1 AP Physics B: Summer Assignment 2010 There are some specific math skills that you need to be fluent with in order to be successful in this class. You also a graphing calculator, all of the time, and computer access, some of the time. The summer assignment isn t that long, I don t think, but each part will be vital for overall success, I think. Assignment 1. Send an to holtphysics@gmail.com. I send out a lot of notes, study guides, etc. through during the year. I will also be sending you the solutions to some of the other parts of the assignment over the summer through . You can check your work, and then, if you need help, you can ask or analyze the solutions. This will be kind of an example of how we will do some of the homework throughout the year. Assignment 2. Google. We only have so much time in class to cover content. If you want more than I, or your book, is providing, google some topics and see what you get. You can get a lot of power points, teacher and student made, by advance searching in google and choosing the power point file type. By the end of the year, you will probably have a couple of sites you like for information. I will be building a website to contain links and powerpoints that I think will be good for you. I want you to use this on the rest of the assignments. If you need some examples, look for some first. If you get stuck, me. Assignment 3. Right Triangle Trigonometry. In integrated science, you got an introduction to a lot of the things you will see in this class, but they were all studied in a linear method. Forces were applied in one direction (or opposite), collisions were head on, etc. In our class, we will look at the importance of angles in just about every topic. You have to understand basic, sine, cosine, and tangent of a right triangle and the Pythagorean Theorem. Find the measure of the third side of a right triangle using the Pythagorean Theorem given 2 sides. Find the measure of the other 2 sides of a triangle given a side and an angle measure. Find the measure of an angle of a right triangle using inverse trig functions.

4 Assignment 4. Lines of best fit. Often there are questions on the exam that deal will analyzing lab data. You need to be able to scale a graph to your data (including labels and units), plot the data, and draw the line of best fit. Once you draw the line, you should be able to select two points from the line to find the slope and y-intercept. The AP exam expects you to be able to do this by hand. You can google graph paper and print a sheet if you don t have any. If you search for how to draw lines of best fit, you will want to include the word algebra. Use the following data sets to complete assignment A dog was timed retrieving a ball from different distances. The data is in the table below. Time (s) Distance (m) Create a complete, labeled graph (including units and scale) from a data set. Draw a line of best fit for data. Determine the slope and y-intercept for a line of best fit. 2. A cart is set up on a lab bench. Force is applied to the cart to accelerate it across the table. The following data was collected. Force (N) Acceleration (m/s 2 ) Create a complete, labeled graph (including units and scale) from a data set. Draw a line of best fit for data. Determine the slope and y-intercept for a line of best fit. 3. You should be able to do this same work on your graphing calculator. If you don t know how, and don t have a copy of your manual, send me an , and I ll send you some step by step directions for your type of calculator. 4. Microsoft Excel. You will need to know how to enter data and analyze it for lab reports. Enter the data into a workbook on Microsoft Excel. Create at connected line graph. Include scale, units, and labels on your axis. Use Excel to find the equation for the line of best fit.

5 Assignment 5. Quadratic Formula. There are a few problem types we will have where you ll have to use it.

6 Solve each equation by using the Quadratic Formula. Round to the nearest tenth if necessary. There may be some equations where you get a negative under the square root, so there is no solution on those problems.
