1 Welcome to Year 9 Progress Evening OUR VISION Challenge: ALL students, ALL lessons, ALL subjects. GSA students will receive high quality provision in ALL curriculum areas and across ALL key stages. They will achieve their full academic potential and will enjoy their experience of school while doing so.

2 What is a Progress Leader? A Progress Leader will have ownership of their year group ACADEMIC progress which includes pastoral and academic data A Progress Leader will identify barriers to learning and assist in removing them by working with all stakeholders in the academy A Progress Leader will focus on target groups to ensure adequate progress has been made A progress leader will work with Heads of Department to ensure progress is being made by students A Progress Leader develops relationships with students to encourage them to become curious learners and develop Outstanding Behaviour For Learning A Progress Leader is a bridge between pastoral and academic and also between home and school.

3 Example of Roles & Responsibilities STUDENT WELFARE MANAGERS Track and intervene in the pastoral welfare of the students Monitor daily attendance and punctuality & show impact Lead on investigations and apply appropriate sanctions Ensure effective safeguarding is implemented PROGRESS LEADERS Track the academic progress of the students using SISRA Maintain valuable relationships with students to ensure effective tracking of pastoral welfare Analyse pastoral/welfare data to create target groups for SWMs and Hs of D to implement To put the necessary interventions in place to support underachieving students

10 KS4 Maths and Exam Information It is a 2 year course completed over 3 academic years. The exam board is Edexcel There are 3 papers that students will sit at the end of KS4: They are 1 hour 30mins each 1 non-calculator and 2 calculator papers.

11 Homework 1 written homework every 2 weeks 1 online homework every other week which is done on MathsWatch MatchWatch is an online resource that has videos that helps your child understand how to complete their work. Everybody will have their own unique code to access the website.

20 Assessments in science Students will have end of topic tests which work out approximately as one per half term. The average of these assessments, classwork and exams will be used to calculate the grades students are working at. Students MUST revise and learn the work for these assessments. 30/11/2018

21 How you can support Check planners regularly for homework and that it is completed. You can purchase revision guides from school. Encourage your child to make revision resources from Year 9 (mind maps/flashcards/revision posters) and store them in a folder. Have a space dedicated for your child to study from if possible. Ensure they have plenty of sleep, water and a healthy diet to sustain them. 30/11/2018

22 GCSE Exams 30/11/2018 Students on both pathways will have 6 exams at the end of Year 11 for their GCSE s Combined Science exams will be 1hr 15mins long each, 2 for Biology, 2 for Chemistry and 2 for Physics. Separate Science exams are 1hr 45mins long each, 2 for Biology, 2 for Chemistry and 2 for Physics.

24 English in Year 9 Three assessment points Poetry, Creative and non - fiction writing, modern texts, Shakespeare and 19 th century texts. In year 9, we aim to build on the skills that are needed at GCSE. We study a similar range of texts and assess the same assessment objectives as the year 11 exams. p

25 What we re working towards 2 Language Papers Paper One 1hr 45 mins long 4 Reading questions that test students ability to retrieve information, analyse language and structure and evaluate a text critically. 1 writing question where students create a piece of descriptive writing or a story. Paper Two 1hr 45 mins 4 reading questions that test students ability to retrieve information, summarise, analyse language and structure and compare ideas and perspectives. 1 writing question where students are asked to give their own perspective on a controversial issue, in the form of a speech, letter, report, article or leaflet.

26 What we re working towards 2 Literature papers Paper One - 1 hr 45 mins long 2 essay style questions Shakespeare (Macbeth) A Christmas Carol/Jekyll and Hyde AO1 Make references to the text, develop an informed personal response to the question, use a range of parts of the text. AO2 Analyse language form and structure using subject terminology. AO3 Show an understanding of contextual factors historical context and information about the author. AO4 use accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.

27 What we re working towards 2 Literature papers Paper Two 2 hrs 15 mins long 4 essay style questions Modern Text (Blood Brothers) Poetry (comparison between two previously studied poems) and Unseen Poetry (comparison of two unseen poems) AO1 Make references to the text, develop an informed personal response to the question, use a range of parts of the text. AO2 Analyse language form and structure using subject terminology. AO3 Show an understanding of contextual factors historical context and information about the author. AO4 use accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.

28 How Can You Help Now? Encourage your child to read a range of texts (including fiction and non-fiction!) If possible, purchase the GCSE texts for your child to make their own notes in. Take your children to see productions of the GCSE texts. Engage in your child s revision by playing revision games and creating quizzes with them. Encourage children to purchase revision guides (available from finance) Useful links: Mr Bruff s channel is particularly good, especially the video tutorials he has created on analysing the Power and Conflict Poetry. Other teachers have created video tutorials on aspects of the AQA examinations. - Bitesize revision, exam board specific information and quizzes. specimen papers, mark schemes and examiner commentaries. Summaries and analysis of literary texts. No Fear Shakespeare Translation of Macbeth into modern English.

29 How Can Reading Help? Recent research into the reading skills of 15 year olds across the world found that children who are more interested in reading do better at school than those who don t read for pleasure. Reading for pleasure is more important for children's cognitive development than their parents' level of education and is a more powerful factor in life achievement than socio-economic background. The difference between children who read for 30 minutes a day compared to those who rarely read is nearly one year s worth of schooling. Children who read books often gain higher results in maths, vocabulary and spelling tests at age 16 than those who read less regularly. 15 minutes of reading per day is the minimum time recommended to make substantial gains in reading achievement. Encourage your child to read and discuss books with them develop a love of reading in your home.
