The school year is continuing to fly by. In fact, November 17th represented the mid-point of the second quarter and, as a result, you will be receiving either via e- mail or hard copy, a progress report for your son or daughter. If you encounter any questions or concerns regarding these reports, please feel free to contact the appropriate teacher or guidance counselor for assistance and/or clarification. In the brief time since our last correspondence, many great things have occurred at North High School. From a State Semifinal appearance in football, to 3 State Cross Country and 1 State Swimming Qualifiers, and from All-District students in both the fine arts and fall sports, to a volleyball season like none other in school history, the beginning of the school year is shaping up to be one to remember, as our Panthers truly are Honoring the Past and Claiming the Future. A great example of this Honoring of the Past occurred on November 11th, as over 1400 students packed our gym to pay respect to our Veterans through our 16th Annual USO Show. As you might imagine, the student performances were remarkable, and the respect our student body showed the Veterans was indicative of their tremendous upbringings. (Pictured above: A number of our Veterans standing at attention during the morning singing of our National Anthem) Moreover, since our last correspondence, there have been a number of examples of us Winning the Day at Fort Zumwalt North. As you may have heard, our varsity football team is in the midst of a season like none other in the history of our high school, or any high school in the Fort Zumwalt School District. The boys not only collected their 3rd consecutive district title, but they also have achieved victories in both their state quarterfinal and state semifinal games against Springfield-Glendale and Columbia-Battle, respectively. In the game against the Battle Spartans the Panthers found themselves in a tied game with just over 30 seconds to play. A 46 yard strike from senior quarterback Cade Brister to senior wide receiver Deiondre Stockton found the Panthers at the Battle ten yard line with just seconds to play. A 27 yard field goal off the foot of senior kicker Matt Bennick as time expired propelled the Panthers into their first state final in school history. That state championship game will be held on Saturday, November 26th at Plaster November 21, 2016 Volume 11, Issue 5 Stadium on the campus of Missouri State University in Springfield, MO. There is no question that the boys appreciate the support they have received thus far this season and would love to have your support one last time in Springfield. For those of you who are not aware, Grad Night is an all night chemical free party for our graduating Seniors. It is important to note that we are seeking help from the parents of our entire student body. Plans include games, music, food, door prizes and much more. A party of this magnitude requires the help of everyone and the outpouring of support we have received at this juncture of the school year is greatly appreciated. Also, please mark your calendars for two Grad Night fundraising events. The first is the Grad Night Trivia Night will be held on Saturday, February 4th at 7:00 p.m. at the O Fallon Elks Lodge, located across the street from North High School. In addition, our 2nd Annual Dartball Tournament is being held Saturday, April 1st at the St. Paul Picnic Grounds. Keep an eye on the district s Peachjar announcements for flyers further promoting each event. Finally, be on the lookout for Grad Night Committee s display at the Celebration of Lights running Nov Dec. 30 at Fort Zumwalt Park. Cookies will be on sale. A+ Tutoring: First semester tutoring assignments are winding down. Please encourage your child to listen closely to the announcements for any changes or cancellations. All students wishing to tutor during second semester must complete a new placement form, and the form can be picked up in the main office beginning December 1st and should be returned no later than December 16th. In order to be placed, a student must have completed a tutor training session. Seniors will have first priority for tutoring assignments. Once all seniors have been placed for second semester, then juniors and sophomores will be placed as assignments are available. Please contact Mrs. Longo or Mrs. Burkemper for more information. Don't forget, the next tutor training is December 8th at 1:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Any student wishing to tutor, who has not been trained, should plan to attend. The Fort Zumwalt School District participates in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. Children from families whose current income has either temporarily or permanently fallen below certain Federal guidelines can qualify for free or reduced priced meals. It is our hope that Curriculum Night provides future and prospective North High parents with the opportunity to meet with department representatives in every curricular area to discuss concerns or questions about student course selections for the school year and beyond. In an effort to provide families with more individualized attention, we will run four separate sessions of Curriculum Night that will be divided by alphabet. 10 In case of inclement weather: Should inclement weather make it necessary to close school or to dismiss school early, Fort Zumwalt School District will share the information with parents several ways. 1. School Messenger is our automated system that can reach all of our families in minutes, by text, and telephone call. The system will call the primary number (listed in our database as the home phone) as well as two secondary numbers (listed in our database as parent cell phone numbers). PLEASE BE CERTAIN THE NUMBER YOU WANT CONTACTED FIRST IS LISTED FOR YOUR STUDENT AS THE HOME NUMBER. Please update this information whenever necessary. 2. School Messenger also posts to Facebook (like FZSchools) and Twitter Closings also will be posted on the Fort Zumwalt School District website: 3. TV channels 2, 4, 5 and 30 will broadcast information, as will radio station KMOX (1120 AM). If weather and road conditions worsen after students arrive, the district decision concerning early dismissal will be made as soon as possible. In the event of an Early Dismissal, the same procedure to reach parents will be followed. Fort Zumwalt North High School will dismiss at 12:25. All after-school activities, including on-site after-care at our elementary schools, and facility usage for the night, will be cancelled. A few more notes about School Messenger: School Messenger is an integral tool in Fort Zumwalt School District s home-school communications. When utilized, it can send text and messages as well as call the home and cell phone numbers entered in our student database. If you only have a cell phone, that number is entered as the home phone number to ensure you are contacted when School Messenger is used. IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION CURRENT WITH YOUR SCHOOL OFFICE. You can send an or note, call during regular office hours, or log-in to the parent portal to make updates to phone numbers. Simply click on the Family Data box under the Meals tab to see the phone numbers we have for your family in our system. Click Edit, and scroll down to Family Data. Remember, the number entered as Home Telephone #1 will be the primary number for School Messenger. This is the only number School Messenger will call between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. Scroll down to Primary Parent and then Primary Parent Spouse to verify cell phone numbers. If you make updates, be sure to click Submit Changes for School to Update Their Records at the top of the screen. Caller ID will display , the number for the district s main office. IF YOU SEE A MISSED CALL PLEASE CHECK YOUR VOICE MAIL as School Messenger will leave the complete message if your voice mail picks up after 5 rings. If there is no voice mail, School Messenger will attempt to call you again in 15 minutes. During the day, School Messenger will contact the numbers entered as home and cell numbers in our student database. After 7 p.m., only the number you have listed as Home Telephone #1 will be used until 7 a.m.
