2 Aims of the evening: to give the context of Work Experience in respects to the DfE requirements for Post 16 programmes of study to provide clear reasons for the importance of Work Experience in the Post 16 study programme and why we would want all Sixth Formers to take part to hear some first hand accounts from Oxted students in Year 13 and how their experience has helped them to outline the process for Oxted Sixth Form students and the supporting paper work etc. to appeal for placements!!

3 Work experience is a key component of 16 to 19 study programmes and all students are expected to undertake work experience or some form of work-related training as part of their study programme non-qualification activity. This applies to academic, vocational and mixed pathways. Ofsted state that work experience must be purposeful and planned. 4 Why is Work Experience Important? You may think that the only point of doing work experience is for CV fodder. You probably think you ll just sit there twiddling their thumbs, or be given a stack of 2,000 envelopes to stuff, stamp and send. Although some work experience does involve doing menial tasks, it can still be very important. The organization All About Careers identifies 10 important reasons why completing work experience is beneficial to every young person

5 One In at number one: young people are more likely to be successful in their job hunt if they have done some good work experience. Well, over half of the graduate recruiters that took part in a recent research study by Highfliers said that, "graduates who have had no previous work experience at all are unlikely to be successful during the selection process and have little or no chance of receiving a job offer for their organisations graduate programmes.

6 Two If you haven t got a clue what career you want to do, work experience is a perfect way to sample all the career options out there. It s a way of exploring different jobs without actually committing to anything. You can dip your toe in the water without taking the full plunge.

7 Three It s the best way to get a real sense of your chosen industry. You ll get to speak to employees and ask them questions. You won t know what it s like until you get closer to the action.

8 Four Doing work experience shows passion and interest. Evidence that you have done work experience shows the employer that you are motivated to get into a chosen career and that you ve done your homework.

9 Five If you re floundering about and frankly aren t that bothered about your career, work experience might just be the kick up the backside you need. If you do a variety of different work experience placements, you might find something you are passionate about and get motivated.

10 Six Work experience gently introduces you to the world of work. You get to learn the dos and don ts, get work place savvy and learn to navigate your way through the jungle of office politics. Vitally, it ll give you an idea of the skills you might need to thrive in the workplace.

11 Seven It ll help you identify your own skills and perhaps even highlight the areas that you might want to work on. It will definitely give you a good understanding of your strengths and weakness.

12 Eight You might wow them so much that you ll manage to wrangle yourself a job!

13 Nine It s all about networking. It ll help you build up contacts and, you never know, they might even give you a heads up about a future job or recommend you to another company.

14 Ten And yes, work experience does give you something to put on your CV!

15 Eleven. You may even enjoy it!

18 High quality work experience The principles of a high quality work experience placement are that it: is purposeful, substantial, offers challenge and is relevant to the young person s study programme and career aspirations; is managed under the direction of a supervisor to ensure the young person obtains a genuine learning experience suited to their needs; has a structured plan for the duration of the placement which provides tangible outcomes for the student and employer; focuses on the skills required for that occupational sector; has clear roles, responsibilities and expectations for the student and employer; is followed by some form of reference or feedback from the employer based on the young person s performance.

19 What do Ofsted look for they report of Work Experience? Work experience should contribute to students overall development. For example, when considering outcomes for students, inspectors will explore how well they can develop their employability and vocational skills and personal effectiveness. Similarly, when inspecting teaching, learning and assessment inspectors will explore how well students on work experience have been prepared beforehand, the tasks they are set and whether they receive detailed feedback on their progress. The inspection of leadership and management will evaluate the extent to which work experience is purposeful for each student, how well it fits into the other aspects of their study programme and that appropriate steps have been taken by the employers to provide a safe environment. Students get employer references for their performance on work experience.

20 Work Experience at Oxted School Work Experience Week is scheduled for our flexible curriculum week Mon 17 th Friday 21st July this is the preferred week to cause minimal disruption to learning BUT If a student finds a meaningful placement at another time then we will be flexible taking into consideration factors such as examinations

21 Finding a Work Experience Placement It is the responsibility of the student to source their own work experience placement (as is the case currently in Year 10) Students own work and initiative letters, s, phone calls, knocks on doors, Facebook!
