1 FIRE UP Coaching leads the field when it comes to Leadership Training, Accredited Coach Training and coaching individuals to reach their potential. As a Registered Training Organisation (22458) we offer qualifications based on our own uniquely developed coaching competencies. These were developed to align to both the Australian Qualifications Framework and the International Coach Federation core competencies for coaches. We can offer you the most comprehensive skill set to coach effectively in any context. We are also going to share with you our simple but powerful framework for coaching called REACH TM. We developed the coaching conversation model called REACH TM 5 years ago now and is has quickly replaced other models such as GROW, in the programs we run for our government and corporate clients. The REACH TM Model has been acclaimed by many of our clients as superior to any of the previous models they were using. It is sophisticated enough to allow conversations of depth in any context, and has particularly been embraced by our health, education and emergency services organisations. 2 Your Toolkit FIRE UP Coaching is a Registered Training Organisation specialising in providing accredited coach training program. This Toolkit gives you a sample selection of tools used by coaches to drive permanent behaviour change. These tools are used in coaching conversations; where the coach steps back from giving advice and instruction to allow the client to explore what is preventing them from making the necessary changes. This is an empowering process as the client realises that they can contribute to their own health and wellbeing. Enclosed are the following: The 4 Empowering Questions - help the client set goals that are meaningful to them. The State Shifter and the Reframing tool help shift the client from negative mindsets to more positive productive ones. FIRE UP Coaching's unique REACH TM Coaching Model contains the five essential elements required for a coaching conversation to give rise to the best possible results. The 4 Empowering Questions 1. What do you want...? Allows your client to set the agenda for coaching so the goal becomes directly relevant to them. (Versus trainer setting the goals based on what they think the client wants.) Make sure goal is expressed in the positive (people are excellent at telling us what they don t want) Ø Ø Ø Ø I want to increase my fitness so I can run on the beach with my partner and dog (Positive wording, vision and goal - very motivating to imagine and move towards) I want to lose 15kg (Negative wording around losing something) It takes practice and skill to coach someone around their goals, it takes time for the client to hone in on precisely what they want. Don t be afraid to explore this further and get specific! It might be worthwhile asking at the end... So... Is this what you really want? All of these tools are an extract from the FIRE UP Coaching programs

3 The 4 Empowering Questions 2. How might you get it? The 4 Empowering Questions 3. What is stopping you from having it now? When creating new healthy habits, neuroscience shows us that people need to go through the mental steps required to arrive at their own solutions to ensure new neural pathways are built leading to habitual change. You are empowering your client when you ask them to contribute to their own health outcomes,. It will also help you to understand your client rather than make the assumption: My client has no idea how to get healthy. You will be surprised what they do know when involved in the how to of health change. No matter how well your client describes their lifestyle, no one will understand their challenges like they do. It is virtually impossible for you uncover the deeply ingrained subconscious programs that cause people s bad health habits. This question is powerful and with some exploration around it, the client will be able to identify for themselves what is stopping them from making the health changes they desire. Once this roadblock is identified by the client, they are more likely to take ownership and responsibility of their own health.

4 The 4 Empowering Questions 4. What will it look/feel/sound/be like once you have achieved it? The State Shifter This tool is about snapping people out of negative, destructive and unproductive mindsets. When people return disappointed after perceived failures, we can easily help shift their state so they can be more constructive and resilient in the face of their progress. Helps client and trainer develop even more clarity as to exactly what the client wants. What s the best thing that happened to you since we last saw each other? Developing an end point that involves all the representational systems (visual/auditory/kinaesthetic) will positively anchor the client into their goal and give you cues to help return them to that positive state. For example: Client: I will look vibrant and glowing, my pants will feel loose and I will have lots of energy when I run down the beach with the waves crashing on the shore. Instantly dismisses any attention that may be spent on what they did not do and creates focus on what went well. Helps your client exist in a more positive state which significantly increases motivation etc Helps shift your own state when dealing with clients who are experiencing negativity and failure.

5 Re-framing Challenges for Self Efficacy The REACH Coaching Model TM As a coach it is essential we have tools to help clients re-frame challenges to ensure they remain in a positive mindset. When a client does not stick to their health change plan or reach certain targets it is human nature to begin focusing on what I did not do VS what I did do on their journey. Client: I didn t stick to the plan or reach my goal! Trainer: Okay, but tell me about something health related that you did do well this week? Client: I can t think of anything. I had a really busy week and had no time to be healthy. Trainer: Ok, well let s just suppose there was something that you did well this week, what would it be? Client: Umm, well I suppose I did order a salad with my lunches instead of chips and I also took the stairs to the next level up for our daily meetings. Trainer: Excellent, they sound like great healthy habits! Let s talk more about that! How did you feel when you made those healthy choices each day? This question requires the client to think more creatively using their imaginative mind to unleash ANYTHING they did that will prove, no matter how small, they are making progress towards health change. Attracts focus on the little decisions that amount to big changes and pushes client toward a more productive mindset. Detracts focus from failures to achievement and helps build self efficacy (belief in their ability to create change despite obstacles and barriers) Mindset shift from: I am failing and I can t TO I can, there are challenges along the way, but I am overcoming them Rapport An ability to build rapport is essential to get our coachee engaged and in the space of trusting and opening up. As health and fitness professionals we require greater flexibility when it comes to building and maintaining rapport. In a coaching conversation we focus on building rapport first and then ask questions to gain agreement on what the direction of the conversation will be. In the establishment of rapport, get clear on the outcome for the session. Set a clear Contract (Session Topic/Focus): If this session was able to be of the most value to you what would you like to discuss? What is important for you to achieve as a result of this conversation? What do you want to accomplish in this 30 (45, 60) minutes? Ensure that before you proceed in the conversation the outcome is clearly stated so that you and your client both understand what a successful conversation will result in. An example may be At the end of this discussion I will have a clear plan around what my weekly exercise program will be

6 The REACH Coaching Model TM The REACH Coaching Model TM Explore The majority of any coaching conversation will be questioning and exploring the issue at deeper and deeper levels. The quality of the questions will determine the quality of the answers you receive. There are many ways to delve deeper into a client s issues. The key is for the questions to be solution focused and outcome oriented. Outcome oriented questions are ones such as: What do you want? How will you get it? What would need to be different to get what you want? How will you know if you ve got it? What will a clear outcome look like? (or could be, feel like or what would you be saying when you achieved the outcome?) Just suppose you committed fully to getting the outcome, what would you have to do first? Solution-focused is a way of asking questions that focuses on: 1. Supporting people to explore their preferred futures 2. Exploring when, where, with whom and how pieces of that preferred future are already happening and will happen more.... Action A client will walk away from an effective coaching session clear on what the action steps they need to take are, and they will be stated as SSMART Goals. Stated in positive language (i.e. what you want, not what you don t want) Specific is easily understood and is so specific it only has one interpretation Measurable has a concrete measure that is tangible Achievable within the clients control to achieve Realistic is ecological (fits with client values and is balanced) Time Dated a date is set to achieve or review the action or outcome Establish the SSMART goal:. Clarify Whenever we coach others it is essential to clarify the value in achieving the outcome. A client will need to be questioned around the importance of achieving the goal. Questions of clarification may include: What is really important for you about achieving this goal / outcome? What is the value in achieving this? What will happen if you don t achieve this? How will your life be different having achieved?......

7 Honour The REACH Coaching Model TM The REACH Model finishes with Honour because it is so important that a client leaves a coaching conversation believing it is possible for them to achieve their goals. Take every opportunity to validate the other person. The power of unconditional positive regard for another person in extremely underrated. Establish the value of the session, then using their language validate them in a way that is authentic and ensures they leave the session feeling good about who they are. What was the value of this session for you? What are your wins from this session? This is going to be such a great achievement for you.. MINDSET COACHING What is coaching and why is the REACH Coaching Model unique? Some coaching models involve instruction and advising. The REACH Framework developed by FIRE UP is the preferred model of Queensland Health and is part of our International Coach Federation Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP).
