Bachelor s programme The Bachelor s degree programme in Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences is a so-called broad Bachelor s programme taking three years of study. In the Bachelor s programme, you learn about the various fields within architecture and the built environment: architecture, urbanism, landscape architecture, building technology, real estate management, building management and public housing. In the third academic year, the minor allows students to widen or deepen their specialisation in their chosen way. Please note that the Bachelor s degree programme is in Dutch. VISUALISATION & FORM DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS TECHNOLOGY SOCIETY Subjects The curriculum of the degree programme is organised in six learning subjects (see Figure 1). Lying at the heart of the Bachelor s programme in Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences is architectural design [1], accompanied by and based on a thorough understanding of technology [2]. When designing, the architectural designer must have knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals and basic concepts of the discipline: Fundamentals [3]. The fourth learning subject, Society, Process and Practice, gives students an understanding ACADEMIC SKILLS Figure 1: bachelor s programme of the role played by architecture, architectural design and architects in our society. In addition to these four core learning subjects, there are two additional generic learning components: Academic Skills (which includes doing research, academic writing, reflection and suchlike) and Visualisation and Form (which includes communicating and visualising work on design and research). Who are we looking for? We are looking for students with with an interest in technology, society and the built environment, and with a work attitude that is both creative and analytical. Students who want to design a good, social and sustainable environment. You therefore have to be a bit of an idealist, but you also need to be practical! Making the world a better place is not something you can do on your own. Collaborating in teams, presenting your ideas orally, visually and in writing, and discussing these ideas critically: these are all Dr Remon Rooij, Bachelor s Programme Coordinator and Associate Professor in Spatial Planning & Strategy important skills that you need. And we are looking for students who are not afraid of hard work. Our Bachelor s students say that on average, they work intensively on their studies for hours a week. 3
Parts of the selection procedure The selection procedure comprises two parts: 1. VWO-5 report marks for the subjects Dutch, If you have a non-dutch certificate that is English, Mathematics B and Physics; equivalent to a VWO (pre-university education) 2. Online assignments on Academic motivation and Analysis of a Project. certificate, the committee will determine which subjects will count. In this case, you should send an to selectie-bk@tudelft.nl before VWO-5 report marks 15 January Attach the answer you receive In the selection procedure, we consider to this to your list of marks as proof. applicants VWO-5 report marks for the subjects In addition, candidates with an international Dutch, English, Mathematics B and Physics. We diploma should also register with TU Delft online ask you to send us these marks to an accuracy of to determine whether they can be admitted. See: one decimal place. The marks are then multiplied by a factor of 2.5, meaning that applicants can and-application/bsc-international/1-admission- score a maximum of 100 points for this part of requirements/ for all information concerning the selection procedure (4 x 10 x 2.5). The VWO-5 admission requirements and application marks comprise one quarter of the total score for procedure. the selection procedure (see page 6). If you lack the required marks, you should leave We expressly ask for your VWO-5 report (end- these spaces blank, and they will count as 0. of-year) marks, not the School Exams (SE) Moreover, do not forget that for your definitive marks or the testing and finalisation programme enrolment at TU Delft, you will need to satisfy (Programma van Toetsing en Afsluiting, PTA) all of the standard TU entry requirements (such marks. Even if you have already done your final as Physics and Mathematics, VWO Nature and exams and are taking a gap year, for example, Technology profile). we still ask for your VWO-5 marks, to keep the comparison between the candidates as fair as As proof, we ask you to send a copy of your list of possible. Candidates with a higher professional marks that has been certified by your secondary propedeutic (first-year) certificate should fill in school, as a PDF file. The list of marks must have the HAVO certificate marks for the subjects Dutch been certified with a signature and stamp from and English and the VWO certificate marks for your school. If the marks are not filled in correctly, Mathematics B and Physics. they will not count in the selection procedure. 4
Two online assignments We use two assignments to assess how you would fit into the Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences degree programme. The assignments are as follows: Assignment 1: motivation Write a letter of motivation of no more than 300 words, showing why the degree programme in Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences would be the right programme for you. In this, you should consider the different aspects of architecture and the built environment: architecture, urban planning, landscape management, technology, real estate management. You could illustrate your story with images from your own activities or work, for example, and explain why this is relevant and how it relates to the various aspects of design. Why is this important? We take it for granted that you want to study Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences and that you have found out all about the Bachelor s degree programme and what it entails. You will have attended open days, spent a day shadowing an Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences student and/or participated in online trial studying, read the online or paper brochures and looked at the website. You will therefore know what we consider to be important when designing buildings and environments. In addition to this, you might already have done things that are related to this programme, at school or beyond. You could also refer to extra subjects, courses, extracurricular activities or a gap year in your statement of motivation. Your statement should make it clear that you have the potential to become a good and academic designer and/or that you know what is required for this. Assignment 2: Analysis of a Project After 15 January 2018, we will make ten architectural projects and ten urban planning/ landscape architecture projects available online. From these examples, you should choose one architectural project and one urban/landscape project, which you then analyse. Collect images and/or maps for the projects you have chosen. In fact, you will also be able to visit some of the examples yourself! What do you consider to be important elements of these projects? What strikes you about the design, the lay-out, the constructions, etc.? Summarise your ideas in a drawing or a set of drawings, thereby creating your own visual abstractions of the two projects. Put this drawing or these drawings on one sheet of A4 (portrait format). Then upload these two sheets of A4 with your drawing(s) i.e., one sheet of A4 per project in PDF format (max. 1 MB). Don t forget to include the name of the project and the titles, a key, and an arrow indicating north for the separate drawings (if applicable) on the sheet of A4. Ensure that your work is easily readable. It is better to have fewer clear drawings than lots of unreadable drawings. The visual abstractions could include a (schematic) representation of: the main spatial structure of the project; the most important spatial parts of the project; the connections between the spatial elements of the project; the relationships between the project and its surroundings; a crucial detail of the project. For each of the examples you have chosen, state what you consider to be interesting/good/ beautiful about the project and describe this in your own words (2 aspects per project, no more than 50 words per aspect). For each project, make two suggestions (no more than 50 words per suggestion) as to what you would like/be able to improve about the project, and explain why. TIP: when doing the assignments, keep the descriptions and diagram on page 3 in mind. 5
Assessment criteria The submitted assignments will be assessed anonymously by different design lecturers, independently of one other. Each design lecturer will assess just one assignment per candidate, and every assignment will be assessed by two different design lecturers. This means that for their assignments, every candidate will be assessed by a total of four different lecturers, independently of one other. The total score will consist of the sum of the scores of the two parts, with a maximum of 100 points (1/4) for the VWO- 5 marks and a maximum of 300 points (3/4) for the two assignments. The assessment criteria for assessing the assignments are: Assignment 1: Academic motivation (50 points x 2 assessors = 100 points) Criterion 1 (0, 5, 10, 15 or 20 points) Criterion 2 (0, 5, 10 or 15 points) Criterion 3 (0, 5, 10 or 15 points) Understanding and interpretation of the discipline of Architecture, Urbanism & Building Sciences Motivation (content, relevance, enthusiasm) Quality of argumentation style and formulation Assignment 2: Analysis of projects (50 points x 2 assessors = 100 points) Architecture project Part 1: visuals (0, 5, 10, 15 or 20 points) Part 2: positive aspects (0, 3, 6 or 10 points) Part 3: proposals for improvement (0, 3, 6 or 10 points) Part 4: quality of argumentation style and formulation (0, 3, 6 or 10 points) Urban/landscape project Part 1: visuals (0, 5, 10, 15 or 20 points) Part 2: positive aspects (0, 3, 6 or 10 points) Part 3: proposals for improvement (0, 3, 6 or 10 points) Part 4: quality of argumentation style and formulation (0, 3, 6 or 10 points) Uiteindelijke score Part Distribution of points Max. no. of points VWO-5 marks 2.5 x mark total 100 Online assignment 1 2 assessors x Online assignment 2: architecture 2 assessors x urban/landscape 2 assessors x Total 400 6
Determining the order of ranking Based on the individual scores, an order of ranking will be determined, from 1 to the number corresponding with the number of candidates. The candidate with the most points will be given the lowest ranking and the candidate with the fewest points will be given the highest ranking. If two candidates have the same score, the score for the VWO-5 end-of-year marks will be used to determine the order of ranking. The list will be passed on to Studielink, which will inform candidates of their ranking number in mid-april You should therefore check your regularly as from April (including your spam folder) to see whether you have received a message from Studielink, or log onto the Studielink website. You should also do this while on holiday! What if you are one of the first 400 candidates? If your ranking number falls within the capacity (numbers 1-400), you will receive a placement certificate from Studielink for the degree programme in Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences. You then have two weeks to accept this placement certificate; after this, your placement certificate will expire. If you fail to accept your placement certificate within these two weeks, you will not be able to study Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences in the academic year After this, you still need to meet the admission requirements and complete your enrolment. Students are only officially enrolled when they have met the admission requirements and the digital authorisation for the payment of tuition fees has been processed. For more information, see the TU Delft website ( What if you are not among the first 400 candidates? If your ranking number is higher than 400, you will remain on the list of candidates for the degree programme in Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences. If candidates do not accept their placement certificate or fail to meet the enrolment conditions (because they do not have a diploma, for example), then new candidates will be admitted from number 401 upwards. Experience shows that a number of candidates from the first 400 drop out. Therefore, it is likely that candidates ranked higher than 400 can still be admitted. As students can take part in selection procedures for two limited enrolment programmes this year, there is a high chance that a number of candidates from the first 400 will drop out. Some candidates also drop out at the beginning of July, because they have failed to obtain a VWO certificate. Placement certificates will be distributed until 15 August 2018 so be sure to keep a close eye on your ! What if I don t succeed this year? If you do not succeed in being selected for the degree programme in Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences this year, or if you do not pass your final exams, you can try to participate in the selection procedure again next year. You can make a total of three selection attempts. For this, check your participation record in Studielink. If you fail your exams, you can ask the degree programme to cancel your participation in the selection procedure this year, so that you do not use up a selection attempt. No later than 1 October 2018, the Bachelor s degree programme in Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences will announce whether it will be using a selection procedure again for the academic year, and what the selection procedure will be.
