Phone: (410) Course Overview The English curriculum in CCPS has been written to align to the new Common Core State Standards. These standards increase the rigor of the course work in order to get students college and career ready. This course comprises of two modules which ensure that all students, through diligent work and guided instruction, meet the standards outlined by the Common Core. The first module will be a focus on the thematic study of Identity and Human Rights. Through the study of an extended text, 1984, and supplemental texts and other media, students will improve reading and writing skills to prepare for their future. Regular reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, language, speaking, listening, and research skills are essential to this study. The second module presents the theme of ethical choices. Through a study of the informational text, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and the third module is a study of Shakespeare s Macbeth in which students will continue to build and extend upon the Common Core skills developed in the first module. English 10 will ensure that students become stronger readers and better writers who are well- prepared for their future educational plans. Necessary Materials: -Small 3-Ring Binder (strictly for English 10) -Pens & pencils - Flash drive (optional but useful) -Loose leaf paper Classroom Policies: Tardiness: You are expected to be in your seat and copying the drill of the day when the bell rings. Westminster High School rules and regulations regarding absence and tardiness apply as well. If you think you may be tardy, get a pass to enter class. Being tardy without a pass two times will result in a discipline referral. Classroom Conduct: Students are expected to treat all with respect, courtesy, and kindness. Not doing so may result in phone calls home. Profanity is not tolerated, and there will be no eating and drinking in class. ONLY water is allowed. Leaving the Classroom: You must use your agenda to be dismissed from class. Please consider an appropriate time for requesting permission to leave. BYOD: With the institution of the new Bring Your Own Device policy, students are permitted to bring their Personal Electronic Devices (PED) to school. This might include a laptop, tablet, netbook, mobile phone, MP3 player, or ereader. The use of these devices in the classroom is at the teacher s discretion. All school policies apply in this class. This includes policies on absences, tardiness, and dress code. Consult the student handbook if you have questions. Grading Policies:

2 Grading Scale: A = %, B = %, C = %, D = %, F = % Scores shall be rounded to the nearest whole number. Any score below.5 rounds down, and any score.5 and above rounds up. This course will be evaluated on a weighted points system in accordance with Carroll County Public Schools grading and homework policy- formative assignments will be worth 30% of the student s grade, while summative assignments are worth 70%. Examples of formative assignments include classwork, journals, quizzes, and discussion forums. Examples of summative assignments include tests, essays, speeches, and major research projects. Students and parents/guardians are encouraged to go online via Home Access to view grades. It is your responsibility as the student to keep informed of your progress and bring any concerns or inaccuracies to the attention of the teacher. Attendance & Absences: Students are responsible for getting and completing work missed due to an absence. They have as many days as they were absent to make up their missed work for full credit. Check the While you were out folder before class If work was due during your absence you will be expected to turn it in the day you return. Homework: Homework will be assigned on an as-needed basis to fulfill one of the following purposes: o To prepare for a subsequent lesson (e.g. reading assignments) o To practice or review to strengthen concept or skill development. o To evaluate what students know by applying, extending, or integrating knowledge and understanding through projects or other assignments. Late work: For each school day late, students will lose 10% per day for the first five school days late. Students may earn up to 50% for completed assignments after that time. Late work, when collected, is marked with the date. It is not given grading priority over current assignments. No late work will be accepted

3 in the last week of the quarter. Second-Chance Learning: So that a student s grade is an accurate reflection of learning, second-chance learning opportunities may be available at the teacher s discretion. Second-chance learning is designed to allow students opportunities to correct and improve on their work so they can master the concepts and skills we are learning. Second-chance learning is not meant to be used as a regular practice by a student or as a substitute for lack of preparation. In order to take advantage of second-chance learning, the student will complete the Second-Chance Learning Plan and confer with the teacher to determine an agreed upon re-learning plan. All re-learning opportunities must be completed outside of regular class time in a timely manner. If the redo/retake grade is higher than the original grade, it will replace the original grade. Flex: Students must show initiative and responsibility by scheduling FLEX time when they need one-on-one instruction, additional help or clarification, or second chance learning opportunities. There is a Flex sign-up book in a designated area of the room If I need to meet with you regarding grades, missing work, etc. I will request you on the appropriate day. ELA portfolios: Each student will have a portfolio in which s/he will collect the required reading and writing assignments for this course. This portfolio will follow the student to the next level English class and provide evidence of growth in skill development. Parents/Guardians are welcome to view this portfolio at any time. Electronic Submission of Work: Carroll County Public Schools prepares students to understand the importance of plagiarism prevention by utilizing a web-based tool, Turnitin.com. By using this tool to submit their written work, students learn about plagiarism when material from another source is identified. The tool evaluates the paper, and the student is provided with an originality report. This originality report matches the text in the student s paper to other written text from various sources: Internet, previous student submissions to Turnitin, and databases of journal articles and periodicals. In turn, instructors assist students with crediting sources appropriately, making Turnitin a valuable instructional tool. In addition, this tool is another means of preparing students for coursework

4 beyond high school. Turnitin is frequently used by colleges and universities to prevent plagiarism. To use this resource, students must enroll under their teacher s direction to submit written work. Each student receives a class ID number and a password in order to enter the Site. A student enrolls using their own address, class ID number, and password. Students may have the teacher submit written work for them if a parent objects to their child having direct access to the program. Such requests should be submitted in writing directly to the teacher. Students may enroll independently in this program if they are eighteen (18) years of age or older.
