1 CANYON CREST ACADEMY Syllabus and Course Requirements Please Print for Your Records and Only Return the Last Page Instructor: Course: Mr. Shay AP Calculus AB Welcome to AP Calculus AB. This Advanced Placement class is an exciting introduction to some of the wonders of mathematics. As this school uses 4 x 4 scheduling, we will cover many topics each day. This document will be the students and parents guide to the rules and procedures of our class. Please make sure this document and its contents are fully understood. AP Calculus AB is comparable to one semester of college level calculus. We will fully discuss derivatives and integrals of two dimension functions, as well as differential equations. You will learn not only the techniques of calculus, but also the applications and uses of calculus. You will be expected to discuss and interpret the topics graphically, verbally, analytically, and via tables. You will learn to think your mind will grow and you will find yourself doing amazing and fascinating things. The AP Calculus AB & BC Exam is on Tuesday May 9, 2017 at 8:00am. The exam is optional, and financial assistance may be available. Textbook: Calculus, Early Transcendentals, Sixth edition, Stewart, Cengage Publishing. Recommended Prerequisites: B test average or better in both semesters of Honors Pre-Calculus. Student Expectations: Students entering AP Calculus AB are expected to do the following things: - Learn concepts and skills quickly - Ask questions and self-advocate when confused - Show all work and effort on assignments - Handle the rigor of learning new concepts everyday and use new concepts throughout the course - Quickly recall concepts and skills learned in previous lessons to learn new concepts - Complete hours of homework for each math class period depending on the difficulty of the subject, the students work ethic, and the students skill level and conceptual understanding of the material Course Outline: Chapter 1: Functions and Models Chapter 2: Limits and Derivatives Chapter 3: Differentiation Rules Chapter 4: Applications of Differentiation Chapter 5: Integrals Chapter 6: Applications of Integration Chapter 9: Differential Equations Daily Requirements: Students should always bring the following to class: 1. Their homework 2. Their printed chapter notes and worksheets 3. A binder, straightedge, college ruled paper, graph paper, colored pens, pencil 4. A graphing calculator

2 Graphing Calculators: Homework: We will be exploring graphing calculators at a much more in depth level than previous courses you have taken. I recommend you have a TI-89, TI-84, or TI-Nspire. There is a limited supply in class, so I suggest you get your own for the course and the AP Exam. On our calculators, we will be doing basic tasks like graphing functions, adjusting the window, finding maximums and minimums, calculating the derivative at a point, and calculating an integral over an interval. Beyond just stating numeric answers, you will be learning how to interpret results and draw conclusions. Homework will be due the day of the test, with the exception of one assignment each chapter due the next day. It should be done in pencil with all appropriate work shown. It should be headed with name, date, period, and assignment description. The assignments will be graded on completion, student work, accuracy, and format with a maximum total of 10 points per assignment. Homework turned in with no name and/or not completed in pencil will have two points taken off of its score. Late homework is only accepted if student has an excused absence, he/she has a oneday grace period to turn in complete missing work for full credit. As assignments are listed online and always available from classmates, absent students are responsible for getting missed homework assignments. Class Notes and Worksheets: Students are responsible to print and have the necessary notes for each chapter (and other worksheets as indicated) from my website on the day they are required. If this task is not possible for your student (or family) to complete, please write me a note to explain the circumstances. Student Evaluation: Your grade in this course is based on tests, quizzes, projects, homework, class work, and the midterm/final exam. Grades are accessible through Aeries and will be updated at least twice a week. Progress Reports and Report Cards will be delivered electronically via the parent portal; parents will be notified by and phone when those reports are available. Please contact the counseling office if you need help setting up an Aeries account. Grades will be determined as follows: 1. Tests, quizzes, and projects 70% 2. Midterm/Final exam 20% 3. Assignments and others 10% Letter grade will be based on the standard grading scale: A B C D and below F An exam will be given at the end of each unit (100 points), approximately every week or two. Quizzes (10-50 points) may, or may not be, announced. Projects are being considered for this academic term. They may be a paper, presentation, activity, etc. When projects are assigned, appropriate points will also be assigned. There are no test and/or quiz make-ups for un-excused absences! Excused absences will be taken into consideration. If there is a need for test/quiz make-up, the absence must be excused and cleared through the attendance office within 48 hours and a parent contact has to be made. Absence from school shall be excused only for health reasons, family emergencies and justifiable personal reasons, as permitted by law, Board policy and administrative regulations. Make-up tests and quizzes will be given upon return of the student. If you are absent on a review day and/or on the day of a test/quiz, you are to make up that Mr. Shay pg 2 AP Calculus AB 8/29/2016

3 particular test/quiz on the day you return to class. Students who need to make-up a test or quiz may be given a test that is different than the original test. Make-up tests/quizzes may not include any extra credit problems. If you know about the absence ahead of time, please arrange with me possible make-up opportunity. It is important that students learn from their mistakes; therefore, test correcting is an important part in this class. After the test is graded and reviewed in class, students will have a period of one week to do test corrections. Students will be given multiple opportunities to make sure all questions are corrected and understood. By successfully correcting ALL of the mistakes on their test, students will receive a considerable curve assigned to each test. Assessments will not leave my classroom. Students must do all test corrections in my classroom by appointment, before school, during lunch, or after school. Students may also do test corrections during class time if the schedule allows for such activity. Academic Honesty: Violation of the Academic Honesty Policy might result in an F for the course. The San Dieguito Union High School Academic Honesty Policy is strictly enforced. Plagiarism is the use of any idea or phrasing of an idea traceable to a single source without proper acknowledgement. Plagiarism is also turning in someone else s work as your own or supplying your work to another student for him/her to use. Cheating is copying homework, websites, class work, quiz, and test answers from other students with or without their permission. Students who work together should not have identical work. In accordance with this district policy, copying, or any other form of cheating, will result in a zero for the assignment, parental contact, a referral, and appropriate disciplinary action. Please note that sharing a calculator during tests/quizzes is considered a form of cheating. Make sure you do not share formulas, questions, and/or answers on your calculators and/or your other electronic devices. Electronic devices such as cell-phone, ipod, ipad, laptop, etc. are strictly prohibited during tests and quizzes. Please do not give me reason to question your integrity. Class Standards: Canyon Crest Academy students will treat each other with respect and demonstrate respect for the role each person plays in the school community. Specifically, students should follow the Schoolwide Classroom Rules and the three B s: 1. Be respectful and polite (including no unacceptable use of language) to self, your teacher, your peers, and property. 2. Be on time (be ready to learn when the bell rings). 3. Be prepared. 4. No electronic devices (cell-phones, ipods, ipads, laptops, etc.) visible in the classroom unless instructed. 5. No personal note, including texting, writing and passing during class period.
