1 1 Assessment Requirements: November 2017 Grade 5 Your son starts his exams on 15 November 2017 Please ensure that he has the following at school EVERY DAY during the assessment week: A complete pencil case including: 2 blue pens, grey pencil, sharpener, coloured pencil crayons, glue stick, ruler and a pair of scissors. Bottle of water plain not flavoured. The books and or study notes for the exams he is writing that day and the next day. The special requirements for each specific exam see the study list for details. Sports kit may be worn to school on the day that the boys have sport during their second session. Folio paper will be provided for the exam sessions. English: Language and Comprehension: (15 November) English Handbook and Study Guide Beryl Luterin and Marcelle Pincus } 1. Comprehension Skills : Boys will need to be able to: Read and understand supplied source material. Read the instructions and questions carefully and understand what is expected. Answer questions in full sentences, using the passage to find relevant information, punctuation and spelling. Use the skills of sequencing, reading for facts, inferential reasoning, context skills and literal interpretation. 2. : The boys should: Have a working knowledge of the following parts of speech. They must be able to identify them and apply them in the given tasks. Punctuation, nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions and prepositions. Be able to write a well constructed sentence or paragraph while using the relevant parts of speech.

3 3 Paper 2 Stelwerk en Kreatief (22 November) : SuperBoetie - Study questions and answers as well as the summary up to and including chapter 6. Apply knowledge of prescribed book and answer questions meaningfully. Think creatively in order to design and create a poster. Zulu Paper 1 : (16 November) Language and Comprehension : 1. Umuqondofana/ Synonym. 2. Umuqondophikisa/ Antonym. 3. Isihlanganiso/ Conjuctions. 4. Proverbs. 5. Comprehension passage. Skills The boys need to practice all their Zulu vocabulary and learn the given language skills. They will be required to use these skills in the given tasks that have been set. The boys must be able to read and understand a reading passage for the comprehension in order to answer the questions. The passage will be one of the seen passages that the boys have worked with during the term. Paper 2: (22 November) 1. Creative writing. Washo ke gogo (A reading book) Lion Story Elephant Story Using the stories that the boys have read, they will be asked to write a dialogue. 2. 4 4 Boys need to be able to answer questions about the above chapters from their reader. Mathematics What you need to learn for exams: Please note that questions might be asked in varying ways and will be incorporated into critical thinking questions. The content, however, will remain the same. It is advisable for the boys to learn the coloured information sheets in their workbooks Paper 1: ( 16 November) Number Operations and Relationships - Whole numbers: Counting, ordering, comparing, representing (writing), rounding off and place/number value of digits, (Sign Operations: the 4 processes- addition, subtraction, multiplication and division); Common Fractions, Decimal Fractions To be able to write 5 digit numbers in words and numbers. To be able to round off numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 To be able to arrange numbers in descending and ascending order To be able to identify the place value, as well as the number value of a digit To be able to add and subtract 5 digit whole numbers To be able to multiply and divide whole numbers by 1 digit ( short division) To be able to multiply and divide whole numbers by 2 digits (long multiplication and long division) To compare whole numbers, as well as common fractions (bigger than, smaller than or equal to) To convert improper fractions into mixed numbers (and mixed numbers into improper fractions) To simplify a common fraction (into its simplest form) To be able to add and subtract common fractions with like denominators To be able to add and subtract common fractions with unlike denominators To convert common fractions, with a denominator of 10/100/1000, into decimals fractions (and convert decimal fractions into common fractions, with a denominator of 10/100/1000) Patterns Functions and Algebra - Numeric To be able to identify a number pattern (the rule) To be able to complete (add to) a pattern, using the correct rule
5 5 Measurement : Temperature, Mass, Perimeter, Area and Volume, Reading the temperature off a thermometer Identifying units of temperature Reading a mass from a scale Identifying units of mass Converting grams into kilograms Converting kilograms into grams Adding and subtracting units of mass Multiplying and dividing units of mass To be able to work out the distance around a shape (perimeter) To be to work out the amount of space that a shape covers (area) To be able to measure the amount of space a shape occupies (volume) Space and Shape - Position and Movement To locate a position, alpha-numeric grid references can be used To be able to read a grid To be able to identify a position on a grid To write out a position located Problem Solving The boys are expected to be able to apply all the content and skills, from the above, to solve the problem presented to them. Paper 2: (20 November) Space and Shape - Properties of 2D and 3D shapes The ability to identify 2D and 3D shapes and their properties Space and Shape -Viewing Objects Identifying which angle an object is viewed from Drawing the object from a certain view
6 6 Space and Shape - Symmetry Identifying lines of symmetry Drawing lines of symmetry Drawing the symmetrical side to a figure Space and Shape -Transformations Skills : Identifying the movement of a shape (translate, rotate or reflect) Transforming a shape by either: translating it, rotating it, or reflecting it Data Handling - collection, analysing, probability Skills : Reading a variety of graphs (pictograph, bar graph, column graph) or tables (tally table) Interpreting data collected from a variety of graphs (pictograph, bar graph, column graph) or tables (tally/frequency table) Drawing or completing a variety of graphs (pictograph, bar graph, column graph) or tables (tally/frequency table) To identify the extent to which an event is likely to occur- the possibility or chance that something can happen Patterns Functions and Algebra - Geometric Patterns To be able to identify a geometric pattern (the rule) To be able to complete (add to) a pattern, using the correct rubrics Problem Solving The boys are expected to be able to apply all the content and skills, from the above, to solve the problem presented to them. History: (17 November) knowledge - Egypt. All information that has been covered in class. Sources for study are available in the boy s notebooks and Platinum Social Sciences. The boys will be required to read / study the given sources (written and visual) and extract the information that is needed to complete the tasks that have been set. Some sources will be unseen.
7 7 Using their chronological skills the boys will arrange items or dates according to the information supplied in the source material. The boys will be required to use their skills of similarity and difference when comparing information that is supplied in the source material with information that has been studied. The boys will be required to supply the cause or effect of a situation based on the information that is found in the source material or studied in preparation for the exam. The boys must be able to differentiate between fact and opinion. This is vital when studying History. Geography : (15 November) : Weather Climate Natural Vegetation Platinum Social Sciences: Pg 44-69; (maps need not be learnt, know how to find different information on a map) The boys need to be able to: collect and use data from graphs and unseen maps. Maps will be given as a source and need not be learned off-by-heart. draw bar graphs using given data, boys must know the important information needed on a bar graph, bar graphs will be marked according to a rubric. tabulate information, boys need to be able to take information from a source and draw a table to display the given information. use various unseen sources such as pictures to answer questions and write paragraphs about the various topics that have been covered in Gr 5 Geography this term. Science (21 November) : Metals o Properties o Heat Conduction o Magnetism o Rusting Non-metals
8 8 o Properties Uses of metals and non-metals Fuels including Fossil Fuels Fossils Understand the methods in scientific inquiry and how they are used in basic problem solving Aim, hypothesis, method, results, discussion and conclusion Experimental design including controls and experimental error. Understand the processes involved in scientific data collection Common units of measurement Organisation and presentation of data Basic error analysis (accuracy, precision, human error, fair test etc) Learners should have a grasp of scientific, technological and environmental knowledge and be able to apply it in new contexts. Learners should understand the uses of Natural Sciences in society and the environment. Thinking Skills and Maps 4 thinking maps- Bubble Map, Circle Map, Brace Map and Tree Map. These maps have been used in various subjects during class time. The boys will be asked to use these maps in various subjects. eg - History - Read the given source material and create a circle map showing the value of the Nile River to the Egyptians. The boys will be asked to use these maps if it applies to the subject that they are working with. The teachers will include the map if it is pertinent to the subject or the test. Critical Thinking (23 November) No study is required for Critical Thinking paper. Work will be based on concepts covered during class time.
