1 MIXED PROBUS CLUB OF BURLINGTON NEWSLETTER Volume 1 Issue 6 November 2017 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE: NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2017 Greetings one and all, at the start of the festive season. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, you cannot have failed to notice that the solemnity of Remembrance Day has now given way to the jollity of Christmas. Stores are brightly decorated and Santa Claus parades are happening in towns and cities everywhere in our region. Santa certainly spreads himself thinly in the weeks leading up to Christmas! I hope you will be joining us for our very first Christmas luncheon on 29 th November. Tickets have sold well and we are expecting an entertaining time in which to forget the to do lists and relax with PROBUS friends while we all enjoy a delicious meal. Our next meeting will be held on 13 th December, a couple of weeks earlier than the usual fourth Wednesday, We will be back at the Art Gallery of Burlington for that meeting, and will have a guest speaker to entertain us. Details are in this newsletter, which will cover both November and December. There will also be an opportunity at the December meeting to buy a parking pass for all our 2018 meetings at the AGB, if you wish. Your next Newsletter will be published in January Meanwhile, I wish all our PROBUS members a joyous and safe festive season, and a happy, safe and healthy New Year. DECEMBER S SPEAKER Paul Benedetti Paul Benedetti is an awardwinning journalist, author and writer. His essays have appeared in the Globe and Mail, Canadian Living, Reader s Digest and regularly in the Hamilton Spectator where he has a widely -read Saturday column. He is a two-time winner of the Ontario Newspaper Award for Humour Writing. In 2010, one of his pieces won the Canadian National Newspaper Award for Best Short Feature. He is the author of You Can Have A Dog When I m Dead: Essays on Life at an Angle, Dundurn Press. Paul is the former Co-ordinator of the Journalism Program at Western University, where he continues to lecture full-time, teaching journalism and writing. He lives in Hamilton with his wife and his three children, all of whom were born on May 29th!. His book will be available for sale at the meeting. Patricia Howard 1

For George the world is wide, vast and full of discovery and beauty. He is grateful to be able to embrace all the world and to engage in his passion for living; his passion for arts and his passion for giving you what he knows about a few things. His courses in Music, Opera, Artists, Mythology, and Architecture have brought knowledge, appreciation and love of the classics to many Burlington Seniors. Merry Christmas, his favourite time of the year. Enjoy the journey. George is a ray of sunshine. We are fortunate to have this exceptional talent in our community. The purchase of the pass is a one time offering at the beginning of the year and passes will be available from the AGB front desk at our first meeting in January Benefits: Potential savings if you park for more than 1 and 3/4 hours and you don t have to get your parking pass from the machine. Much was discussed and all participated. Our November Meeting will be held 9:30 to 11am on THURSDAY NOVEMBER 30 th at the Central Library. Proceed to the information desk on the second floor and ask for our location. This is an open meeting so come if you can and enjoy learning more about the City, Province, Country and World you live in. "WANTED" Members to act as Subs for the Euchre Group. If you like to play Euchre, BUT, don't want to play every 2nd week think about being a Sub player. They are a great group of people who have a lot of fun. Twenty-one Mixed Probus Club Members have signed up for this Interest Group and if we can ever get it off the ground we feel sure it will prove to be a whole lot of fun for those participating!! There is not a lot of time and energy involved in being the Convener, and it can be rotated among group members. Once it's up and running it pretty well runs itself.
