1 Teachers' Notes These books have been written for pupils with special educational needs at Key Stages 1 & 2 who are learning the high frequency word lists as laid down in the National Literacy Strategy. This series s all the words for Year R to Year 2 inclusive. The books are designed to provide a multisensory approach to learning and two pages are allocated for each new set of words. The first page follows a set format of: saying, colouring, tracing and spelling (using the look - say - - write - check method). The second page provides a variety of follow-up activities as reinforcement work. Teachers should ensure that pupils understand the sentences in the cloze procedure exercises before beginning the work. Subheadings appear throughout these books to instruct the pupil on each activity. It is not expected that the child will, at this stage, be able to decode the subheadings unaided and the teacher is requested to ensure that the pupil understands all the instructions. However, it should be noted that the subheadings are repeated throughout the series and the teacher may feel it appropriate to teach the pupil their meanings to encourage greater independency. The Lotto Game is a revision exercise in which all the words addressed in the book appear. The teacher should prepare the game by providing each pupil with a photocopied game card. The master sheet should be photocopied and cut into individual words. These words should be placed in a bag or box. A pupil or the teacher should withdraw and read each word one at a time. The players should draw a line through a word on their game card (or place a counter on it) only if it has been read out. The winner is the first player to cross out all the words on his or her card and successfully read them back to the teacher. The pupil record sheet provides the teacher with the opportunity to note a pupil's spelling and reading scores of words addressed in this book. Learning Materials Ltd
