Course Description Are you planning a trip to Japan, meeting with a new Japanese client, infatuated with animé, or simply hoping to learn how to order at your local Japanese restaurant? This course emphasizes listening and speaking skills and is appropriate for students with limited time who want to improve their conversational skills quickly. The instructor will carefully select the vocabulary and grammatical patterns that are more frequently used in everyday conversation. Hence, the focus will be heavily on oral skills rather than reading and writing. This course targets students who have taken the first-year classes. However, students at the intermediate level can also refresh their conversational skills. Prerequisite: Students must know Hiragana, Katakana and simple Kanji. 3. Students Learning Outcome: 1

2 a) Comprehend and use fundamental sentence patterns to carry out simple conversation (ask simple questions and answer them in the present/future/past tense) b) Be able to converse in different speech acts such as compliments, apology & complaints c) Be able to carry out a TEL conversation in business situations d) Be able to order food at different eating places at a more advanced level (Using Keigo) e) Gather information in a continuing conversation f) Demonstrate the students awareness of the Japanese culture and customs through different speech acts g) Course prepares the students for further language acquisition and should arouse their interest in the Japanese culture/people 4. Methods of Evaluation: Methods of evaluation include class participation, mini skit by role-play (every day), mini quiz (role-play), final project, and homework assignments determined by the teacher. There will be a final project (Job Interview) on Sep. 10. The reason I will give you 20 % for your attendance/participation is because I would like everybody to actively participate in all the activities we do especially because the class is a conversational class. As a language teacher, I believe that unless you participate actively in class, you won t learn very much. Therefore, 20 % of the grade will go to your attendance/participation.
