The national curriculum expects the average students at this age and at this stage of their education to be working at least Grade 4 and at most Grade 8 in GCSE Mathematics. We have a mixed ability class and while students in this school generally exceed the national average, there is inevitably going to be some students who find maths challenging and who will not be working at this level. All summative assessments will be at least Grade 4 but there will be differentiation for those pupils who are at either end of the ability spectrum. Assessment 1 will comprise of the homework given to students in Autumn Term. The purpose of this is to encourage a culture of home/independent learning and pressure students to take homework seriously. Assessment 2 will be an exam based assessment looking at pupils understanding of Basic Number, Linear Graphs, Fractions, Ratio and Proportion, Algebraic Manipulation. Assessment 3 will also be a test on topics relating to Angles, Statistical Diagrams and Averages, Sampling and more Complex Diagrams, Constructions and Loci. Assessment 4 will be an end of term exam which will be made of everything we have learned in Autumn Term. This will be an extensive exam which will require sufficient revision and preparation. This will be a good opportunity to assess how much knowledge the students have retained from this term. How can I help my child in this subject? Students will benefit from having a designated quiet space in which they can study. They will need their scientific calculators and geometry sets for some of the topics. They should make a habit of practicing exam questions at home. Please also encourage your child to always check their homework before handing it in as this well help them to self-correct and is a vital element in their own self-assessment. All the diagrams including construction work as well as graphs should be done with pencil only. Any missed homework will be flagged up through their exercise books or s, so please check them. Who do I contact if I have concerns about my child s progress in this subject? 3 of 18

They would be introduced to enzymes and will study what they are and how they work. They will deepen their understanding by looking at the lock and key model and investigating factors that affect enzyme activity as well as the role of enzymes in our digestive system, at home and in industry. 2 nd Half Term: Organising animals and plants By end of this unit students will be able to recognise the different types of blood cells in a photograph or diagram, and explain how they are adapted to their functions. 7 Chemistry Term:Autumn Year: 10 Teacher: Mr Enamul Hassan 1 st Half Term: By the end of this unit students will be able to calculate the mean rate of a reaction from given information about the quantity of a reactant used or the quantity of a product formed and the time taken. They will be able to predict and explain using collision theory the effects of changing conditions of concentration, pressure and temperature on the rate of a reaction. Student will learn that in some chemical reactions, the products of the reaction can react to produce the original reactants and equilibrium is reached when the forward and reverse reactions occur at exactly the same rate. By the end of this unit, students be able to make qualitative predictions about the effect of changes on systems at equilibrium when given appropriate information. 2 nd Half Term: - Students will learn a new concept which is how energy can be released or taken in during a reaction. By the end of this unit students will be able to evaluate everyday uses of exothermic and endothermic reactions. - Students will learn the difference between alkane and alkene hydrocarbons. They will be able to explain ways of reducing unwanted energy transfers, for example through lubrication and the use of thermal insulation. They also will be able to calculate the amount of energy associated with a moving object, a stretched spring and an object raised above ground level. 2 nd Half Term: Throughout this unit students will learn that the higher the thermal conductivity of a material the higher the rate of energy transfer by conduction across the material and they will be able to describe how the rate of cooling of a building is affected by the thickness and thermal conductivity of its walls. By the end of this unit students will be able to describe the main energy sources available for use on Earth include: fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), nuclear fuel, biofuel, wind, hydro-electricity, geothermal, the tides, the Sun and water waves.
