He called me stupid and hung up the phone. Other callers came to my defense and confirmed that there were only two types of holidays, Federal and State holidays. Although many most people consider the Federal holidays as national holidays. A federal holiday means that federal employees get the day off with pay. A state holiday means that state employees get the day off with pay. Businesses can decide which, if any, holidays their company will celebrate. And while most of the states have some celebration for Martin Luther King, Jr., they are not all paid holidays. In Texas it is an alternative holiday. That means that State employees may take the day off with pay, but must work on one of the other approved state holidays. Each state make up their own rules. I am happy to say that our disagreement did not affect the celebration. Austinites have a long history of celebrating this day and did so again on Monday. There was an estimated crowd of 15,000 in the march from the State Capitol to Huston Tillotson University in East Austin for the community festival. It was quite inspiring to see how the youth have become involved with the celebration. They were involved in all aspects of the observance. Hats off to the Austin Area Heritage Council for their continued commitment to making the Austin celebration on of the largest in the state. They lost some of their sponsors this year, but moved forward in spite of the loss. Let s hope that they can attract new sponsors nest year in order that they may continue to promote this much needed event. The Texans had many opportunities in the game against the Baltimore Ravens, but they just made too many mistakes to advance losing to the Ravens. The Texans had four turnovers in the game, three of which lead directly to 17 of the Ravens 20 points. Jacoby Jones fumble punt return was recovered by the Ravens on the Texans two yard line. The Ravens would erase the early Texan lead when Joe Flacco would hit tight end Kris Wilson for a one yard touchdown to take a 7-3 advantage. Arian Foster would run for 132 yards and score a touchdown on a one yard run. Rookie JJ Watts would be a fixture in the Ravens backfield harassing Flacco. Watts would finish with 9 unassisted tackles and 2.5 quarterback sacks for the Texans. Brooks Reed would also have 2.5 sacks on the day. Kubiak on the Texans defense, They kept us in it. We played hard, I m proud of our effort. We just didn t play well enough to move on. The upside of having all of the injuries for the Texans this year is, that the injuries allowed more players the opportunity to gain valuable playing experience and will be able to contribute next year. The downside of everyone playing means other teams will try to raid your roster in order to improve their team. The future looks good for the Texans. If management is able to keep the core of the team together and if the Texans do not have another injury plagued year again, they will be able to compete for not only a playoff spot next year, but for a berth in the Super Bowl.

At 9 am I joined more than 15,000 others in honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by marching from UT, to the State Capitol, to Huston- Tillotson University. My walk was in remembrance of the great civil rights marches, from Selma to Montgomery to the March on Washington, and pay tribute to the sacrifices, both physical and emotional, that it took to end Jim Crow laws, guarantee the right to vote, and stand up for the dignity and worth of every American. It was in celebration of how far we ve come. As the daughter of a maid, and the granddaughter of a maid, I m now an accountant and an attorney whose eldest son has his pick of colleges. And I walked to see more clearly the lines that divide us and the work we have yet to do. Crossing the cultural divide of I-35 it s hard to ignore the reality that we don t educate all our children equally and prepare them to participate fully in an ever more competitive economy. And that for too many African American youth, a police officer is the first authority figure they meet. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is both a day of How far are you willing to Walk? Sheryl Cole remembrance and a call to action. So today I m calling on all my friends - black, white, Hispanic, Asian - to join with social service agencies, the faith based community, advocacy groups, the education community and neighborhoods to take just a few steps outside of your comfort zone to help bring our community closer together. I m constantly asked for names of African Americans to serve on boards of organizations serving Austin s needy, including African American youth and our elderly. In part they ask because there are just not enough volunteers to do the work that must be done to make our communities stronger. In part many organizations ask because their social and business networks don t intersect with the many African Americans working to improve our community. At the same time, many African American organizations can get overwhelmed in their responsibilities that they too fail to reach out. As Dr. King cautioned: The question we must ask is not what will happen to me if I stop to help this man? But, what will happen to this man if I do not help? What will happen to the sick if I do not visit them? What will happen to my city if I do not vote? What will happen to the civil rights movement? What will happen to humanity? If you would like to serve on a non-profit board, or volunteer in any capacity, or would like to explore how you can increase diversity in your organization, I invite you to contact me at Sheryl@sherylforaustin.com We must not forget that we did not overcome the indignity of slavery and Jim Crow alone. The cry for Civil Rights led by Dr. King rang around the world just as it did for Ghandi, Nelson Mandela and others. How close we come to fulfilling Dr. King s dream depends on how far each of us is willing to walk. Onward, Sheryl Cole Place 6 Austin City Council

West Memorial Scholarship Fund The University of North Texas at Dallas has announced a $100,000 gift from an anonymous donor to establish the Remarcus L. West Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of Texas State Senator, Royce West s late son, Remarcus, who recently passed away after a prolonged illness. Remarcus West graduated from Duncanville High School in 1997 and attended the University of North Texas and Prairie View A&M University. He is remembered as a talented coalition builder among his peers. He was a person who would often bring people with multiple, even opposing interests together, said his father. Remarcus had hopes to continue his education by studying photography in New York, but his illness prevented him from achieving that goal. He would always take one step forward with his education and then two steps back when he would get sick, said Senator West, He knew what it was like to Remarcus L. West have to overcome obstacles to complete his education and so creating a fund that will help others surmount barriers to their dreams is a significant way to honor him. We are all very saddened to learn of Remarcus passing. My heart goes out to his family and friends, said Dr. John Ellis Price, president of UNT at Dallas. We are privileged to be able to create this memorial fund in Remarcus name, and deeply appreciative of the anonymous donor s generous lead gift. With the Remarcus L. West Memorial Scholarship Fund, we can help students attain the educational goals that were a challenge for him, and continue his legacy by teaching others the art of building coalitions. We hope that the lead gift to endow this Scholarship Fund at the University of North Texas at Dallas in memory of Remarcus will encourage others to contribute, said Douglas Smith, vice president for university advancement of UNT at Dallas. Providing educational opportunities for the young people of greater Dallas, Best Southwest Cities and the North Texas region is of paramount importance to the West family, and a most fitting tribute to Remarcus. In working jointly with state and local officials to establish UNT at Dallas, Senator West is credited with being the driving force in bringing the first and only four-year state university to the City of Dallas. Legislation was passed in 2001 which called for the creation of the new Dallas university, and the first building was completed in Donations to the scholarship fund may be made by check and mailed to the University of North Texas at Dallas, Office of University Advancement, Attn: Remarcus L. 4 THE VILLAGER Page 4 ~ January 20, 2012 YOUTH BRIGADE Youth of Today The MLK Youth Legacy Awards Will Purcell New Manor Tech HS Saturday, January 14 was the annual MLK Youth Legacy Awards. Young kids are nominated based on the following categories: Arts, Academic Excellence, Community Service, Math & Science, Fred Mitchie Mitchell, Spirit Award, Youth Humanitarian, and Youth Leadership. I was nominated for Community Service. I was also the only person to be nominated twice. There were two companies that each held categories. One was the Applied Materials Foundation and the other was the Seton Healthcare Family. In each category the presenter would call up the nominees. A second prize winner would be announced first and then the first prize winner would be announced. Second and first place received a plaque while the first place winner also received $1000 scholarship to spend on college. The first place winner would also have their biography read to the audience about their life and achievements. I was very nervous about the whole thing. When I got on stage all I did was bow my head and close my eyes. When second place was called I felt a little relieved. When the announcer was about to call out the Community Service scholarship winner, I tried taking a peek at what the envelope said. When the host first said William, I immediately started to grin in complete excitement. That s when I realized I had won the scholarship!! Everybody including my family were just cheering and clapping for me. I felt so good at that moment. When I sat down, I was shaking in joy. Then after a while I was called to the stage again for my second nomination. It was just me and another nominee. I received second place for that nomination. Overall though, I was mainly focused on my first place win. This will always be a big memory in my life. He fought for the equality of everyone. He made powerful speeches that taught peace and non-vilonce. If you procrastinate you will miss out on a lot of opportunities. You might miss out on scholarships. So,it is really important you take care of this as early as possible. fied for the playoffs great job ladies. Go Raiders! The Delany sisters memories include their associations and friendships with Mr. Booker T. Washington, Eleanor Roosevelt, Paul Robeson, Dr. W.E.B. Dubois Inaccurate In scription on MLK Memorial to be Corrected Special to the NNPA from the Afro-American Newspaper An inaccurate inscription etched into the Martin Luther King memorial in Washington D.C. will be changed to provide the correct context of a quote by the civil rights leader. The Washington Post first reported Jan. 13 that Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar had ordered the quote changed. According to the Associated Press, the side of the granite memorial currently bears the inscription I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness, taken from a February 1968 sermon known as the Drum Major Instinct, made just two months before King s assassination. However, King s original words made him seem more modest: Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter. The altered quote has drawn criticism since the memorial s opening in October, including from poet Maya Angelou, who according to the AP said the inscribed version makes King sound like an arrogant twit. Salazar said he has ordered the National Park Service to consult the memorial s organizing foundation and the King family, and report back within 30 days with a plan to correct the memorial. This is important because Dr. King and his presence on the Mall is a forever presence for the United States of America, and we have to make sure that we get it right, Salazar told the Post. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is seen in Washington, on Sunday, Jan. 15, and many others who too left their ownindelibly positive mark on the history of our nation and the world. Having Our Say, The Delany Sisters First One Hundred Years, is the Delanys story and America s history in their own words from their unique and candid perspective, and yet thestory touches the universal elements of the human experience. I am so grateful for God s grace to answer and fulfill the vision of bringing these dynamic voices to the Austin stage City of Austin Housing Reagan High School to Host next AAMB Conference Saturday January 28th, 2012 Conference, is one you won t want to miss! 8 THE VILLAGER Page 8 ~ January 20, 2012 By: Terry The last week was not one o remember for the basketball eams at Huston-Tillotson. All ames were played in the ranch Gymnasium, but the ome cooking would not mater in these games. Women s Basketball The women s team would ace the Lady of the Lakes Uniersity Saints. The Saints ould come into the game with nly one loss in the Red River thletic Conference (RRAC). he Saints record would imrove after a victory over he Rams. In the first half of the ame with the Saints, the game ould go back and forth until he Rams would build a seven oint lead at with 10:13 eft in the first half. The Saints ould battle back to take a 36-4 lead to the half. The second half would be lose for the entire game. The argest lead by either team ould be four on several occaions by both teams. The Rams ad many opportunities to tretch the lead to over a four oint margin, but had too many mpty trips, turnovers or issed free throws. The Rams only made 13 f 21 free throw attempts on the ight and had 32 turnovers in Huston-Tillotson Roundup Lance Richardson #23 and Ronzelle Fort #35 talk defense. Photo by Terry Davis. the game. The Rams were led Kandice Smith with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Jasmine Dukes had 18 points to help in the efforts. The second game of the week was against the first place and undefeated Langston Lions. The Lions would use a suffocating full court press to force turnovers and get the Lady Rams out of rhythm all night long. The Lions would defeat the Rams The Lions (17-0, 11-0 RRAC) had three players with 15 or more points. The Rams only had two players with 10 points Kevetta Williams and Kandice Smith and one with 11 points Erica Cray. The Rams would never lead in the game or tie the game. Men s Basketball The men s team would face a one loss Saints team and would not fall victim to a huge deficit to start the game. The team would play one of their better games of the season. The Rams would give the Saints all they could handle for the first 8 minutes of the second half. SPORTS Then the Rams just ran out of gas and lost by the final margin of Lance Richardson had 20 points and 13 rebounds and Charles Jones would finish with 22 points. The game against the Lions from Langston was an entertaining game all the way to the finish. The score at the half was in favor of the Lions. The Lions would extend its lead to with 15 minutes to play. The rams would not quit. The Rams would go on a 12-0 to make the score with 12:06 left. The game would be close for the remainder of the game. The Rams (0-16, 0-12 RRAC) would cut the lead to one point with 3.5 seconds left, but could not convert. The final score was Langston (5-11, 5-6 RRAC). The Rams had 5 players in double figures scoring lead by Justin King with 21 points. Both teams return to Branch Gym to play Saint Thomas University on January 28. The women s game will begin at 5:30 pm and the men s game will begin at 7:30 pm The San Antonio Spurs may not be getting the National spotlight like the Los Angeles Clippers or the Miami Heat, but the Spurs are taking care of business at home. The Spurs are 8-0 at home this year after wins over the Portland Trailblazers and the Phoenix Suns last week. The Spurs defeated the Trailblazers and pulled away late from the Suns In the Portland game, the win was triggered by an unlikely player Tiago Splitter. Splitter would score 9 of his 14 points in the third quarter. Tony Parker had only 4 points at halftime, but would score 16 points in second half to get the Spurs on track. The Spurs would go on a 14-2 run to start the fourth quarter and pull away from the Trailblazers on the night and the Trailblazers would not be able to recover from that run. The run was aided by the lack of defensive stopper Marcus Camby not being in the game. Camby left the game late in the second quarter with a left ankle injury. Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich on Camby s absence, He is a tough nut to crack down there. He is really good. He had a couple of blocks before he got hurt and it certainly does changes things on the boards for them and defensively. VILLAGER SPOTLIGHT Spurs: Home Sweet Home Tim Duncan #21 blocks Gerald Wallace shot attempt. Former Texas Longhorn, LaMarcus Aldridge, would do his best to keep the Blazers in contention most of the night. Aldridge would lead all scorers with 29 points. Aldridge said, It was a tough loss. We had control of both half s and then we just let it slip away. Rookie guard and former Longhorn Corey Joseph saw limited action in the Portland game, but would play nearly 13 minutes in the Suns game. Joseph spent the last two week with the Austin Toros in order to gain some playing time and hone his game. In the game against the Suns, the Spurs would use the usual suspects to defeat the Suns, future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan were score 24 points and 11 rebounds and Parker would chip 17 points and 9 assists on the night. Duncan would move into 26 th place for alltime scoring in the NBA passing Gary Payton. This may be Popovich best coaching job with the Spurs. The compact scheduling requires Popovich and the rest of the coaching staff to manage the minutes of Duncan and Parker because of age and prior injuries. The team is thin at the guard position because of injuries to Manu Ginobili and former Longhorn TJ Ford. The Spurs have four players that have 9 or more years of experience in the NBA and 8 players with 2 or fewer years in NBA experience. The coaching staff has the blend the veteran players with the younger players to maintain the flow of the offense on a nightly basis. The Spurs will return to the ATT Center on Friday January 20 to face the Sacramento Kings at 7:30 pm CST and will attempt to remain perfect at home.
