2 ... FROM THE PRESIDENT: JUNE 12 Coves, Computers & Coffee: Boot-Up Cafes Just over half of Australian households have home internet access and 75% of households have access to a computer - impressive figures given how new this technology is. However that leaves a lot of people without access. In an age when most government services and information on almost any topic are readily sourced from the web, these Australians, generally the less affluent ones, are being left behind. Back in 2000 Ed Ackman decided that he could do something to assist those without internet access by setting up Boot-Up Cafes in community facilities around Sydney. He cajoled friends and firms to donate funds, equipment and time and over four years set up 23 computers in five locations. Each installation was provided with new, up-to-date equipment, from PCs to printers to chairs and desks, as a sign of respect to the users and on the principle that potential employers would need people capable of working with the latest programs. In 2005, as he was relocating to New Zealand, Ed passed on his idea, now packaged with a four-stand special desk designed by his brother, as a "franchise" to our Club. Subsequently Boot-Ups have been installed at Newtown and Auburn, with another this month in Winmalee, Lower Blue Mountains. A further inner city installation, for a residence for homeless men, is under evaluation. Meanwhile Ed (shown in the photo) has taken his concept overseas, installing four workstations last year in a public school in isolated Savusavu, Fiji - "a real revolution for the school and the students". The typical project, which would cost about $7,000 for four workstations and a printer, is funded by the recipient organisation, the local Rotary Club, and Sydney Cove, in equal parts.if you know of an organisation which might benefit from a Boot-Up, please talk to Michael Maher, Dominic Williams or Bruce Hill - the Boot-Up team. Tom Gervay PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP: JUNE 12 PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP AWARDS 2009: ROTARY CLUB OF SYDNEY COVE VOCATIONAL SERVICES Background: The second object of Rotary is high ethical standards in business and professional life; the recognition of worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society. Fiona Lavan INTERNATIONAL HELP by John Hodge Dear Mr. Hodge, My name is Michael von Stumberg and I am a member of the Rotary Club Hummling zu Sogel (Germany). At the beginning of July my step son, Paul Philipp Schaefer (24 years old), is moving to Sydney to start a one year "Master of International Business" Program at Macquarie University. After his High School degree, Paul travelled through New Zealand, Fiji and Africa for about one year. Subsequently he started his studies at the Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main (Germany). By the end of March 09 he graduated with a "Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration". Currently he is employed at "BASF- The Chemical Company". Besides his studies Paul is primarily interested in sports where his focus lies on field hockey which he has played competitively since he was 5 years of age. Further he likes surfing, sailing and almost any outdoor activity. As already mentioned he will study at Macquarie University where the Program commences on 3 August 09. In order to settle, Paul will arrive on 7 July 09. As you can certainly imagine, Paul is looking for lovely accommodation in order to realize a gorgeous time in Australia. As parts of the Program are conducted at the International College of Management (located in Manly) he hopes to stay in the Manly area or somewhere between Macquarie University and International College of Management. If you or some of your Rotarian friends are able to provide any help concerning the upcoming accommodation search I would really appreciate your efforts. Please feel free to contact me or Paul Philipp any time. Thank you very much in advance. Sincerely, Michael von Stumberg Contact: Zahnarzt-von-Stumberg@t-online.de or paulschaefer@gmx.de CHANGEOVER LUNCH: JUNE 21 An invitation to join Tom & Meg Gervay at: THE ROTARY CLUB OF UPPER BLUE MOUNTAINS SUNRISE The Rotary Club of Sydney Cove has been invited by David Hart the incoming President to their Annual Changeover Luncheon - Sunday 21 June 2009

The Paul Harris Fellow is named for Paul Harris, who founded Rotary with three business associates in Chicago in The Paul Harris Fellows was established in his honour in 1957 to express appreciation for contribution to the humanitarian and education programs of The Rotary Foundation. Bruce joined the Rotary Club of Sydney Cove as a younger man in November 1997, over 12 years ago. During all those years, Bruce has been actively involved in the full range of Club activities. He is the Chairman of our Community Services Committee. He took over from Ed Ackman as the prime mover in the establishment of the Internet Cafes for the underpriviledged. The two most recent cafes have been at Lidcombe (mainly for Sudanese immigrants) and in Fiji, while currently a new Internet Cafe is being established at Winmalee in the Blue Mountains jointly with the Rotary Club of Upper Blue Mountains Sunrise. Bruce has been a member of our FAIM teams to the Solomon Islands and has led the District GSE team to Menduza, Chile. He is also the land-based manager of our Club Regatta. Bruce has been involved in Youth Exchange, hosting a number of incoming students and has been the ghost writer for many of the articles you have read in the Bulletin over the past 10 years. He is the Club's In-House Poet Laureate and an integral member of the Sounds of Sydney Fundraising event. The ladies find him to be suave and charming while the rest of us just think of Bruce as an enthusiastic and dependable contributor to all the Club stands for and a great guy. Bruce is a most worthy recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow. On This Day... from John Morrison... World Environment Day British Secretary of State for War John Profumo resigned in a sex scandal. In June 1961 Profumo had an affair with Christine Keeler who was 27 years his junior and who was also having an affair with Yevgeny Ivanov, a naval attache at the Russian Embassy. Keeler and her friend, Mandy Rice-Davies, are still alive, living in London A Bose-Einstein condensate was created!! 1723 Adam Smith, Scottish economist, born 1883 John Maynard Keynes, English economist, born 1910 O. Henry, American author, died - he wrote "Cabbages and Kings" in which he coined the term "banana republic"... From The M&A... Your M@A is feeling incredibly bitter & twisted this week. All year the poor old fellow has clung to the adage that "age & cunning will always defeat youth & skill". Last week's overwhelming vote for Ilona shattered his faith! But, in his kindly avuncular manner, he handed to her the minutes of his spectacular fine session of 5 June. Therefore your M@A is thrown back on memory alone! And what he remembers (or thinks he remembers) is: Bill Little & Bob Bruce are government apparatchiks spying on Rotary and have been rewarded for that! President Tom has been indicted for abusing his entertainment allowance to take Grace to Luna Park! Paul Ward-Harvey has been revealed as a people smuggler who brings young people to Australia to be trained as Wiggles and sent abroad! Ilona herself is a secret agent, like Mata Hari, engaged to secure land rights for gay whales! Now, in the twilight of your M@A's career --- if you believe that you will believe anything. Believe in Ilona, one of our star exchange students! GUEST SPEAKER, GUESTS & VISITORS: JUNE 5 by David Goodliffe Guest Speaker Susannah Fullerton told us about her new book, Brief Encounters: Literary travellers in Australia in which she tells the fascinating stories of famous writers who came to this country, revealing what they thought of us and what we thought of them, what they saw and did and how the visit influenced their future writing. Darwin, Trollope, Conrad, Kipling, Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, DH Lawrence and HG Wells are just some of the visitors included in the book.
