Asher Staff Writer For the last few years, Kentucky law enforcement has been using E-Warrants, an electronic warrant system that has modernized the process of obtaining and serving warrants in the state. The E-warrant system pulls all active warrants in Kentucky, allowing law enforcement instant access to active warrants whenever they run a name through the system. Trooper Brad Arterburn, Public Affairs Officer for KSP Post 5 in Campbellsburg, noted the E-warrant system is intend- ed to eliminate the paper warrant system. The paper warrant system created a lot of problems, said Arterburn. If somebody in Campbellsburg needed to get a warrant on somebody that was in Harlan, we d have to call down there and have somebody physically go to the courthouse and find that warrant, (then) fax it up here and get it to us. With the E-warrant system this is not a problem, noted Arterburn. If somebody in Mayfield needs to find a warrant on somebody in Pikeville, they can get on the E-warrant system, pull it up and have a copy of the warrant on hand within seconds, said Arterburn. Harlan Police Chief Mike Thomas said the E-warrant system provides more up to date information than the old system. With the old Courtnet system, it might show a warrant but it s possibly not up to date, said Thomas. You d have to wait for 45 minutes or an hour to see if it was a valid warrant. According to Arterburn, the E-warrant system will show any active warrants. If there is an active war- rant, say they got a ticket in Paducah and they were from Harlan and never went back to pay it those warrants are going to stay active until either they are served or the judge pulls them for some reason, said Arterburn. It could be a warrant from 10 years ago, it s still going to be in the system. Arterburn said that if an active warrant shows up, troopers have no choice other than to serve the warrant. If there s a warrant on that person, it says that we shall arrest. Achieving the rank of sergeant, Layne, a resident of Cumberland, retired from the KSP recently and will begin his job at SKCTC at the onset of the spring semester. The classroom setting is familiar with Layne as he has worked as an adjunct faculty member for the college over the past 15 years. Upon his retirement from the state agency, he noted how excited he is about the new position as he works to prepare students for careers in the criminal justice field. Jones recalled one incident, while working the third shift when the office was on Clover Street, when a woman ran into the office saying her husband was trying to kill her with a screwdriver. By the time she got to the window, sure enough her husband came in right behind her with a big screwdriver, said Jones. I got her separated in a room and him in another one then I called for some help. I talked pretty stiff to him and got him settled down before my help came. It was a pretty trying incident. Jones said he really enjoys his job, noting he has met some wonderful people throughout the years through his position. I ve worked under five police chiefs and two mayors, said Jones. Marcella Chadwick says Sequoia Energy had wanted to move about 80 horses because they were eating vegetation that was planted as part of the company s federally-mandated reclamation of the surface mine site. Coal com- panies in most cases are required to restore vegetation on former surface mines. Chadwick says an attorney she enlisted to communicate with Sequoia told her that it has dropped the effort to move the horses. A person who answered the phone at the office of Sequoia s parent company, Southern Coal Corp. in Roanoke, Va., said no one would be available Friday to comment. KSP probes Knox shooting death Staff Report Kentucky State Police are investigating a shooting death that occurred in Knox County on Thursday. According to a press release, KSP Post 10 in Harlan received a call from Knox County 911 requesting KSP at the scene of a shooting in the Walker community. Once on the scene, Jessie and Angela Jaynes advised KSP they had found James W. Cox at their residence when they arrived home. Upon finding Cox at his residence, Jessie Jaynes and Cox were involved in an altercation in which Cox was fatally shot. Knox County Coroner Mike Blevins pronounced Cox dead at the scene. There had been no arrests Friday afternoon. The incident is under investigation by Det. Mark Mefford. Mefford was assisted at the scene by troopers Brian Maupin, George Howard, Russell Maynard, Det. Jason York and Sgt. Jason Bunch. Middlesboro gets first ever yogurt shop Reina Parker Cunningham Middlesboro Daily Tasty Time Frozen Yogurt opened in Middlesboro on Dec. 11, with a score of 100 percent on their regular inspection. Tasty Time is a selfserve yogurt shop featuring 10 different flavors of nonfat frozen yogurt and over 30 toppings. Tasty Time is the only self-serve frozen yogurt shop in Middlesboro and, according to the Chamber of Commerce, the only known yogurt shop ever to be opened in Middlesboro. Owner Jolin Li invites customers to come in and sample the various flavors to decide which one they like the best. Li likes to allow customers to sample the yogurt to ensure they are satisfied with their purchase. Customers can mix and match from the 10 different flavors of nonfat frozen yogurt to create their own unique treat. Currently, featured flavors include wild strawberry, New York cheesecake, dark chocolate, peanut butter, orange, birthday cake, vanilla, cookies-in-cream, pumpkin pie and sea salt pretzel. So far, birthday cake has been the most popular flavor, said Li. Once the customer has chosen their flavor(s), they can choose from over thirty toppings to finish off their cup. Toppings include jelly beans, rainbow sprinkles, and numerous types of chocolate pieces. The price for the yogurt and toppings is 45 cents per ounce. Once the customer is finished creating their treat, they bring it to the cashier to be weighed and priced. Once customers pay for their treat, they can sit down at one of the modern couches or tables and enjoy themselves while using the shop s free Wi-Fi. Although Tasty Time has only been open for a couple of weeks, they already have some regular customers. Li said the shop has been popular with families who like to come in for dessert after supper and college kids like to come in later at night. Robbyn Baker of Pike, Ga., was in town visiting family for the holidays when they all decided to come in Thursday afternoon for a treat. Baker s family had already enjoyed Tasty Time and wanted her to come try it as well. In addition to self-serve frozen yogurt, Tasty Time also offers espresso, coffee and hot tea. This is the second Tasty Time Li has opened. She opened her first store approximately six months ago in Lexington. Tasty Time Frozen Yogurt is located at 300 North 12th Street, Suite 2, between Aaron s and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. 3 Saturday, December 29, 2012 Page 3 Harlan Daily Enterprise Obituaries Milford Swanner Jr. Milford Swanner, Jr., 55, of Ages, entered Eternal Rest on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 following a battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 27, 1957 in Pineville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Before his illness, he served as an administrative assistant for Wiseman Ministries in Longview, Texas. He was preceded in death by his father, Milford Swanner, Sr Survivors include his daughter, Misty; his mother, Polly; sisters, Brenda and Kim; and brothers, Larry, Garry, Terry, Tommy and Ricky. In his job at Southeast, Layne, who came to the area in 1976, will build the program to emphasize police patrol operations as well as offering course work in the supervision of police personnel and more. However, the primary goal will be to administer and develop a local program that is of interest to students, lending guidance in order for them to move into a fouryear program as offered by Eastern Kentucky University and possibly, soon to be offered by the University of Pikeville, he said. The newspaper and WKYT-TV report that Vanderpool was arrested on Dec. 5 for driving on a suspended license and officials added a longer suspension. Court records show that before the arrest, his license had been suspended when he didn t answer a court summons from Whitley County, where he lived. Whitley 2012 at the Doctors Hospice of Georgia in Fayetteville, Georgia. She was 92 years, 6 months, and 18 days of age. She was born on June 9, 1920 in Whitley County, Kentucky to the late Kay Hinkle and Clara Mae Steel Hinkle. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Francis M. Stanaford; granddaughters, Teresa Jean (Mize) Hood and Linda Lee Stanaford; great grandsons, Christopher Adam Ellis and Matthew Ryan Koehrsen. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Corbin, Kentucky and a former member of the Loyall Baptist Church. She was also the former owner and operator of Loyall Corner Store, the Martin Street Store in Harlan, Kentucky, and the Turners Grocery Store in Harlan, Kentucky. She lived in Lakeland Florida in the winter months and Corbin, Kentucky in the summer. After the death of her husband, Francis she moved to Newman, Georgia to live with her daughter, Margie Bennett. She is survived by her daughter, Margie Bennett of Newnan, Georgia; one son, Otis Lee Stanaford and his wife Gladys G. Mincey of Knoxville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Deborah Stanaford Staley and longtime partner James Kucharsky, Sharon Stanaford Fields and husband Robert, Frances Stanaford Koehrsen and husband Erich, Kimberly Beth (Mize) Hose, and Jeri Jane (Mize) Maddox and husband Edward Joseph; thirteen great grandchildren; nine greatgreat grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her passing. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. until the funeral hour on Monday, December 31, 2012 at the Croley Funeral Home Chapel. from Cumberland High School. He credits Dr. W. Bruce Ayers, the current SKCTC president, who, at the time of Layne s enrollment at the college, was a faculty member and adviser. Dr. Ayers knew how much I wanted to become a policeman. He directed me down that path guiding me toward an associate s degree at Southeast and then helping prepare me for my transfer to Eastern for the bachelor s degree. Currently, Layne is working on a master s degree in the discipline. He is the son of a Methodist minister, the late Harold K. Layne. His mother is Judy Layne, a former college employee, who now resides in Tennessee. Layne and his wife, Lisa, have been married for 23 years and are the parents of daughters Ally, a student at Southeast, and Sydney, a student at Cumberland Elementary School. He is survived by his two daughters, Melissa Kemplin and Rachel Surber, both of Murfreesboro, TN; two grandchildren, Logan and Dalton Surber of Partridge, KY; three brothers and 4 sisters; and a host of family and friends. Lula Sundy Lynch Community and Civic Leader Lula Doris Sundy died of respiratory cardiac complications Thursday, December 27, 2012 at the Harlan ARH hospital. Mrs. Sundy was 95. She was born millennium, it will rely heavily on course work in areas of police patrol and supervision. And, as a certified Kentucky Law Enforcement Counsel instructor, Layne will be positioned to take an active role in the retraining of local officers, which is mandatory for those working within the field. The program Layne directs at SKCTC is constructed to lead students to an associate in applied science in areas of corrections, law enforcement, criminal justice and security loss prevention. One of my main goals is to get out and recruit students who are keenly interested in law enforcement, he said. I want to be able to speak with them, to meet them and tell them all about the criminal justice program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College. He also touted the merits of having employment within the field. A career in law enforcement provides County Commonwealth s Attorney Alan Trimble said that summons was for a previous citation for no operator s license and no insurance. Girl reported missing found on campus LEXINGTON (AP) University of Kentucky police have found a child they say was reported missing in California more than two months ago. Steve Beshear and Attorney General Jack Conway have the right words to say when it comes to the state s scourge of prescription-drug addiction. The Governor has called it a corrosive evil. And Conway recently told Courier-Journal reporter Laura Ungar, in the sixth and latest installment of a two-year series, Prescription for Tragedy, that We absolutely do not have the treatment we need. Not even close. Both officials worked with the Kentucky General Assembly to pass legislation to close so-called pillmills. And the governor s spokeswoman, Kerri Richardson, insists that the Beshear administration has sought to maintain funding for substance abuse, despite cuts of up to 40 percent at other state agencies during a tough economy. The pain of Ungar s latest findings is that all too often, when people ask for help, they can t get it. As five-year addict Rachelle Autry, a 30-year-old mother of three, said, I almost died waiting for treatment. I couldn t stay clean. She eventually got into The Healing Place, after a 21/2-month wait. Others aren t as fortunate. Annual deaths blamed on prescription drug abuse in Kentucky now reaches nearly 1,000, a number that outpaces traffic fatalities. Kentucky has so many health, welfare and environmental problems, and state government has correspondingly so few resources, that it might be easy to throw one s hands up in despair. But a state task force has been studying ways to modernize Kentucky s tax structure to generate more revenue for a cash-starved budget and it has emerged with the recommendations would raise about $690 million. It won t be enough to solve all our problems. Money never is. But as The Courier-Journal has editorialized before, the task force nonetheless has produced some ideas that, if enacted, could at least steer the state toward solvency. If nothing else, the Prescription for Tragedy series has shown why tax reform is necessary and why it should be taken seriously in Frankfort this winter. This is also an all-hands-on deck moment for all segments of Kentucky society, from government to religious institutions to the nonprofit sector, to schools and to families. We know what to do. We just need to muscle a way to make it happen. At times we think it s cheaper to take the option of the drive through with no mess to clean up. Plus, family members can get whatever they like from the menu. Thanksgiving last month meant a trip to my husband s family event and later to the Cracker Barrel with six of my family members. Thanksgiving Facebook postings showed some of my friends had decorated their dining room to the hilt with their best dishes and flatware. The food looked as if it could have been photographed for an upcoming Betty Crocker cookbook. I posted a few words about my satisfying experience at the Cracker Barrel where I enjoyed a turkey sandwich on rye and ice tea All the recent attention to food in magazines, newspapers and on television shows had me reminiscing last night about my failures as a cook. My mother, Opal Adams Bowling, a good cook who learned her culinary skills at Benham High School, Editor, My husband, Wade McCorkle, and I bought the Flipping Santa in Atlanta, Ga. at the furniture market in the 1970s. He was in our Star Furniture store window for several years and enjoyed by generations of Harlan Countians. So many people wanted to buy him when we closed out our store, plus our children and grandchildren wanted it. Wade would not sell, but donated it to a Harlan businesswoman with the understanding that he would be kept in window of downtown businesses. We are sad that his wishes were not honored. Patricia McCorkle Naples, Fla. Editor, I am a firm believer in the capitalist system. It has enabled a broad range of the population to share in the wealth of our country. However, what happened the weekend preceding this Christmas really infuriated me. The local top seller of gasoline elevated their gas prices by 8 cents on Friday and another 8 cents on Saturday. This made their price be $3.34 a gallon. Meanwhile in Middlesboro, gas prices were $2.96 to $2.99 a gallon. In Corbin, the gas prices were $2.92 to $3.09 gallon. What this clearly shows is that unbridled greed brings out the Grinch in people, even at Christmas. I long to see more competition (more gas outlets) come to Harlan County. We don t deserve being ripped off when we buy our gas. Mathias Williams Evarts Editor, At one time I was a resident of Harlan, but in 2000 I moved out of state to start my life elsewhere. In 1996, while I was a teenager in high school, my father submitted a Social Security Disability claim, and as his minor child, I too submitted a claim for benefits. After numerous appeals and three years of the typical red tape, he was finally awarded Social And then Dr. Vivian Blevins Letters to the Editor: never taught her children to cook, or wash clothes or dishes or clean house. She always said, I will not rob my children of their childhood. She certainly never robbed me of my childhood, and I was never prepared for any work in the kitchen when I married at age 20. I ll give you a few examples of my cooking disasters, and they ll bring a smile or a smirk to your face if you are a competent cook: I fried liver, including the skirt that soaks up the blood, and served it proudly as I touted the nutritional values of this organ meat; My first attempts at fried chicken resulted in pieces that were a beautiful golden brown on the outside with blood dripping once my guests took the first bite; I made the world s worst spaghetti with ketchup and cheap frozen hamburger for my sister one summer at Eastern Kentucky University; Bragging about my Appalachian roots to a college art professor, I cooked pinto beans in a cheap pot and burned everything up, including the pot; I made a pecan pie that my father-in-law, Roy Blevins, said, This is good, Vivian, if I could only cut the crust. And then I got pregnant, and was not allowed to continue teaching (Yes, ignorant people at that time thought I would be a bad influence on my high school students). I was bored being at home by myself all day, so I asked my mother to send me a cookbook, and she did. It was called the Household Searchlight Recipe Book and was published in The book was a magic Security benefits and a lump sum for the time between 1996 and I too received a lump sum my total amount came to around $25,000, but because of my father drawing workman s compensation, roughly $12,500 was deducted from my check. Since I was no longer a minor child, I was no longer eligible for any further benefits either. All the same, my mother and I were living well below the poverty line, so this money came in handy at the time. I bought a very modest car (a $700 beat up Ford) and paid the high car insurance bills along with it. Since we did not have medical insurance, I had to pay some expensive medical bills out of pocket too. I used this money to pay other bills too while I was a full-time student in vocational school. Finally, I used my last bit of money to move to Tennessee in order to find a job. That was the end of the matter regarding my lump sum payment. Until about six months ago. To start, the SSA sent their letter regarding the matter to the wrong address! I have lived at no less than six different addresses in two different states since I moved out of my mother s house in However, the Social Security Administration sent a correspondence to her house. This was during a very difficult time in her life, so she was not immediately able to forward the letter to me, but then again, should she have had to? I have worked and filed tax returns at every address where I have lived since 2000, not to mention the several times I obtained driver s licenses and registered vehicles in the states where I have lived. I have put in forwarding addresses with the post office each time I moved, and while applicable, I have re-registered with Selective Services. Long story short, I have not been living under the radar, so it is a mystery to me why the Social Security Administration did not know of my present whereabouts in order to send me a letter at my present home address. Any other federal agency would have known exactly where to find me, but I digress. Once I finally had the letter in my hands, it simply stated that they had paid me a $12,500 lump sum, but they should have only paid me around $4,400. So, I now owed them over $7,000. This simplistic mathematical statement devoid of any supporting details was their idea of an explanation for why I owed them money. Half of my lump sum was already taken because of the workman s comp benefits my father received (and was completely forthcoming about). Now, over 13 years later, they want over $7,000 more. Apparently, my father and I are not the only ones this has happened to. Rumor has it that a similar letter has gone out to SSA recipients all over Harlan County demanding the repayment of alleged SSA over payments. Is someone in the SSA trying to get a bonus or something? My reaction was one of complete disbelief and boiling hot anger. Never mind the fact that they sent the letter to a place where I have not lived since Never mind that before I even laid eyes on the letter, they had already setup payment arrangements, and when they had not received a payment, they were already threatening to seize my tax returns. (By the way, I will owe money on my taxes this year, so have fun getting blood from a turnip.) The four things that really bug me are: 1) We were glimpse into the world of genuine cooking with no reference to cooking ingredients such as Cool Whip, miniature marshmallows or Lipton soup mix. Everything was from scratch, and there were even instructions on how to kill, dress and fry a chicken. Now, I ve never killed a chicken, but I followed the instructions for many of the recipes in that book and taught myself to cook. Big Time! My husband, Jack, went from 130 pounds to 160 in about four months. As I moved ahead with being a mother, a wife and an educator, I soon stopped making yeast rolls and cakes from those recipes. I cooked so infrequently that my sons always thanked me when I did cook (My grandson, Jack Tyler, now does the same). Today I want to thank Mrs. Buttermore and Mrs. Jones at Harlan High School for teaching my sons, Lance and Quentin, to cook. They are great cooks, thanks to these wonderful teachers, much better than I ever dreamed of or even wanted to be. completely forthcoming with our application, and if there was a mistake, it was made by the SSA. 2) The SSA has yet to show proof of their claim that they overpaid me. Simply stating that I owe them money is not an explanation. 3) In addition to being very dodgy about the details of the debt, they are throwing their weight around as a federal agency in order to intimidate people into paying them without a fight. This is a similar methodology used by the mafia in racketeering schemes. 4) This was from 13 years ago! Did you know that the statute of limitations for federal tax fraud is seven years? This is why the IRS only audits back for seven years. Most other federal crimes, (except the most heinous) have a limitation of five years. The reason that statutes of limitations were put in place is because it would be unfair to expect someone to defend themselves against charges after so much time had passed, details had been forgotten, and evidence had been lost. Applying that principal to this situation, it is completely unfair for the Social Security Administration to come after someone for an alleged over payment so far after the event took place. I am now scrambling to get old paperwork together and remember details from a decade and a half ago in order to mount some sort of defense against this ridiculous over-payment claim. However, since much of the paperwork has been lost and most of the memories have faded, this will be difficult. I hope the SSA will understand if I do not s imply take their word for it when they tell me I owe them money. Up until now, they have not demonstrated an extremely high level of competence in their handling of this situation. Indeed, I have no intention of going down without a long and hard fight! To quote the Apostle Paul, I appeal to Caesar! If you have received a similar letter from the Social Security Administration, I would encourage you to exhaust every appeal and take it before a federal judge if you must. I plan to do so, and until a federal judge rules to the contrary, I have no intent of paying a red cent to the SSA. If they want to steal $7,500 from me by means of racketeering and crony intimidation, I am at least going to make them work for it. William Hall Pennsylvania

5 Saturday, December 29, 2012 You and Yours Page 5 Harlan Daily Enterprise Taking time for Christmas baking Early on this Christmas Eve, just after the drizzling, foggy, rebel-gray, sort-of, daybreak announced itself, I hobbled out of bed and wobbled to the kitchen to put on a pot of coffee and to check out the big Bundt cake pan I had put to use just after midnight or early Monday morning. The pan contained the now-cooled fruitcake that I had struggled with for more than three hours the night before, and then popped into the oven in the wee-est hour of this day. I simply can t stand it when Loretta looks over my shoulder and offers not-so-helpful hints when I am baking and sort of making it up as I go along. (You re not really going to put wine in that? Points East Ike Adams Baking powder in selfrising flour? That many eggs? Does anybody really like nutmeg? Cream of tartar? You re kidding, right? And so forth. So the way I avoid unneeded and, most certainly unsolicited advice, when I want to be creative in the kitchen, is to wait until my wife is sound asleep and down for the count for the night. Last night, after 24 non-stop hours of making and reeking of black-walnut fudge, and country ham and spicy cookies, she finally started snoring to the tune of White Christmas, with visions of sugar plums dancing on her brow. Finally with the cat curled up and purring and gently kneading on her toes Loretta shut down just before the nightly news came on Channel 18. When Loretta sleeps through this guy she has a not-so-secret crush on named Bill s weather forecast, I know she s out of it and not apt to wake up for several hours. So EKCEP s Whitehead receives top honor from SKCTC Special to the Enterprise Jeff Whitehead, executive director of Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program (EKCEP), has been named the recipient of the highest service award given to an individual by one of the region s 16 colleges in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). Dr. W. Bruce Ayers, president of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC), honored Whitehead with the President s Service Award during the college s fall/ winter commencement, held Dec. 7 in the Godbey Appalachian Center on the SKCTC Cumberland Campus. The honor is the highest award offered by the college and is given to those who work tirelessly to make the region and its people successes. Whitehead is executive director of EKCEP and its Local Workforce Investment Board (WIB), which provide workforce and employer services to 23 rural Appalachian counties in Eastern Kentucky. Whitehead has led various aspects of operations at EKCEP for more than 22 years, including the last five as executive director. In times of surging unemployment rates and shrinking budgets, Whitehead is working to ensure EKCEP becomes more relevant than ever to job seekers and employers across its service area by being nimble, creative, and responsive in its approach to delivering its array of services, which operate under the mission of jobs for people people for jobs. To build this relevance, Whitehead and EKCEP are embracing new partnerships and service strategies that better align workforce development with the needs of the region s employers needs by addressing recognized skills gaps with targeted, customized training. By doing so, Whitehead believes workforce development can prove itself an invaluable catalyst toward local and regional economic development. A 15-point Harlan County lead evaporated in the fourth quarter before sophomore Bella Noe came to the rescue. With the Lady Bears trailing by three, Noe had all seven of Harlan County s points in the final two minutes to lift her team to a win. After a trey from Bethany Edwards gave the Lady Jumpers a lead with 2:20 remaining, Noe answered with a 3-pointer on the opposite end to pull the Lady Bears even. Noe then hit a one-handed runner in the lane to put Harlan County on top with just seven seconds left. Following a turnover on the ensuing possession, Noe calmly drained a pair of free throws to ice the game. The Lady Dragons turned a seven-point deficit into a three-point lead with an impressive third quarter, but the lady Cards pulled away in the fourth for a win. South went inside to Taylor Arthur early in the first quarter. The senior center had her team s first five points to put the Lady Cards up 5-2. Harlan s Jourdan Ledford put the Lady Dragons on top with an old-fashioned threepoint play with 3:11. Both teams struggled to score in the opening period, and the score remained there until South s Brittany Vandeventer banked in a 3-pointer from half-court at the buzzer to put South up by two. Harlan s offensive woes continued in the second quarter. The Lady Dragons were just 1-for-11 from the field and turned the ball over the ball over nine times in the period. Harlan s only field goal came early as Ledford grabbed a rebound and hit a layup while getting fouled. Ledford hit the free throw to tie the game at nine. South began to pull away from that point. The No. 4 Cardinals have dropped four in a row to the Wildcats, including last spring s national semifinal in New Orleans. Kentucky won that game and went on to beat Kansas two days later for its eighth national championship. That Final Four loss still bothers Cardinals coach Rick Pitino, who is 0-4 against Wildcats counterpart John Calipari. Fortunately for Pitino, he enters Saturday s showdown in Louisville with an experienced team that s 11-1 and favored to reclaim Bluegrass State supremacy. Kentucky (8-3) started the season No. 3 behind Indiana and Louisville. But the Wildcats have fallen from the rankings and are looking to establish themselves with another group of talented freshmen. Bears hold off Highlands rally An Enterprise Staff Report The Harlan County Black Bears responded from their first loss of the season with a victory over Highlands in the consolation bracket of the Pikeville Invitational Tournament on Friday. Harlan County scored the game s first 14 points with the help of a strong defensive effort that led to 10 turnovers in the opening period. The Bears had to hang on late though as Highlands battled its way back with a physical defense that led to 16 HCHS turnovers in the final three quarters. We got off to a good start, but you have to give Highlands credit. They kept coming at us, Harlan County coach Mike Jones said. This type of physical game will be good experience for our kids. We d like to have done better finishing plays, but we hit some throws at the end. We ll see this type of aggressiveness and this style of officiating when we play in the WYMT (Classic). Sophomore forward Tyler Miller was the most consistent of the Bears with 19 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Alex Sergent added 12 points. Highlands (4-6) was led by senior forward Luke Turner with 18 points. Turner brought the Bluebirds back from a 12-point deficit to begin the final quarter as he had eight points, including back-toback 3-pointers, in a 10-1 run that cut the deficit to with 5:26 to play. Baskets by Miller and Aaron Caldwell pushed the lead back to seven with three minutes left before Highlands made a final push. The only thing for sure: Baltimore gets to play its first game at home as the AFC North champion. The opponent? Too early to tell. Yeah, we ve thought about it, running back Ray Rice said. We ve seen it. We know all the scenarios. An intriguing one: If the Ravens win on Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium, there s a chance they could play division-rival Cincinnati in back-to-back weeks. Their game on Sunday doesn t mean a lot. Baltimore (10-5) wrapped up its second straight division title and its fifth consecutive playoff appearance by beating the defending Super Bowl champion Giants last week. The only undecided is who they will host in the first game. If they win on Sunday and New England loses, it will be the Bengals (9-6), who have lost their last four games against the Ravens but wouldn t be intimidated by facing a familiar team. Cincinnati is locked in as the sixth seed, also waiting to find out where it will go for the first round. Could be Baltimore. Or New England. Or Houston. Or even Denver. We don t know, safety Chris Crocker said. You have an inkling of who it may be. But you really focus on the Baltimore Ravens. They put a licking Lady Bears From page 6 getting better. Harlan s struggles returned in the final period this time on the defensive end. South went seven-of-12 from the field for 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win. Katie Reynolds hit a layup to tie the game at 29 with 6:10 left. The Lady Cards outscored on us in the first game of the season. The Ravens opened the season impressively, beating the Bengals on a Monday night. The teams then took very different paths to the playoffs Baltimore won nine of its first 11 games, went into a slump on offense, changed coordinators, lost three straight games and finally nailed down the division title last week. Cincinnati opened 3-5 but has made the playoffs by winning six of its last seven on the strength of an emerging defense. The final regular season game represents a chance for both to fine-tune offenses that have plenty of room for improvement. Baltimore s has been so inconsistent that coach John Harbaugh fired coordinator Cam Cameron and elevated quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell for the last two games. Baltimore still looked out of sorts during a home loss to Denver, its third straight defeat. The offense had its best moments last week during the win over the Giants, piling up a seasonhigh 533 yards. Joe Flacco was sharp, throwing for back. Somerset close the period on a 15-6 run to reduce the deficit to six. The momentum carried over into the fourth quarter for the Lady Jumpers. A basket by Erica Ford capped an 11-2 start that gave Somerset a lead. A free throw line jumper from Mimes tied the game at 45 with 2:33 remaining. Edwards pushed the margin back to three with a trey from the top of the key, before Noe took over down the stretch. They extended their defense, and we started playing not to lose instead of attacking. We had some people that didn t want to make a play and it got down to the point where we had to make a play, Nolan said. We executed really good 309 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Rice and Bernard Pierce each ran for more than 100 yards. We needed that, Rice said. We needed that, especially coming off that threegame skid. For us to come out there and execute the way we did, that s definitely a confidence booster. The focus Sunday will be on Flacco, who is usually impressive against Cincinnati. Flacco has completed 71 percent of his passes in the last four games against the Bengals all victories with five touchdowns, two interceptions and a passer rating of Flacco finally looked comfortable in the Ravens up-tempo approach against the Giants. Obviously, it worked pretty well and there are always things that we can work on, Flacco said. We re working every week to improve those things and get as good as we can get. But it was a good point, and a good game for us to build off of and try to kind of carry into the next few weeks. Cincinnati s offense is still looking for a break-out game. The Bengals have reached the playoffs on the strength of their defense, which has held six of the last seven opponents to 13 points or fewer. The controversy Brock referenced involved the legality of funding a hotel project using the restaurant tax money. Several members of the Bell County Tourism Commission made claims that it was illegal to fund the hotel project using restaurant tax revenue. In a letter from Attorney General Jack Conway, it states the restaurant tax revenue could be used for America's Funniest Home Videos America's Funniest Home Videos a hotel project because state statutes only state the money from the tax has to be turned over to the tourism commission. The statute also states the money from the restaurant tax must be used for the purpose of promoting and developing convention and tourist activities and facilities in the public interest. 11 Saturday, December 29, 2012 Religion Page 11 Harlan Daily Enterprise Question: What will be different in 2013? This Christmas and the year 2012 has certainly been an interesting time. It is very normal to write that we now see the end of the year is here. After Christmas, New Year s is the next big moment, but this year has been filled with lots of deadlines, cliffs and the prediction of the end of all things was predicted to be the End of the World, at least according to followers of the Mayan calendar. I have not taken any type of survey, but I am predicting some no doubt wished the world had ended. There were others who planned celebrations for this moment in time. I didn t attend any such events, but I am tempted to buy a T-shirt promoting that I survived the moment had financial woes and, the most recent, approaching the fiscal cliff has been left in the hands of the democrats and republicans. I feel safe to make a prediction on this one for sure no solution. However, the political powers in charge will want us to feel that they have really accomplished something no matter what. There is only one answer for financially difficult times. Live within your means and you cannot buy what you do not have the money to purchase. Excuse me, I meant to write that we the people must live within our means, but that rule of thought doesn t apply to the government. They are spending our money and not their s so the common sense rules do not apply. Nevertheless, 2012 has been a very interesting time. During the presidential election, we heard that if President Obama was Sunday School Lesson: Acts The making of a new year Revelation 21: Here we are on the threshold of a new year. In just a few days the second hand will click past midnight and 2012 will become A time for a fresh start, a new day, a clean slate.who are we kidding? The only difference between 2012 and 2013 is one second on a clock. When we wake up on January 1st the same things that dogged us on Monday will be waiting for us on Tuesday. It is doubtful that the bill collectors are thinking a new year means a clean slate for those they called as 2012 slipped into The wardens of the prisons are not going to open the front gates of the penitentiaries to give all the inmates a fresh start. If I go to bed on December 31st with a bad cold chances are good I will wake-up in the same condition rather than a new day of good health. The introduction of this lesson has all the ingredients to John Ditty make a good batch of despair. Is there any way we can go into the Bible and turn this one around. If these first thoughts are the recipe for discouragement, is there anything we can find in God s Word that might give us the makings for a good new year? Though the answer to that question should be obvious for Christians let s not simply presume of that the message of a new beginning is found in the Bible; let s see what the God has to say on the subject. Here are just a few of God s thoughts on the topic: He who was seated on the throne said, I am making everything new! Then he said, Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true. (Revelation 21:5) Of course this has to do with a new beginning after time ends and God makes a new Heaven and Earth in which His people will live. But this must not be the only time that God starts over. The writer of Hebrews reminds us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8) So if there is a time in the future for new beginnings, are there times in the present for the same? Here in lies the answer to that question: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17) Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6) But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33) Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4) Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10) Because of the Lord s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him. (Lamentations 3:22-24) Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. (Colossians 3:9-10) Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. (1 Peter 1:3-6) But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. (2 Peter 3:13) All these verses have a common thread that runs through them. They all speak of newness. Within them is the making of a fresh start, a new day, a clean slate.a New Year. The key ingredient is Jesus Christ. A new start is not contingent on a calendar or clock but on a heart changed by and through Jesus. Seeking first His kingdom, trusting Him with all your heart, being made a new creation through His death, His mercy, the living hope that He gives through the His resurrection, it is in these that a new start is found. So do you desire this New Year to begin with and be filled by all that is new and good? If so, begin with Jesus Christ as both Lord and Savior of your life. He will indeed make all things new in you. And, better still this is what God desires for you. He came to make all people new, any who would accept the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23). Without the difference that Jesus makes in the life a person, there is not much chance and chance it is, for January 1 to be any different than December 31. Sadly, it does not matter what year is plugged in after the month and day, whether it is 2013 or beyond, the future without Christ will be the same and worse than the past without Him. But, and here s the wonderful news, a future with Him will be unimaginably better than a past without. The situations and events may not change but your hope and security will. The coming of the New Year is not your choice to make; 2013 is coming unless God s decides it against it. But how you enter the New Year is your choice. This year has been a roller coaster of emotions, outburst, name calling and I guess the one thing for certain is that if Monday arrives it will be the last day of The question we should be asking ourselves today is what will be different in 2013? I believe Christmas represents the best of change, new direction and new opportunities. The wise men in the Christmas Story of the Birth of Jesus didn t return from where they had come from, instead they went in another direction. Meeting Jesus in that manger was a life-changing moment for them. For me personally, I met Jesus through many experiences in my life prior to asking Him to come into my heart. When I took that action, I too began a journey in a different direction just like the wise men did in that day is a perfect year for change and with just a few days remaining, I cannot think of a better way to enter the year 2013 than with the assurance that when the world does comes to an end you will be safe and secure in His hands. If you are wondering if there is any identity that can be made between you and Jesus in 2012, I think that answer is clearly yes. In what many folks are calling difficult times, I think the opportunity to connect with Jesus is even more possible because of what Jesus experienced. The words to Sweet Little Jesus Boy remain powerful and impacting today. He was born in a Churches are peculiar places. I ve had the opportunity to serve a few of them. Some of my pastoral experiences have been overwhelmingly rewarding: Baptisms, weddings, the transformation of individuals and families. Some other experiences have been about as much fun as a sharp stick in the eye. And the churches which I have served have met in a diverse number of places: In the hollow of a school gymnasium; in a leaky storefront on the wrong side of the tracks; in a multi-million dollar sanctuary with all the technological bells and whistles; in an old redbrick church so old it barely escaped the fires of General Sherman s army (some of the deacons in that old redbrick church building may have served in Sherman s army; but I digress). Here is one of the many things that make churches peculiar: The most heated arguments in the church were not over our location or theology or future plans. No, the worst controversies I ever endured were over our style of worship. Should we use hymnals or modern worship music? Should drums be allowed in the sanctuary? Is it blasphemy to move the pulpit to accommodate the children s choir? What would happen if someone clapped or raised their hands during the solo? These are the questions that send the ulcerated pastor scurrying to his or her gastrologist. See, with all these exotic locales came an equally exotic variety of worship styles. I ve preached after a stately anthem performed by robed choir Until Then Tim Mills manger, but he deserved better than that. The world didn t know who he was. No recognition for the Lord who had come to save us. He wasn t seen as the person who had come to take our sins away, yet that was exactly what he came to do. Misunderstood, the world s eyes were blind to see Him for who he was. Sadly, today many are still missing the signs of who members and pipe organs. I ve tapped my foot and clapped my hands to the cranking riffs of old hippies with electric guitars. I ve listened closely to the tight four-part harmony of southern gospel. I ve worn a suit and tie to church; I ve worn shorts and sandals. I ve delivered time-honored three point sermons with a poem and a prayer; and I ve preached with the technological assistance of multimedia, projectors, videos and fog machines. I ve witnessed the traditional Easter cantata; and I ve even seen a few interpretive dance steps across the church podium. And all this worship diversity is in a single strain of the Protestant tradition! This doesn t account for the truly wild multiplicity of worship expression that stretches across the Christian biosphere from the Pentecostals to the Presbyterians. Which of these styles is right? I don t presume to know. Our form of worship will always be dictated by our traditions, our culture, and our context. A look at how Christians from other countries and times worship proves this The words to Sweet Little Jesus Boy remain powerful and impacting today. He was born in a manger, but he deserved better than that. The world didn t know who he was. No recognition for the Lord who had come to save us. He is now. The old Negro Spiritual was sung in a first person audience. It was simple, sincere and an intimate expression of feeling. The song says, The world treat you mean Lord, treat me mean too but that s how things is down here. I think there are plenty of opportunities for us to identify with Jesus Christ given what he experienced in life. Exotic varieties of worship styles Keeping the Faith Ronnie McBrayer point. Which worship style is right is, after all, the wrong question. The better questions are, Does our worship push us out of our church sanctuaries (or wherever it is we meet) to be Christ to the world? What happens when the worship service is over? These are the more appropriate questions. If our worship moves us past ourselves to the risen and redeeming Christ sent to love the world, then the worship is right. If our worship sends us into the community as the Father sent his own Son, then it is empowered with spirit and truth. But if our worship focuses us, even in subtle ways, on ourselves, then it is selfishness at best and sacrilege at worst. It isn t worship at all. The final words of the old Latin mass were, Ite missa est Get out! The priests who daily invoked these words over their congregations understood worship s purpose. When the last song is sung, the last prayer offered, and the last homily delivered, the goal of all worship is to redemptively and missionally leave the sanctuary in service to others. So, take your pick: Sermons or liturgy; southern gospel or rock and roll; drums or pipe organs; corporate prayer or contemplation; kneeling benches or mosh pits. But if these things do not translate into loving action in the community, if these things do not force us out of the building and out to others, we aren t being worshipful at all. Do our worship styles matter? Sure they does. But what happens afterwards matters all the more. Explaining the Seven Sacraments Sacraments within the Catholic church are ceremonies or acts that are regarded as signs of divine grace. Though there are seven sacraments, they are broken down into three categories. The Sacraments of Initiation, the Sacraments of Healing and the Sacraments at the Service of Communion each have different meaning and each are an integral part of a Catholic s life. Sacraments of Initiation The Sacraments of Initiation are important to establish the foundation of a Christian life. These sacraments include Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist, or First Holy Communion as it is commonly referred to as. * Baptism: The first sacrament of initiation, Baptism is often performed on infants and involves pouring water on the recipient s head three times. Receiving the Sacrament of Baptism is considered essential for salvation. * Confirmation: The second sacrament of initiation, Confirmation strengthens and confirms baptismal grace and, upon receiving the sacrament, candidates are officially recognized as adults in the eyes of the church. * Eucharist: Though it s the third sacrament of initiation, the Sacrament of the Eucharist is received before the Sacrament of Confirmation. During the Sacrament of the Eucharist, communicants receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ for the first time. Sacraments of Healing The Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Annointing of the sick are the two sacraments of healing. * Penance: Penance is a sacrament of spiritual healing wherein baptized Catholics exhibit contrition and confess their sins to a priest. Also referred to as Reconciliation, the Sacrament of Penance is not complete until penitents perform a task of reparation, which often includes reciting prayers. * Anointing of the Sick: The second sacrament of healing, the Anointing of the Sick occurs when a priest anoints a sick person with blessed oils. Catholics typically only receive this sacrament when they are seriously ill, though it is possible to receive the sacrament more than once should a person recover and then need to receive the sacrament again in the future. Sacraments at the Service of Communion The sacraments at the service of communion, which include Holy Orders and Marriage, are not received by all Catholics. * Holy Orders: The Sacrament of Holy Orders is received when a man is made a bishop, priest or a deacon. This sacrament is administered by a bishop and those hoping to receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders to enter the priesthood must first complete a seminary program that includes the study of philosophy and theology. * Marriage: Couples who marry within the Catholic Church receive the Sacrament of marriage, which is considered an exclusive bond sealed by God.
