1 Steve Bross Educator In The Workplace Journal Entries Objective: To develop a solid understanding of silk screening and complete skill set for a t-shirt and garment business. Monday August 6 th 8 to 4 The first day at O Neill Graphics was spent going over the basic organization levels, different work areas, supplies, suppliers, and clients past and present. - Brian O Neill works for himself which can at times can cause certain sections of the business to put on the back burner - For example, Brian s business is in an old funeral home and needs a lot of structural improvements such as building walls for offices and extending out floor space for new equipment. The problem is, it takes a lot of time to not only continue moving his product but also keep up with the long term - building goals. - The summer days are tough for the business too, with two heaters going at 360 degrees the screen printing room can become quickly unbearable. Brian tends to do most of his work in the early morning and at night after the sun goes down. Daily Activities: - Most of the day and into the afternoon was spent in the basement burning screens for the up and coming jobs. - One of the bigger jobs was a six color job for Chucks Hot Dog Stand, this was 6-up front and back job for about 200 shirts. - It was truly a learning experience of quality control to ensure even clean screens and adjusting registration. - After the screens were done and drying we ran a 1 color job for a soccer camp. I think I could load, print, and dry about 1 shirt to Brian s five. Tuesday August 7 th 6 to 2 The morning started out quickly and it became very hot in the printing room. I wasn t to happy about starting at 6:00 AM but by 10:00 I already had to make a shirt change, luckily there are plenty of t-shirts laying around to wear. - Things really got going fast and we were able to finish up 4-1 color jobs, surprisingly when you get the hang of it you can do about a shirt a minute if not faster. - One of the things that came out with working with Brian was that he had a need for a web site, even though most of his business is word of mouth, an internet presence would help with getting new customers.

2 - Since the temperature was about 120 we moved down stairs to the office area and began working on what a site might look like for O Neill Graphics - This process included looking to register a domain and see what hosting might cost. - We also began putting new artwork together for the next set of shirts that needed to be printed. Daily Activities: - Screen printed 450 shirts for 4 job - Cleaned and prepared screens for emulsion - Worked with design ideas for a web site project - Delivered products to for different clients Wednesday August 8 th 6 to 2 This was a big day for me because I never was involved with a 6 color job before. - Setting up the registration for this took a lot of time - After about 8 to 10 test prints we were able to start printing the front left pocket even though it was only about 6 inch s across it still had six colors - The process is very time consuming to print because of the fact that each of the colors has to be flashed dried for about 5 seconds before you can do the next color. - Most of the day was spent just completing this 6 color project Daily Activities: - 6 color project - Screen registration - Color mixing for six color job Thursday August 9 th 6 to 2 After 3 full days of working with Brian I suggested that we take the day to try and get some of the other projects that he has started a little further along. - Moving equipment around - Fixing a few or the pieces equipment that need a few replacement parts - Created a file system for his art work that for the reason of just not having time has been laying around - Organized his stock of samples - And started thinking about how he could maximize his front room as a show room. When we started this project I thought of it being more of workhorse kind of day but, really I learned a lot from this kind of process. - Moving around some of the older equipment gave me a little bit of knowledge about how technology is always evolving - I also enjoyed seeing all of the different apparel that can be used to screen on

3 - The one thing that I saw was an older style hat printer that in my opinion is a much easier way to print on then the one in my class room. - Even though we hardly put a dent in his long term goals, there seemed to be an improvement in workable space overall. Friday August 10 th 6 to 2 Friday was a probably the day meant the most to me because we sat down and reviewed what products we were exactly using, from inks to cleaners and lighting. - Building a screen printing area in my school takes more than just the main equipment (which we already have) - We set up a list of inks that I would need to buy - Went over all of the cleaning and prep materials - Made a list of spray adhesives and spray cleaners for the printing process - Went over all the timing issues for the screening burning process - Discussed the different squeegee issues, angles and pressure - Brian had made a few copies of different tutorial and clipart programs for me to back to use in the class. After we spent a lot time at his shop we went over to the school and spent the afternoon looking at what I needed to do to get to my screen printing area more efficient and up to date. This week has given me so much information that I am excited to start putting into place the new techniques I have learned. Overview: When I started out this week I had a pretty solid understanding of what I wanted to get out of it. I mainly needed a list of products to use in the silk screening process. What I ended up doing was developing a better understanding the overall process and a few tips and tricks to take back to school with me. A big part of CTE is developing a task list for the students to follow to insure that they can complete a career objective. In this case I was able to see the entire process from start to finish. Even though I have a nice list of objectives for the students to learn, to see Brian in action kept the big picture in sight. Today students still need to learn how to work with all the tools from computer to press, but they still need to develop the soft skills. Brian not only is a solid craftsman of the trade but he is a manager, people person, salesman, accountant, contractor, cleaning personal and a delivery boy. This is where the students tend to fail seeing the big picture. It is always nice to be able to back up what you try to teach the students with real life experience.

4 Name: Visual COMMUNICATIONS A CENTRAL MONTCO TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM T-Shirt Design and Silk Screen T-Shirt Design is a great real world project. The fact that you actually can develop a product that could be mass produced and sold to the public is a great learning example. The simple fact is... your shirt could sell or not. Planning and production are everything and in the long run you will end up with a solid portfolio project. State Standards Academic Components: Math A Select and use appropriate units and tools to measure to the degree of accuracy required in particular measurement situations C Demonstrate the ability to produce measures with specified levels of precision. Reading. Writing, and Speaking E Establish a reading vocabulary by identifying and correctly using new words acquired through the study of their relationships to other words. Use a dictionary or related reference. Task Completion List For Unit FUD-013-0A Design a two color T-Shirt Design FUD-013-0B Print a two Color T-Shirt Design using basic silk screening process and registration Arts & Humanities A Know and use the elements and principles of each art form to create works in the arts and humanities. Visual Arts: balance contrast emphasis/focal point movement/rhythm proportion/scale repetition unity/harmony Foundation Year

5 Daily PT s / / 30 Possible Days Six and Seven Daily PT s / 30 Possible 8.5 Develop a professional advertisement for your product 12 thumbnail ideas Spend some time using the T-Shirt template to develop your ideas. (Design need to be school appropriate) - Try to think about 12 different concept ideas not 12 different versions of 1 idea - Think about your target market, who are you trying to get to buy your T-shirt design. Activity - Ad Development - Full Page and Spread Ad Design Goal - Complete a final ad to the level of professional finish This level of work is what is called your final design and layout, this should be done at your best level...portfolio - Headline developed by the student - Ad must include all of the type and art work x 11 vertical ad and 11 x 17 ad - Full color Ad - Must have description of product - Logo design - Product Two roughs After you have designed all of your ideas it is time to develop 2 final rough ideas. You might compare designs before you decide which idea is your best one. The most important idea of this process is that you do the rough designs as close to the final ideas as you can. All of your color options and illustration work needs to be tight and almost perfect. Activity - Ad Development - Full Page and Spread Ad Design Remember all step of concept and design will need to be complete this section of the project Safe Area 1/2 inch from edges of the paper 17 Safe Area 1/2 inch from edges of the paper Gutter Days One, Two & Three 11 Safe Area 1/2 inch from edges of the paper One final rendering - should be tight. After you are sure that you have picked the best idea it is time to do the final art work on the computer. Adobe illustrator is the best program for you to use in this process. Day Eight Turn in final printed art work to teacher for evaluation. Days Four & Five Preparing your screens for a two color Job The first step in getting your screen ready is to make sure the two screens that you are going to use are clean and ready to have emulsion placed on them. (Teacher will demonstrate this process) After the screens are clean... After the screens are clean and dry it is time to apply the emulsion, there are two different application techniques to use but we will just be using the dip and spread method with a small flat squeegee. (Teacher will demonstrate this process) Drying Your Screens and setting up art work Your screens will need to dry for about 24 hours before you can burn your images into them. After the screen are dry it is time to print out you color seperations and burn your screens. (Teacher will demonstrate this process) Once the images is burned, it is time clean out and dry the screens again... (Teacher will demonstrate this process) Daily PT s / 30 Possible Now that all of the work is done it is time to complete the two color T-shirt Design Goal - The most import thing for this project is that you complete one perfect shirt to be graded. If you want to print more you can do a run up to 10, remember if you buy the t-shirts from me it will cost you 2$ a piece. The printing process: Setting up your registration is a simple process because of the type of equipment we use at the school. (a pin register setup) The industry standards are not usually the same because of time and screen space, which for the most part will get registered by hand and eye. (Teacher will demonstrate this process) Students will use a two person work flow until you get the hang of it. The biggest problem is not getting ink on the shirt from because of having ink your hands. Having only one person handle the shirts will stop this problem. (Teacher will demonstrate this process) Setting and drying the ink is the last part of this process, when using a two color ink process the first color will need to be flash dried before you can print the second color this usually takes about 5 to 10 seconds. After both colors have been printed you will need to place the shirts under the dryer for about 45 seconds to cure the ink. If you are using a belt dryer the tempurture needs to be at about 360 degrees to insure the right amount of heat and time. (Teacher will demonstrate this process) Daily PT s 30 Possible 11
