The 2013 Fall edition of the one and only KAE4-HA Outburst - the official newsletter of the Kentucky Association of Extension 4-H Agents. The Outburst is your source of KAE4-HA news to keep you up to date and well informed of what goes on through out the year in KAE4-HA. Its an exciting time of year right now in each and every Kentucky County as well as in the State 4-H Office. Its enrollment time for 4-H! A time when 4-H agents promote the largest youth organization to excited youth all over the nation. A time when newly formed 4-H clubs begin. A time when an 8 year old turns 9 and enrolls for the very first time in the local 4-H program. A time when 9-19 year olds begin a new project or continues onto a new level. It s also a time when 4-H agents travel to their annual National 4-H Agents Conference to build relations, learn new skills and expand programs to reach their full potential. And so, this Outburst of information will serve as a bridge for the agent to the association, so productivity can be maximized in our association. Well deserving agents will be recognized for their hard work and accomplishments through out the year! The Outburst will provide up dates in the Fall and Spring through the electronic newsletter format. Committee chairs, officers and members feel free to submit articles and/ or information to me for the newsletter. Looking forward to a great 4-H year! 2 KAE4-HA News Message from the President Susan Turner, KAE4-HA President Continuing the legacy of KAE4-HA Presidents Recently I began delivering the children's message at our church. My first message was entitled "putting first things first". I studied and thought about this topic for days and realized that for things to be in order in our lives, we have to put first things first. Our life won't work very well if we first put on our shoes then our socks, or if we first brush our teeth and then put toothpaste on our brush. Those small, daily tasks are easy enough to figure out, but what comes first in our professional lives? At our recent Galaxy meeting, it was energizing to see our fellow KAE4HA members recognized on regional and national levels for their innovative programs and years of service. It was amazing to see how our members came together and hauled a variety of items all the way to Pittsburgh for an auction basket (which netted our southern region $ highest item of the auction and we didn't even do the CATS cheer!) It was enjoyable to relax a little and enjoy each other as friends and it made me proud to be from Kentucky 4-H when I heard people talk about the wonderful workshop they had just been to presented by a Kentucky 4-H professional. National task force meetings, business meetings, and committee meetings had Kentucky representation. I was very honored to see my friend, Agriculture Commissioner James Comer, honored as a National Friend of Extension and nominated by a fellow 4-H professional. All of this proves that Kentucky 4-H professionals are putting first things first and it shows. KAE4HA is supporting our members through supporting each other; and in supporting each other to achieve more, dream bigger, and go further - our children ultimately benefit. First things first. 4 KAE4-HA Task Force Chairs & Goals Task Force membership is a vital part of the association. Below, you will find a list of KAE4-HA Task Forces and plans of work for the coming year. If you have any questions regarding Task Forces, please contact the Programs Committee Chair: Janeen Tramble (jtramble@uky.edu). Afterschool (Chair: Julie Brown) Goal: To raise awareness of the current afterschool program, resources, and professional development available for youth educators throughout the United States. Animal Science (Chair: Mollie Tichenor) Goal: To help members understand more about animal science opportunities and to create documents and organization that cam be templates for anyone who want to use them. Camping & Environmental Education (Chair: Danielle Hutchins) Goal: To develop a 4-H Camp/Environmental Camp promotional video and get it in markets across Kentucky including Teen Conference, 4-H Summit, and other gatherings like the State Fair; To enhance and support Camping and Environmental Education in the 4-H Youth Development Extension Work. Communication & Expressive Arts (Chair: Isaac Hollon) Goal: To raise awareness. promote, and facilitate the sharing of program ideas related to communication and expressive arts to 4-H members, volunteers, and professionals. Geospatial Programs (Chair: Jann Burks) Goal: To promote geospatial technologies in the 4-H program; To showcase youth geospatial projects; To provide geospatial resource information. Global Citizenship (Chair: Verlene Congleton) Goal: To help 4-H members, volunteer leaders, and staff develop and apply citizenship skills in civic education, cultural and global competencies, civic engagement, personal development, and service. Healthy Living (Chair: Wanda Paris) Goal: To promote healthy living programming ideas and information to members nationwide. Urban Programming (Chair: Vacant) Goal: To increase dialogue and understanding of the unique needs of 4-H programming in urban areas. Workforce Development and Career Exploration (Chair: Janet Turley) Goal: To raise awareness of workforce development and career exploration activities and programs available for youth educators throughout Kentucky and the United States. Youth In Governance (Chair: Roberta Hunt) Goal: To encourage 4-H professionals to advocate for the voice, influence, and decision making authority of young people.

7 Agent Spotlight Dana Anderson Mercer County What are you most proud of? My kids, for the fact they have accepted Christ and live Christ like in everything they do. How do you keep yourself motivated? I try to keep things in perspective, remember this isn t about me but the impact of others. Seeing a child learn something new from a program or activity is great motivation. Our very own Janeen Tramble, Trigg County, was featured in a country music video by Danielle Bradbery, winner of The Voice. Be sure to visit CMT.com to check it out! Jan Gibson Perry County What advice do you have for fellow agents? When it stops being fun, interesting, and rewarding, move on. Were you a 4-H member? If so, what were your projects or activities? I was a 4-H er woodworking, sewing, art, foods. I gave demonstrations, speeches, and I remember once being in the Talent Show had a monologue! I was the most successful with a purple in woodworking at the State Fair, must have not been very many projects there that year.
