As Alumni of these programs, you have laid the foundation for the future of PM&R in Pittsburgh. For those of you who have remained in our area, and those of you who have moved far and wide, we want to officially welcome you to our new Alumni Association, and our new newsletter The Point. The triangle represents not only Downtown Pittsburgh, but also the three groups that make up our Alumni. We want to hear from you and how you are doing. Inside you will find a list of our Alums quite impressive to see how many of you have graduated from the Pittsburgh programs. If we missed anyone please contact us so we can update the list. Also enclosed is an Alumni Survey. Please complete it and share what you have been up to. Your answers will help us with the Featured Physiatrist column and a section called Alumni News. As the current Program Director and Associate Director of the now combined PM&R Residency Program, we are very proud of all of you, and look forward to hearing from you! - Wendy and Mary Ann Hospital St. Francis Wendy Helkowski, MD Residency Program Director Mary Ann Miknevich, MD Residency Program Assoc. Director

2 FROM THE DESK OF... MICHAEL BONINGER, MD PROFESSOR AND CHAIR DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL MEDICINE & REHABILITATION 2 When I first arrived in Pittsburgh in 1993 PM&R was a Division of Orthopedic Surgery, the 16 residents outnumbered the full time faculty 4 to 1, and the division did not have any external research funding. Later this academic year we will celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the Department of PM&R. We have much to celebrate. At the top of the list is the bringing together of the Pittsburgh residency programs, Mary Ann and Wendy will telling you about that. My job is to tell you about what else is happening in the department. My sincere hope is that, as alumni of one of the residency programs, you will feel pride in our accomplishments. Our department is currently ranked second in NIH funding among all PM&R departments in the country. I am confident that if one included Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs funding we would be a clear cut number 1. We have strong research in assistive technology, traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury (SCI) and a burgeoning direct brain interface program. We have accredited fellowships is SCI and pediatrics that are internal to our department. We are part of accredited fellowships in Sport Medicine and Pain Medicine with the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery and Anesthesiology. We also have non accredited fellowships in Musculoskeletal Sports & Spine and in TBI. Our faculty have major roles at a national level in the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the Association of Academic Physiatrists. Locally, our faculty members are respected by the research and clinical rehab specialists and the community we serve. The faculty and staff of the department has grown to over 150 people and that does not count the faculty who are our partners in the residency program, Medical Rehabilitation Inc. In future issues I would like to tell you more specifics about the cutting edge research in the department and how we are pushing rehabilitation care into the next century. At the core of all we do is our residency program and we believe our alumni are our strongest untapped resource. -Mike The Point You are invited The Point Alumni Social at the 2011 AAPMR Annual Assembly November in Orlando, Florida If you re interested in receiving information about the social please check the Alumni Social box on the survey on page 4,details will be ed as they become available. Celebrating 10 Years of Department Status! A 10 year anniversary celebration in Pittsburgh is being planned. Stay tuned for information as it becomes available. Watch your for updates

3 FEATURED ALUMNI...MARGARET (PEG) REIDY, MD 3 Margaret E. Reidy, MD ( 89) currently serves as the President of Rehabilitation Network and Associate Medical Director for Corporate Care Management for Health System. The Rehabilitation Network consists of rehabilitation units in 5 community hospitals, Presbyterian Hospital and the Rehabilitation Institute (RI) at Hospital. In her Care Management functions, she works with Nurse Care Managers, Social Workers, hospital personnel and Medical Staffs to assist in improving patient movement throughout the continuum of care. Dr. Reidy and I met in her well lit Hospital office which looks out over the Uptown neighborhood of Pittsburgh. One notices her intelligent green eyes right away. Her confidence and ease makes her seem taller somehow. She made me immediately comfortable by telling me a story about one of her daughters. It is no secret that no matter what her professional status, her family is top priority. Here she answers questions about her new position as President of the Rehabilitation Network and how her training brought her to this point in her career. 1.When did you graduate from the Pitt Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency? I graduated in 1989 under John Jeffrey Nicholas as the residency director. I was in the third residency class and the first class which did a 4 year residency program. We had only 2 residents per year 2.What are your new job responsibilities? The administration is responsible for quality and operations in Rehab at. Montefiore, Horizon, Northwest, Passavant, ST. Margaret, and McKeesport. It is my responsibility to make sure the Inpatient Rehab Units at all the hospitals are adherent to regulations, provide quality care and maintain their patient census. 3.What excites you about your job? Many of the people I have trained and worked with in the past are now Department Chairs and internationally known in their own specialties. I hope to utilize this network I have built to assist in improving Rehab services and Rehab prominence. Because of my background as a physician, I see myself as a diplomat and translator between administration and physicians; I am more sensitive to the clinical aspects than the usual nonphysician administrator. I am especially excited about working with Mike Boninger, the Chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department. 4.What changes have you observed of the Residency Program through the years since you were a Rehab resident? I am very impressed by the quality of the new applicants for the residency. The quality, organization and diversity of the didactics of the program are markedly improved as well. 5.What is your vision for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialty in Pittsburgh? Nationally? Adapt to change. Reinvent ourselves to meet the needs out there. PMR as a specialty should be user friendly, we should be visible in the community as the experts on people with disabilities, and develop the specialty care in inpatient Rehab units but also in other care settings. Overall, physiatrists should strive to have better outcomes in all areas of rehab by being seen as the consultant for people with disabilities across the spectrum from preventive health care to inpatient management. a) Challenges? Being ready for the payment reforms b) Are we prepared? Yes. We have good leadership here with Dr. Boninger and the talented faculty. Knowing the strengths of each academic and clinical faculty member enables me to refer people to the right treatment expert in Rehab but also to call on experts in our specialty to assist in policy and program development and in strategic planning. c) Impact of new health care regulation? I feel that we have been preparing ourselves in Rehab and that we, here at Pittsburgh, are in a good place due to being part of a profitable and progressive Healthcare system. 6.What else do you want people want to know about you? I like to hike for exercise and am lucky to have public lands near my home. Getting lost on a long hike is a great way to relax and clear my mind. Peg stated that she has been training her entire career for her present job. She feels that she is prepared for the responsibilities because as a physiatrist, she is comfortable working on a team. She is using her skills from Rehab to problem solve, think outside the box and demonstrate her leadership abilities. As in a typical day in Rehab, she solves little problems which sometimes adds up to solutions to bigger problems. -Betty Liu, MD Assistant Professor Director, Fellowship Programs
