2 Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies Big Data and Digital Futures 02 Entry Part-time 2:i undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject Band B 1 year 2 years Increasingly, big data are used to track and trace social trends and behaviours. This course addresses how big data challenge traditional research processes, and impact on security, privacy, ethics, and governance and policy. You will learn practical and theoretical data skills, both in quantitative methods and the wider theoretical implications about how big data are transforming disciplinary boundaries. You ll take three core modules and a dissertation. Optional modules (see below) allow further specialisation. Lab work, report writing, data skills training and guest lectures by industry experts will form an integral part of your learning experience. You will be invited to attend short certified Masterclasses to further extend your methodological repertoire. An annual Spring Camp on a key theme (e.g. forecasting; visualisation) is also provided, allowing you to gain expertise in a wide range of cutting-edge quantitative methods. You don t need a computer science, mathematics or statistics background to apply. The focus is on conducting and understanding applied quantitative social science, so a willingness to engage with world social science issues is essential. 5 Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies Digital Media and Culture MA 05 Entry Part-time 2:i undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject Band B 1 year 2 years Digital processes are transforming culture, the economy and society. This course explores the origins and impact of these changes. It gives you the training to understand and make use of digital media critically, creatively and productively. If you re pursuing a professional career in knowledge-based industries, whether in museums, marketing agencies, businesses, charities, new-media production companies, public relations or think-tanks, this course is for you. It will equally qualify you with the academic skills for further doctoral study. You ll develop a critical and practice-based understanding of the impact of links, queries, downloads and uploads, file formats, archives, databases and networks more generally. Urban Informatics and Analytics is an emerging interdisciplinary approach to addressing the urban challenges arising from these developments. Our unique develops the practical skills needed - such as data analytics and visualisation techniques - to tackle these challenges, combining practice with cutting-edge theoretical and methodological understanding of urban systems. This and PhD-combined course bridges three key areas: Complexity Science; Systems Biology and Infectious Disease Epidemiology Research. 17 Statistics Statistics, PG Dip 17 Entry 2:i undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a related subject IELTS 6.5 (with 6.5 in all) 1 year Providing a thorough grounding in statistical theory and techniques, the course offers a launching pad for a professional career involving statistics, or a prelude to a research degree (PhD). You ll receive practical and theoretical training in two core courses (Statistical Methods and Introduction to Statistical Practice), which is then applied in six modules of your choice.
