The Model Approach One of the strategies to solve problems in topics such as Whole numbers and Fractions. Provides a visual tool that enables students to determine what operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division) to use to solve the problem.
Supporting your child at home Encourage your child to read the problem a few times so that they could understand what the problem is about. Focus on the problem-solving process. Motivate your child to take pride in their work. Praise your child for the effort in his/her work.

PSLE Matters (T-Score and Sec 1 Posting)
PSLE - a placement exam Enables posting to secondary schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice Places students into different courses according to their academic ability Need to reflect the relative achievement level of students among their peers
PSLE GRADES (STANDARD SUBJECTS) Grade Mark Range Descriptors A* 91 Has very good understanding of the subject A Has good understanding of the subject B C Has adequate understanding of the subject D Has fair understanding of the subject E Has elementary understanding of the subject U < 20 Has not met the requirement for the minimum grade
PSLE GRADES (FOUNDATION SUBJECTS) Grade Mark Range Descriptors G1 85 Is very good in the subject at the foundation level G Is good in the subject at the foundation level G Has an adequate grasp of the subject at the foundation level G Has an elementary grasp of the subject at the foundation level U < 30 Has not met the requirement at the foundation level for the minimum grade
Can raw scores be used? NO!
Why Not? Different subjects have different levels of difficulty So is the spread of marks from the average mark, i.e. the standard deviation (spread = standard deviation)
H U R R A Y! Susan I scored 85% in both English and Chinese Language!
Susan scores 85% in both EL and CL Her performance in CL is very close to that of other students 85% She did much better in EL as compared to other students EL CL 0 EL ave CL ave 100 = 60 = 80
The raw score obtained in the exam only shows how good the pupil is in that subject, not how good he is as compared to others So there is a need for standardisation of the raw scores Transformed Score or T-Score
What is T Score? It gives the relative position of a pupil s performance as compared to the performance of all the other students in that subject
EL T-Score MT 85% 85% ave = 60 ave = T-Score converts average mark of each subject to a common score of 50 points. It also converts other marks taking into consideration the extent to which they differ from the average and the size of spread of the marks around the average
How is T Score calculated for each subject? (X - Y) T = Z where X: pupil s mark for the subject Y: average mark (mean) scored by all students Z: spread of marks around the average mark (standard deviation)
What is PSLE Aggregate Score? Aggregate Score is the total of T-Score for all 4 subjects
For example : Subject Total Mark T-Score EL CL Maths Science Aggregate Score: 185
SECONDARY ONE POSTING Posting By Merit : Rank all students by their PSLE Aggregate Scores and below
