11 WHERE S MY CLASS?

12 Maple Grove Middle School Students will be in grade-level teams. Grade level teams consist of four teachers from different subjects areas plus the group of students they commonly teach. 6 th grade students will have exploratory courses in physical education, tech ed, art, and music. Daily advisory with career/college readiness, social-emotional learning skills, academic success skills, digital citizenship and enrichment activities.

13 Schedule School begins at 8:10 and ends at 2:40 There are no bells! Classes are around minutes! Passing times are built into the class times. Teachers will dismiss you. Lunches are approximately 33 minutes. NO RECESS!

15 DAILY ADVISORY HOW DO STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM ADVISORY? Stronger sense of belonging within the team and at school. Opportunities to talk in a safe environment about topics relevant to young adolescents. More personalized attention from teachers, with more focused attention to academic, social and emotional needs.

18 All middle school courses are yearlong courses. Some meet every day; others meet every other day. In sixth and seventh grade, the elective courses are designed to help students experience several different subjects so they can identify interests for further study in eighth grade and in high school.

20 ENGLISH 6 Students will develop and strengthen skills in writing, reading, speaking, listening and thinking. Students will study vocabulary and grammar. Students will analyze text to determine meaning.

21 MATH 6 Foundations of Algebra Positive an negative integers Rational numbers Algebra properties to solve problems Mean, median and range to display, interpret data and calculate probability. Ratio, measurement, scale translations and reflections

22 Pre-Algebra Topics from math strands such as measurement conversions, area, averages, and data displays are introduced in this course. Other topics include equations and functions, geometry, square roots, and probability.

23 Physical Science 6 Students will use the scientific inquiry to explain how materials, properties and humans impact engineering design. Students will have hands-on experiences with problem solving and learn about physical change, and force and motion.

24 Minnesota Studies 6 Students will expand their understanding of Minnesota history by exploring the geographical and historical developments in our state. Students will learn how individuals, groups, and events have shaped the state s history. They will analyze the interaction among the various cultures, emphasizing their contributions to society. Students will also learn basic concepts of government and personal finance.

25 Physical Education 6 This activity-based course is organized around the movement themes of body control, fitness, propelling, receiving and striking. The emphasis is on fundamentals, rules, strategies and individual fitness. High level of participation is expected Required to change into appropriate clothing Activities may include: basketball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, badminton, cooperative games, table tennis, fitness training, swimming and other indoor/outdoor activities.

26 ART 6 This class explores fun opportunities in 2D & 3D art Through hands-on activities - drawing, clay/pottery, painting, printmaking, digital art, calligraphy and collage. By the end of the course, students will have gained an understanding of the elements of art and principles of design.

27 Gateway to Technology 6 A hands-on, lab-based, Project Lead the Way course where students use a variety of tools as they learn about the design process to solve problems and understand the influence of creative and innovative design on our lives. Students learn and recognize the value of an engineering notebook to document and capture their ideas.

28 Music Choices Making Music 6- no prerequisite Choir Boys/Girls 6- no prerequisite Band 6- prerequisite Band 5 Intro to Band 6- no prerequisite Orchestra 6- Prerequisite Orchestra 5 Intro to Orchestra 6- no prerequisite

29 Band Choices Intro Band 6 Designed for students who did not take band in grade 5. These students will meet every other day and will be expected to perform at evening concerts during the year. Upon completion of this course, students would enroll in Band 7. Band 6 Prerequisite: Completion of Band 5. Students meet in class every other day. Student are required to perform in two evening concerts during the school year.

30 Intro to Orchestra 6 Intro to Orchestra 6 is a course designed for students who did not take orchestra in grade 5. Students will learn the beginning elements of playing an orchestra instrument. Students will meet every other day and will be Orchestra 6 Orchestra 6 Students meet in class every other day. Prerequisite: Completion of Orchestra 5. These students will perform in two evening concerts during the school year. Participation in these concerts is required.

32 Making Music What role does music play in our lives and in the lives of those around us? While learning the answer to these questions, students also experience making music in many ways. For students not participating in one the of the performance classes (choir, band or orchestra).

33 When making music selections students and parents should Understand the choices: the class focus and requirements Talk about your choices and agree on your decision. Ask the elementary music teacher if there are questions about which selection is appropriate for you. Changes requested during the school year are very difficult and sometimes impossible! If you decide NOT to play your instrument during the summer, contact the middle school to make a new selection!
