LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts Principal: Dr. Mars Assistant Principal: Ms. Collins Regents Physics ( ) Mr. Paguay (also call the school s extension 3521 to leave a message) Course Description The Regents Physics course will meet for 45 minutes every day. Lab work is integral to the understanding of the concepts in this course. At the end of the course, students will take the Physics Regents Exam, which will test their knowledge of both the concepts taught in the classroom and their use of the correct formulas. The most important thing that I want from all of you is genuine effort. I am here to help you become more sophisticated individuals, to make you more analytical in your thinking and to help you discover something new about the world. Grading Policy The official grading policy of the Science Department is as follows: 15% Homework 10% Classwork & Participation 15% Lab Portfolio 50% Assessments 10% Final Exam Your up-to-date cumulative grade can be found on PupilPath, and is updated every 2 weeks. Exams and major assessments will also be handed back within 2 weeks of collection while quizzes will usually be handed back within a week. *Students cannot pass the class merely by getting a passing grade on the Regents at the end of the year, the Regents will either be counted towards everyone s grade or no one s depending on the timing of the test. The grade for the Regents would replace the Final Exam grade for the Spring Semester if it is counted. Students will get grades on homework, quizzes, laboratory work, projects, and exams. Exams are typically worth 100 points and will consist of questions similar to ones students will see on the Regents Exam. Quizzes will consist of problems from the textbook, supplements, and old Regents Exams. The 50% that goes into your total grade from Assessments can be broken down into 30% tests and 20% quizzes, so that tests are 30% of your total grade and quizzes are 20% of your total grade. You cannot share reference tables and calculators during quizzes and tests so you must bring your own or have a much harder time doing the same work. Extra credit may be offered during the semester and will count up to 3 points on top of your total grade. The Regents may or may not be counted towards your final grade in the Spring semester, depending on when the test is administered in June. Tests will be held on Thursdays. Homework assignments will consist of worksheets provided by me, which I can collect at any time and grade as homework, along with assignments posted on Quest. Homework worksheets are a maximum of 2 points each with full credit being awarded for complete work, 1 credit for incomplete work and 0 for missing work. Homework assignments on Quest are electronically timed so it is crucial to do the work and submit it through the site on time because the system will not allow for late submissions. Each homework on Quest will be weighted the same towards your Homework grade. Classwork and Participation will mainly be based on participation in whiteboard discussions, which are socratic dialogues where students are able to express their thinking and questions in an open and safe environment. This grade will also be calculated by the collection of Do Nows and Exit Tickets throughout random days of the semester. Having the work be correct and complete gives you the full 2 points for classwork that day, having some done or not done well will give you 1 point and having nothing as work or being absent without an excuse will result in a 0 for the classwork. Those who are absent due to some excuse will have time to make up the classwork that I collect on the day they come back to school.

2 Projects could typically involve groups of students developing a plan, collecting data and/or research, and presenting conclusions in a meaningful way. Laboratory work is student centered and inquiry based and is discussed below. Note taking is important and will help you greatly in this class. I will provide you with PowerPoints and videos whenever we do information-delivery style lessons on the class website so you have material from class to look over and study but having your own personalized notes will make the studying process easier. It is also a great skill to have in college and will make things easier for you later on. While note taking, you should try to condense the information you see and hear into a few phrases, maybe a sentence or a sketch, that will resonate with you and help you retain and understand the content. Just copying down the information from the slides is not the optimal way to retain it. Notes should also include practice work of problems we try in class. Your notes should reflect your logic and thought process on a certain topic. Snacks are allowed under the following conditions, otherwise they will be not allowed anymore: - The food is consumed in the first 10 minutes of class. - Leftover food and wrappers have to be in the garbage, not on the floor. Texts Prentice Hall Brief Review Physics: The Physical Setting by Bernadine Hladik Cook 2015 Review Book Holt McDougal Physics And one of the following: Barron s Regents Course Series, Let s Review: Physics, The Physical Setting (Optional) OR High Marks: Regents Physics Made Easy (Optional) Topics - Mathematical Background and Physical Quantities - Kinematics - Forces - Momentum - Energy - Electricity and Magnetism - Waves and Sounds - Light and Optics - Modern and Nuclear Physics Laboratory Work All students taking Regents level courses are required to meet laboratory requirement set forth by NYS, (a separate sheet is provided for signatures). To meet these requirements each student must: Complete 1200 minutes of laboratory (27 labs) Complete a satisfactory written report for each lab Demonstrate proficiency in lab skills and safety. Students are expected to obtain and keep a lab folder where they will maintain a record of their laboratory work. Students will be given standard materials and an objective to complete or question to answer. Students will work in pairs or groups to complete labs in class, but each student must submit their own work. Students are required to keep a folder of these lab reports. There is a schedule, which will be posted separately, for makeup labs throughout the semester which you should attend if you are missing labs. You cannot make up any labs from the Fall during the Spring semester. Lab is Tuesdays. Class website, Class Participation and Attendance Students must be in class every day and on time. Students who arrive late must provide a pass. Students must be prepared everyday with all supplies.

3 Daily start of class routine: Copy new information and announcements into homework planner, write proper heading, copy the Aim and complete the Do Now. You will need to register for Google Classroom using your Laguardia Gmail and also the University of Texas Quest learning system. We will go over logging in and registering for the sites in the first few days of class. *Device policy: Students are not allowed to use electronic and recording devices unless instructed to do so with my permission. Please see school wide BYOD device policy for more information. Discipline 1. First misbehavior will be dealt with a general warning to the class 2. Second misbehavior will result in 2 points permanently lost from the participation grade 3. Third misbehavior will result in 4 total points permanently lost from the participation grade and a phone call home or 4. Fourth misbehavior will be dealt with by the Dean Homework Homework worksheets will be checked and collected randomly. Quest assignments will be posted ahead of time and you will be given at least 2 days to complete the homework. Solutions will be provided after the due date. Missing homework: Every missing homework will result in a 0 for that homework grade. * If homework was assigned before an absence, it must be submitted the day of return. If assigned during absence, you have one day to make it up. There are no homework makeups unless I am made aware of some special circumstances or blackouts due to studio work. The Quest system will not let you turn in late work so you have to make sure that those assignments are in on time. If you are late to class (without a pass/note) and homework has been checked, you will receive a deduction from your homework grade. Exams/Assessments Tests/quizzes will be given approximately every other week. If you will be absent please me, or provide an absent note upon return. No makeup exams are permitted without this documentation. I reserve the right to give pop quizzes throughout the year. Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated. Dr. Lisa Mars, Principal Alyssa Collins, Assistant Principal Dear Parents and Students, It can be confusing to understand how science labs are tracked in PupilPath and reported on transcripts. The Science Department has put together some helpful explanations to hopefully ease some of the confusion. Science Labs in Pupil Path: Generally, students will have labs per semester in a Regents science course.the number of labs reported in PupilPath refers to the number of labs your child has completed. While the number of Labs show as failing grade in PupilPath, please know that this does not mean your student is failing the lab portion of the course. We are not able to change how PupilPath reports this number nor how it is interpreted. Typically, a student must have 13 labs at the semester to be on track, and 27 labs in June to have met the lab requirement. Science Labs on your Child s Transcript: On the official transcript (not PupilPath,) Lab grades show as numeric grades that are not averaged into a student s GPA. Large schools like ours use a numeric lab grade to ensure that the student has enough labs to be eligible to sit for the appropriate Science Regents Exam. We ve tried other methods of record keeping, but this seems to be the best of all options. Colleges want to see that there is a lab attached to the course, and they are not worried by the number shown generally, the same Admissions Rep reads an entire area (like New York City/New York State) and so they are familiar with the various ways schools track labs.

Dr. Lisa Mars, Principal Alyssa Collins, Assistant Principal September 8, 2016 Dear Parent/Guardian: Your child is currently enrolled in a science course that culminates in a Regents examination in June. The State Education Department requires that for admission to a science Regents Examination a student must complete the state-mandated laboratory requirement. The laboratory component is in addition to the classroom instruction associated with earning a unit of credit and must include at least 1200 minutes of hands-on laboratory with satisfactory reports on file. In addition, laboratory work is a component of class work that determines the course grade. If a student is absent from school on the assigned laboratory day, the laboratory exercise must be made up and satisfactory report submitted within one week of the student s scheduled laboratory class. In order to contribute toward the course grade the report must be submitted, Laboratory make-up schedules are posted on the 5 th floor Science Department bulletin boards. Laboratory reports submitted after the dates below will not be computed in the report card grade for the term. However these laboratory reports should and must be submitted to your teacher.
