1 SBDM PARENT CANDIDATES BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: CHRIS ALDRIDGE Hello! My name is Chris Aldridge, and I m one of your four parent representatives on the Lafayette Site Based Decision Making (SBDM) Council. I m running for re-election for another term. I believe the experience I ve gained on the Council the past two years, including the experience I gained through the selection process of hiring our Principal, and my work on the budget committee will enable me to better serve our Lafayette families. I m the general manager of WTVQ-TV (ABC 36). My wife of thirty years, Eva Marshall-Aldridge, teaches 7th and 8th grade language arts at SCAPA Bluegrass. Our son Lewis, a senior in the Pre-Engineering Program, is Co-President of the Senior Class, serves on the student council, and is Co-President of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Club. Lewis is also a member of the Lafayette Choir and the Lafayette Generals Lacrosse Team. Our daughter Lane, a freshman SCAPA band major, is a member of the Pride of the Bluegrass, the Lafayette Generals Marching Band. Lane is also a clarinetist in the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra and is in the Pre-Engineering Program too. Our family has lived in Lexington for 20 years during which time I ve served on numerous community non-profit boards. These include: the YMCA of Central Kentucky; the Better Business Bureau; Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and; the Lexington Arts and Cultural Council where I chaired the Campaign for the Arts. I currently serve on the board of directors of the Kentucky Broadcasters Association where I chair the members services committee. I m a member of the Lexington Rotary Club, and Executive Vice-President of Lafayette Generals Lacrosse, Inc. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and taught for three years as an adjunct professor in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications at the University of Kentucky. Lafayette High School has been an important part of our family for the past four years and will be so for the next three years as well. I hope you will allow me to serve our great school another year on the Lafayette SBDM Council. Thank you!

2 Background: Daughter: Son: Wife: LAFAYETTE HIGH SCHOOL SBDM Parent Council Member Nominee David Ewen Sarah, 15 ½ years; sophomore Stuart, 21 years; college senior Julianne We have lived in Lexington for more than 25 years and our daughter, Sarah, is a sophomore at LHS. Our son, Stuart, graduated from Dunbar and is a college senior in Cleveland. Julianne and I have been active members of the Lafayette community. Julianne serves on the school s Wellness Committee while I am on the SBDM, and three subcommittees: Budget, Parent and Community Involvement, and the Curriculum Committee. I also serve as the liaison between the PTSA and the SBDM. We firmly support Sarah s involvement in Lafayette s academic and extra curricular experiences including her interest in chorus activities, playing on the Girls Soccer Team, the Outdoors Club, Beta Club and Mu Alpha Theta. I have extensive SBDM experience having served on 15 school councils. I believe this knowledge provides an excellent background to help increase student achievement and better the learning environment at Lafayette. Comment: My experience as a parent representative on school Councils has given me the opportunity to learn about how schools work and I have obtained some insights as to why they work. It is an interesting and engaging service and I would like the chance to continue to learn and represent YOUR views on the Council in this upcoming school year. During the course of SBDM duties I have always been prepared to fully discuss agenda items and maintained a near-perfect attendance record for the many regular and special meetings. I would also like to think that I have provided meaningful insight and thoughtful contribution to the Council s deliberations and would hope my fellow council members would agree. I look forward to working on Lafayette s Council and pressing forward YOUR issues and concerns. By providing the Council an awareness of your collective ideas we will better direct the course of our children s education and enhance the achievement of all Lafayette students. To this end, I pledge to be a prepared, consistent, and active council participant. I d like to think that I could assist in helping to make an excellent school program, perhaps, a little better for my child and for yours. Please, let me know your thoughts. Education: BA, Political Science, University of Kentucky MUPP, Master of Urban Planning and Policy, University of Illinois-Chicago MBA, Master s in Business Administration, University of Kentucky Occupation: I have spent 26 years as a Management Consultant assisting city and county governments with developing and implementing financial and personnel systems, and preparing and administering federal grants for community development projects. I am a former member and past officer of the Board of Directors for Manchester Center, Inc., a non-profit community center that provides pre-school and after-school day care facilities. I am also a current member and past Board of Director for the Kentucky Public Human Resources Association.

3 Dr. BILL HALL JR.. Dr. Bill Hall Jr. is currently the Registrar at Asbury University. He graduated from Asbury University with his teaching degree and has taught elementary, middle, high school and college students. He recently earned his doctoral degree in Instruction and Administration from the University of Kentucky. He has a freshman daughter, Victoria, who plays in the band. Bill s professional background includes working for Host Communications as the director of the web division and as an entrepreneur, owning Thrifty Car Rental of Lexington for 6 years. His experience in business, education and most important, as a parent, allow him provide good representation for you on the Site Based Decision Making Counsel.

4 KEVIN HOLM-HUDSON My name is Kevin Holm-Hudson and I am asking for your support for Lafayette High School s Site-Based Decision making Council. I am part of a family devoted to education and the arts. My wife Karen and I have two children who have benefited from a great education at Lafayette: Miranda (who was a visual arts major at SCAPA-Bluegrass and SCAPA-Lafayette and will graduate in 2013) and Toby (who will be a sophomore in and plays the largest bass drum in the Lafayette Marching Band drumline). Karen has taught public school music, directed a Kindermusik studio, and is currently the associate pastor for families at Vineyard Community Church. I have been on the faculty of the University of Kentucky School of Music since I was a member of Fayette County Public Schools 20/20 Vision community workgroup in 2005, and more recently led efforts to speak against Hallie Bandy s negative article on school band programs in TOPS Magazine, which led to TOPS response of several articles on the benefits of school music and an article on the Lafayette Marching Band s Rose Bowl trip in a later issue. I believe that an effective education integrates the arts in a holistic way across the curriculum. Study after study shows the benefits of a structured arts curriculum in students academic and social development. At the same time, I realize that we face difficult economic choices and are challenged to manage resources more effectively and with more accountability. I believe we can do this without sacrificing the considerable academic and artistic advantages that our children, as Generals, now enjoy. I am eager to work with parents, teachers and administrators to enhance Lafayette s considerable strengths, both within the school and outside through its support from the community.

5 LORRAINE KINLEY My name is Lorraine Kinley; I am Vice President and Mortgage Processing Manager for Central Bank & Trust Co. I have been employed at Central Bank for 17 years, am currently a member of there is committee, previously been a member of their Compliance and Employee Recognition Committees. My husband Victor works for Kentucky American Water Co., my son Mikal is a freshman and a member of the Marching Band and Jazz Band. My son Daniel is in the fourth grade attends Picadome Elementary and involved in sports. I am an active member at Consolidated Baptist Church where I was an assistant teacher in the Kindergarten class for 4 years. I currently volunteer at Picadome Elementary and the band as time permits and previously volunteered at Jessie Clark Middle School and the YMCA of Central Kentucky. I feel strongly that education, hard work and dedication are the key to success and that parents, teachers and students should work together towards a common goal. I am a supporter of the Arts and feel they bring culture and structure to the community. I also believe that a parent s presence is extremely important to our children, their growth and success.

6 BECKY SHELTON Becky Shelton taught English for 10 years at Paul Laurence Dunbar High in Lexington, KY, where she served on that school s SBDM Council for a year. After leaving Dunbar, she was an adjunct faculty at Northwood University at their facility located at the Toyota Plant in Georgetown, KY where she taught courses in Report Writing. She also tutored students at Sylvan Learning Center in Academic Reading, Writing, Study Skills, and Homework Support and she currently tutors UK Athletes at their Center for Academics and Tutorial Services (CATS) and teaches at Bluegrass Technical and Community. Becky is familiar with education and teaching is near and dear to her heart and she would bring a fresh perspective to Lafayette High School s SBDM. With two children of her own that are currently attending, and one who will attend LHS, she wants to be a part of the decision-making process of the school that will play a large role in her children s educational careers.
