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Greater focus on pupils comprehension skills. The least-demanding text will come first with the following texts increasing in level of difficulty.

7 Wednesday - Maths Paper 1 arithmetic minutes to complete 36 questions - 40 marks Some questions can be answered mentally. Some require the children to use written methods.

8 Wednesday and Thursday - Maths Papers 2 and 3 reasoning minutes - 35 marks Questions which will require children to use and apply their maths skills. Could be problem solving or word problems. Total of 70 marks for the two tests. Added to arithmetic test gives a total of 110 marks.

9 Writing There is no test for writing. This is based upon teacher assessment. School must decide whether pupils are: - working below the expected standard, (PKF, PKE, PKG) - working towards the expected standard, (WTS) - working at the expected standard, (EXS) - working at greater depth within the expected standard. (GDS)

10 Changes to Writing for The government recently announced some changes to the writing teacher assessment for KS1 and KS2. Writing will no longer be a secure fit this meant that children had to achieve all of the standards in the framework. Teachers are now able to use their professional judgement as there will be a more flexible approach to the assessments. This has potential benefits for some pupils with SEND.

14 What happens when the tests are done? The tests are sent off to be marked. School receive results on Tuesday 3 rd July and report to parents with the end of year report.

15 Scaled Scores Children who take the test will receive a scaled score of between 80 and is the expected standard. Pupils scoring 110 or more have achieved a higher score.

16 Raw Score to Scaled Score Conversion Marks needed to achieve 100 (expected standard). Test Difference Reading 21/50 26/50 +5 SPaG 43/70 36/70-7 Maths 60/110 57/110-3 Pupils will receive a scaled score for tests they take. 100 is the expected standard. The number of marks needed to achieve 100 could change slightly.

Continue to support with homework (revision guides), Ensure pupils are on time for any booster sessions and school each day, Read at home every night, Timetables Rockstars, Keep supporting and encouraging your child to do their best. We want them to enjoy Year 6, feel prepared for the tests, but not to be panicking or worried about them.
