2 BFCCPS Classical Enrichment Block Course Catalog Grades 6-8 The Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School is pleased to announce the Classical Enrichment Block Grade 6-8 Course Offerings! Classes are offered by BFCCPS faculty and staff members as well as Artists in Residence contracted by BFCCPS. Course Descriptions: The classes are divided by trimester and cover a multitude of topics across all content areas. Classes are offered at BFCCPS and the Franklin School for the Performing Arts, 38 Main St. Franklin, MA. A class description, teacher, and other information is listed for each class. Registration Information: Parents please review the class offering and discuss them with your child. Registrations are offered on a 1st Choice-2nd Choice-3rd Choice method. We make every attempt to give every student their first choice. If the 1st Choice cannot be given we use grade seniority to fill the class and go the student 2nd and 3rd choices. Our goal is to maintain class sizes of no more than 15 students. Some courses will be offered more than one time in a school year. Please Note: Students may not take a particular course more than 3 times in a three year period. This is to allow students to get a broader experience of the courses offered in all of the content areas. Student changes in enrichment block classes can only be made with permission of parent and Mr. Benjamin GRADE 6 STUDENTS: All Grade 6 Students will be assigned to Mrs. Ward s and Mr. Word s Research Class during Trimester One. Grade 6 students DO NOT need to choose an elective for Trimester 1. Please check off "Grade 6 Required Class" as your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices for Trimester 1. Grade 6 Students please choose an elective for trimesters Two and Three! PLEASE NOTE: Students who are failing an academic class may be placed automatically into the Academic Support Class and not their elective class for that trimester Please fill out the online electronic registration form on our website at Please be sure to choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice for each trimester. Electronic Registration is scheduled for June 8-15 and must be complete by Monday, June 15, 2015 Classes will be canceled or changed if needed and Parents will be notified.

4 TRIMESTER 1 OFFERINGS Academic Support Student Services Staff Academic Support is designed to bridge the gap between a student s academic potential and their academic performance in order to successfully meet school expectations. Academic Support is also designed to assist students in refining and strengthening their academic skills with a focus on literacy and content skills, math, organization or study skills and strategies. Students may elect or be required to take this class if they are missing a significant amount of assignments or a teacher feels that the additional support is necessary to prevent course failure and eliminate the need for summer school remediation. Help students understand their learning styles and advocate for their learning needs. Assist students in completing all missing assignments. Help students gain confidence and knowledge in a specific subject area Students should come to class with all necessary materials needed to complete assignments. Design and Sewing Mrs. Flaherty The course would consist of 5 topics covered in discussions as well as exploring fabrics, books, magazines and various tools used in sewing studios (patterns, dress forms, a sewing machine etc) In addition, there will be 3 hands on projects that the students could work on through out the semester. Gain a foundation of design principles and sewing techniques Class participation and project work Dance Casey Harkness Andrade/Kellie Stamp Note: This Class is being offered in partnership with The Franklin School for the Performing Arts, 38 Main St. Franklin, MA. This course will be taught at their facility and not at BFCCPS. Students will be escorted to and from class by BFCCPS Faculty/Staff. A beginner/intermediate dance class that introduces basic dance vocabulary, technique and combinations. Every class includes a warm-up consisting of conditioning and stretching, as well as beginner jazz technique. Students learn simple skills and moves across the floor. Each class spends time working on a dance combination that will be showcased at the end of the term. Students should remember and understand basic jazz dance vocabulary. Students should have a general understanding of jazz dance. Students should be able to demonstrate skills and combinations that support their newly gained knowledge. No previous dance experience is necessary. Comfortable clothes that allow for movement. The first half of the class will be the discussion/demonstrations and the second half of the class will be hands on time for them to work on their individual projects.

5 Film Appreciation Mr. Bret Herholz Students will watch a wide variety of films from several different genres ranging from drama, comedy, mystery and horror which they will be required to write a full review of each of the film. Goals/Objectives of the course: Students gain an appreciation of films as an art form Answer thoughtfully and critically why they like or dislike a film. Gain insight into the technical side of why one film works and another doesn t. Differentiate between a film being badly made and a film they just didn t like on personal preference. Course Students are required to arrive promptly at the beginning of class Take notes during the film and to be attentive and respectful. A full page review will be due on each film unless stated otherwise. Films for Future Scientists-Ms. Herliczek Films for Future Scientists will explore scientific films and documentaries with follow-up debates and discussions. Films and documentaries to include the Planet Earth series, a TED talk, Jurassic Park, An Inconvenient Truth, and other short documentaries that feature specific organisms, inventions, and scientists. Goals/Objectives of the course: a.) I can use important information from a film or documentary to reach an opinion about a specific topic or world problem. b.) I can deduce factual information from opinion-based information in a film or documentary. c.) I can clearly convey my ideas to my peers. d.) I can compare and contrast information from specific films. e.) I can outline the pros and cons of inventions and advances in technology. f.) I can write a movie review for a scientific film. Students will participate and learn several different activities that promote lifetime fitness and recreation. Students will enjoy activity while improving on their own personal fitness level. This course will be taught at their facility and not at BFCCPS. Students will be escorted to and from class by BFCCPS Faculty/Staff. Introduction to French Melodie, musical theater and opera Students will be introduced French song beginning with French folk songs and continuing through classical French Melodie, French opera and French musical theater. They will explore brief histories of each genre; be introduced to the International Phonetic Alphabet crucial to singers; and they will incorporate basic singing technique into the learning of each song/aria/melodie. Introductory French

6 Geometry Math Teacher (Note:Two Trimesters Required) Description: This is a High School Geometry class. Pre-Requisites for this class are to be enrolled in the Algebra 1 Advanced class AND have completed the Geometry class during the summer or earned an 80% or higher on a cumulative test covering chapters 1-6 in the text. To complete the Holt Geometry Text To cover all of the standards for Geometry as outlined in the Massachusetts Frameworks/Common Core Curriculum To prepare students to enter high school to take Algebra 2 Students should come prepared to class. This includes a graph paper notebook, pencils, and completed assignments. Resources: Holt Geometry 2007 text, Gizmo Simulation Labs History and Preparation of Food-Mr. Callahan and Mr. Olson This class will consist of classroom and hands on application of the preparation and history of food. Students will learn the application of following a recipe as well as the economics of buying, preparing and selling at restaurants of food. The history aspect will follow the development of food as a religious practice and the importance of being able to sustain civilizations and society. The class will also investigate how food has become a social and entertaining part of modern society. Historical context of food and the relationship with society Experience a working kitchen in the food industry Students will need notebooks and pencils, as well as a desire to learn about food Students will also need a permission slip to travel on a field trip Improvisation and Auditioning Techniques Ms. Susie Cristiano This session will focus on developing confidence and skill in Improvisation and Auditioning. Students will learn and practice various Improvisation skills, use of scripts (memorization techniques and cold-reading skills), develop scene snippets, learn to use props, theater games, work on developing characters and develop your audition monologue. Speech training and movement skills will also be worked on to prepare for the auditions for the BFCCPS Musical. This class IS NOT just for people interested in performing in the musical it is for ALL students of ALL skill levels and will be fast-paced and FUN!! This isn t a regular type of acting class where you sit and wait we are on our feet acting together all the time. Goal: This class is designed to develop Public Speaking and Performance skills. Examine the process of preparing foods Break down the economic aspect of food management Hands on application of recipe and preparedness of food

7 Let s Research! Mrs. Word and Mrs. Marjorie Ward NOTE: THIS CLASS IS A REQUIREMENT FOR ALL 6 TH GRADE STUDENTS TO TAKE IN TERM ONE (6 TH GRADERS, PLEASE CHOOSE AN ELECTIVE FOR TERMS 2 AND 3) In trimester 1 all sixth graders will take the class "Let's Research!" during enrichment block. During this required class, students will learn the important aspects of research including: developing a research topic and guiding questions; determining proper resources, both print and digital; avoiding plagiarism; and correctly formatting a written paper and bibliography. The class will culminate with the start of the Social Studies Fair research project. Objectives: Designing a research report with focused objectives. Gathering relevant information from multiple print and digital sources. Avoiding plagiarism by proper use of MLA formatting. This is a required, trimester 1 course for all sixth graders. Marketing Agency/Graphic Design Mrs. Dionne Katinas Do you dream about having your own business one day? Are you creative or like coming up with ideas? In this class, you will learn the elements of effective design to market your business. This class will form teams to build a marketing agency. We will discuss and analyze designs from existing companies. Your assignments will teach you about typography and color theory. Some of the assignments will be creating a logo, advertisement, web banner and more. You will learn the process of concepts to producing completed designs. We will use chromebooks to assist us in producing some of the assignments. 1. Learn how to design effective pieces for marketing a product or business. 2. Learn the fundamentals of design and vocabulary terms. 3. Develop skills on understanding successful logos and advertisements. 4. Explore the use of color through learning color theory. 5. Explore the use of typography and how fonts express a style. Creativity and a desire to learn how to market your business. Some computer knowledge is helpful. Mixed Media Drawing and Painting Lab Art Teacher Drawing can be fun and scary. This class is design to help students become more comfortable with drawing. Students will explore traditional and creative drawing exercises along with mixed-media materials to design their own original works of art. Students will believe that drawing can be an enjoyable experience. Student will discover which skills influence the foundations of drawing. Students will explore a variety of drawing styles, methods, and materials. Have an interest in learning different drawing techniques and working with mixed-media materials.

8 Poi Spinning Mr. Chris Heater. Description: Poi is a form of dance, where weights on the ends of tethers are swung through rhythmical patterns. It is rooted in the culture of the Maori people of New Zealand, who dance with poi in traditional ceremonies. Poi was popularized throughout the world largely by fire spinning, which spawned when traditional poi met modern day dance parties. In time, poi enthusiasts turned to flag poi, LED poi, and other tools that express the beauty of poi without the health and environmental risks of fire. Take a look at the following video to get an idea of what poi spinning is really about: N8 Student will learn the basics of poi spinning, including making their own poi. Two pair of socks, one long and one short, or $12 to purchase a fabric poi set. Class participation Video Storytelling Mr. Richard Stemple Description: Students will learn ways to use, set up, and take down various forms of A/V equipment, such as lights, microphones, cables, and stands, as well as how to use different techniques on the ipad to create stories. They will have to use problemsolving skills to figure out why equipment is working or not working and how to make adjustments once it is working. Once they have begun to master these skills they will use these skills to post on the BFCCPS web site. Participate in approved blogs, apps. and websites. Participate in assigned assemblies in approved blogs, apps. and websites. Resources: We will be using BFCCPS ipads as well as the library and the auditorium Vocal Technique Ms. Ruth Monty Students will practice sight singing, and study vowel and consonant formation as they discuss placement and intonation. They will learn songs in a variety of musical styles as they sing in unison and harmony. Basic Choreography and concert etiquette will be integrated to build performance skills. Students will build vocal skills and confidence in part singing to learn how to present selections for Informal and Formal Auditions and Performances Improve Intonation skills with vowel and consonant formation, including Foreign Languages. Develop Sight Singing skills with Octavo Reading in 2 or 3 parts.. Students will sight read and perform selected choral selections in Unison and Harmony. Build confidence and expand knowledge of the ipad and equipment to create an original story. Learn to use problem-solving skills to solve various hardware and software problems

Character Design and Layout for Animation Mr. Bret Herholz Students will learn the building blocks for creating classic animation. Students will work from designing characters to creating storyboards and coming up with their own ideas for an animated series as well as working with a few established ideas. Goals/Objectives of the course: To gain a better appreciation and insight into what it takes to create an animated series and learn a little bit of a history of the art form. Course Students are required to arrive promptly to class. They are required to complete both the class room assignments and any homework that is assigned. Computer Game Development-Mr. Richard Stemple (Learning to use basic computer game software and web tools to create video games) Description: Students will learn ways to create, use, and set up, different computer games using various web tools and software. They will have to use problem-solving skills to figure out why games are working or not working and how to make adjustments once it is working. They will also have to develop and learn various strategies and goals to create a good game. Once they have begun to master these skills they will use these skills in games that they create. Build confidence and expand knowledge of Technology and strategy Learn to use problem-solving skills to solve various software and hardware problems Basic computer skills and confidence. Have you ever thought about how they came up with their image? We will look at marketing pieces that bands have established to visually express their music and style. In this class, you will learn basic design elements to create your own band's image. The assignments will teach you about composition, typography and color theory. Your assignments will be to create a logo, CD case, poster, itunes image, and more. 1. Learn how to design effective pieces to brand an image. 2. Learn about typography and styles 3. Resources: Holt Geometry 2007 text, Gizmo Simulation Labs Jazz Ensemble Mr. Chris Heater Description: Students will study the playing techniques, history, and various styles of jazz music. This is a performance based course open to students who have at least two years of experience playing on one of the following instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Guitar, Bass, Piano, or Percussion. Students will demonstrate, through performance, a variety of jazz techniques, including improvisation. Students will combine their individual parts to create a sense of ensemble playing. Students will perform one or two jazz selections in the winter band concert. Creativity and a desire to explore developing an image for a music band or singer. Geometry Math Teacher

11 Musical: Behind the Scenes Art Teacher In this class the students will work together to design and construct set pieces and props for the school musical. They will also learn about character creation through costuming, mask making, and makeup. Students will have the chance to explore a variety of tools and materials using 2-D and 3-D design elements. Students will read and discuss the musical script. Students will learn about set design, props, and character creation. Students will gain perspective on how a production design team collaborates with the theatre director to communicate the visual environment for a theatrical show. Students should have an interest in learning about set design. They should enjoy working together on group projects and be interested in working with a variety of art materials. The Criminal Justice System Ms. Kelly-Hollis Grade 7 &8 students only Can t get enough of Law & Order? Learn all about the criminal justice system in this Enrichment Block class. We will discuss the different types of crimes, arrest and booking procedures, steps in a criminal trial, and the roles of trial participants. In the second half of the course we will hold a mock criminal trial. Students will be assigned identities and jobs in the courtroom. The outcome of the case depends on a variety of variables (witnesses called, evidence used, judge s rulings, jury composition). Students will discuss the different types of crimes, arrest and booking procedures Learn steps in a criminal trial, and the roles of trial participants Willingness to read, write, and perform in mock trial. Vocal Ensemble Techniques Rise and Shine Ms. Ruth Monty The Class will build Vocal Techniques for to use in Public Speaking, Solos, Duets, and Ensemble Singing. Students build vocal skills and confidence in part singing, to present selections for Informal and formal performances and auditions. Students will build vocal skills and confidence for Public Speaking, and Vocal Ensembles. 2. Students will learn how to present selections for Informal and Formal Auditions Students will need a notebook with pockets to hold class materials.

Class preparation Art Explorers-Mrs. Katinas & Art Teacher Explore the traditions and designs found in the art and artifacts from other cultures around the world. Understand some aspects of different cultures while creating your art. In this class students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of media. You will receive a base foundation in visual arts through instruction in drawing, painting techniques, and three-dimensional art. 1. Gain a foundation of design principles and techniques. 2. Look at different cultures and the art they specialize in 3. Create 2-D and 3-D assignments 4. Discuss artists and their work 5. Express self through art Having fun exploring the different parts of the world, while using art materials and your own creativity. Comic Art Mr. Bret Herholz Students will get a chance to draw all things comics, including comic book and comic strip style artwork. Goals/Objectives of the course: Students will gain a better understanding and appreciation of the art form for its combination of art and storytelling. Course Students are required to promptly arrive at class and complete all class and homework assignments to the best of their ability. I ask for them to put their best effort into everything they do. Conversational Spanish Mr. Richard Stemple Text: Students will be setting up computer accounts with Queonda, Duolingo, and others. No text necessary. Description: Students will learn basic Spanish for conversation through the use of different computer games including using various web tools and software. They will have to use problem-solving skills to figure out various vocabulary and sentences. Students will develop

13 a blog to speak and communicate with students in Spanish speaking countries. This class will end with a fun trip to Acapulco's restaurant, where we will put our Spanish to the test by ordering and speaking at an authentic Mexican meal. Ole! Build confidence and expand knowledge of the Spanish language. A willingness to try something new while having a little fun. Students will learn flag techniques such as spins, tosses, and one-handed manipulation. Students will perform basic and intermediate flag routines while moving. -Students will perform in the Memorial Day Parade as part of the BFCCPS Marching Band Students will be provided a flag and flag pole with which to practice at home. Students must

15 bring his/her flag to school for class and must wear sneakers or other closed-toe comfortable shoe. Students will need to purchase a uniformed t-shirt from the school for the Memorial Day Parade.. Show Choir Techniques Ms. Ruth Monty Description: Students sing and perform selected repertoire with original choreography. Students will study how musical style affects voice techniques, using songs from a variety of Broadway Musicals. The use of harmony, with basic and advanced Dance Choreography will be integrated into all vocal selections. Audition procedures and the importance of concert etiquette will be stressed. Sing in Unison and Harmony using a variety of musical styles Adapt vocal technique to different styles of music Sing with specified choreography Practice Audition Procedures Students practice and perform selected repertoire for use in auditions and performances in the school, and the community. The Criminal Justice System Ms. Kelly-Hollis Grade 7 &8 students only Can t get enough of Law & Order? Learn all about the criminal justice system in this Enrichment Block class. We will discuss the different types of crimes, arrest and booking procedures, steps in a criminal trial, and the roles of trial participants. In the second half of the course we will hold a mock criminal trial. Students will be assigned identities and jobs in the courtroom. The outcome of the case depends on a variety of variables (witnesses called, evidence used, judge s rulings, jury composition). Students will discuss the different types of crimes, arrest and booking procedures Learn steps in a criminal trial, and the roles of trial participants Willingness to read, write, and perform in mock trial. Writing and Directing Workshop Ms. Susie Cristiano Students will develop their own scene from idea to production. Focus will be on writing a clear/ concise script, develop characterization and directing each other. The session will end with performances for the school, families and friends. This class will be taught in 2 parts. Half of the class time will be spent continuing to develop our skills. In the second half of class we will focus on creating our own scenes and/or short plays.
