15 The key to successful revision Limit distractions put phone in a different room, organise group chats at specific times Revise in a quiet comfortable place provide revision tools: post-its, pens, space, snacks Make a revision timetable and stick to it! Set an alarm and start early it s better to revise in the morning Reward yourself with going out, meeting friends, phone time, gaming, etc. Eat healthily and exercise regularly don t give up sport but may need to cut down on training Take a break - every 25 mins for 5 mins then after 3 lots of 25 break fro longer 20mins

18 Our Year 7 Curriculum at Hazel Grove Termly Schemes of Work: Autumn 1: Fantasy Writing Autumn 2: War Poetry Spring 1 : Exam Skills Writing Spring 2: Shakespeare the study of opening Acts of Shakespearian plays Summer 1 and 2: The Novel Reading and Creative Writing Assessments: Every half term one formal assessment will take place. Assessment Objectives and question stems mirror those of GCSE style examinations.

19 Your Role in Assessments Following on from an assessment, all students will receive an feedback sheet. This will provide students with areas of strength and areas for further development Parental Comments Following the teacher s assessment, your child will bring their assessment home It is hoped this can be used as an opportunity for you to have conversation with your child s progress and areas for development Please sign and comment on their sheet your child s teacher will set this as a small piece of homework

20 Homework What else plays an important role in your child s English curriculum? Every Year 7 student is set weekly spelling and reading homework by their English teacher. Every time our students read they should record what they have read, with personal comments about the book, in their reading records these reading records should be signed by parents/carers. During Autumn Term 2 (October December) students will complete the Christmas Book project. Students are given their weekly spellings in class, however, both spelling and reading reminders can be found on Show My Homework.

24 Let s Think! Every two weeks, every Year 7 class has a Let s Think lesson a cognitive acceleration programme and is proven to raise levels of attainment. These lessons are designed to encourage discussion and debate and adopt a no pen rule.

25 Looking ahead How your child can revise for their Year 7 English exam Revise writing skills and features of Discursive Writing Make postcards for language and structural techniques reminding students of definitions and examples Practise producing discursive writing based on a stimulus or specific topic- this could be a newspaper headline, quote or statement Practise writing full discursive pieces, using structures studied in class, in timed conditions Purchase revision guides e.g. York Notes or CGP (the exam will focus on writing) Make use of websites such as BBC Bitesize Read a wide range of texts to become more confident in identifying, and then using, various sentence lengths and punctuation Year 7 exam week commences:

26 The English Council! In the summer term of Year 7, students are given the opportunity to apply to be a part of the English Council during Year 8. They go through a full application process by first entering a letter of why they would suit the role, then if successful they are invited to an interview and finally a select few are chosen to sit on the council. The role itself: Meet once a fortnight Help to come up with and run competitions Discuss and decide on a Recommended Read They re involved in creating and running a student voice And much more...

29 Assessment Linear exam worth 100% to be taken in November 2013 (6 th and 8 th ) Your child will sit an assessment at the end of each half term and this will be a topic based assessment. Exam spilt into two papers: Non-calculator (50%) Calculator (50%)

30 Homework In year 7, homework is set by the class teacher once a week on the topic they are currently studying.

31 Homework Support For those pupils who feel they need some support with their homework, the maths department offer a drop-in service every Tuesday lunchtime in W8b. If your child needs support with their homework they can receive help from a maths teacher.

33 Revision Ideas Topic sheets are glued into the front of each student s book which are then filled in after every each topic. Students self-assess at the end of each topic. A MathsWatch clip number is given as a revision aid for each topic.

34 Revision Ideas Before each assessment, a revision list is provided 1-2 weeks prior to the test, listing MathsWatch Videos to watch.

35 Revision Ideas After each assessment, each pupil completes a self assessment sheet to identify areas for improvement.

36 Revision Ideas Assessments are completed after each topic. These are done on buff coloured paper so stand out in student s books. A MathsWatch clip number is given as a revision aid for each element of the topic.

46 Y7 Science Students have 7 lessons of Science a fortnight and are taught by one or more members of staff. However, the curriculum is split into the 3 separate science topics and science skills lessons.

With parents/guardians permission have a go at wiring a plug. Use the internet (BBC Bitesize) to find out the information. If you don t have a plug or don t have permission, then use the internet to draw a diagram of how to wire a plug.
