1 SOONER UPDATE From the OUHSC Clinical Education Team March 2016 Thank you Thank you for your time and effort supervising and teaching students from OUHSC on their Clinicals and Fieldwork. Our first, second, and third year students participated in over 350, 4-10 week clinical rotations in These opportunities would not be possible without you. In May 2015, 24 OT and 60 PT students graduated. We are well underway with matching for the summer clinical and fieldwork placements. We are particularly in need of sites for this summer for our level I students for fieldwork. Please contact us at the addresses provided on the last page if you are interested in providing this valuable learning opportunity to our students. For the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 placements we will be matching starting in June. Please consider assisting. My fieldwork educator was very understanding and willing to help. She frequently asked me if there was anything I would like to do and allowed me to practice anything I had learned and wanted to get more practice with on patients. She challenged me to think critically and exposed me to everything she could while I was here. As an occupational therapy fieldwork educator, you play a vital role in the success of students and to the future of occupational therapy and from this course, you can expect to gain valuable knowledge, strategies, and skills. The DPT program was granted reaccreditation in April 2015.

3 Department News Groundbreaking The new OU Physical Therapy clinical groundbreaking ceremony was in October This clinic, which is part of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, is a collaborative effort with OU Physicians and the YMCA. The clinic will provide a continuum of care to members of the community that will span rehabilitation from an injury to prevention and health promotion. Stephenson Cancer Center Elizabeth Hile PhD, PT, NCS, CLT joined CAH faculty in July 2014 after 15 years teaching pathophysiology, neuroanatomy, and cancer rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh, and practicing in general acute care and outpatient neurorehab. Her research as a funded post-doctoral scholar focused on mobility changes with aging and cancer. Now Director of the new OUHSC/SCC Cancer Rehabilitation Science Program, she lectures on cancer rehabilitation, and conducts research on the benefits of prehabilitation and management of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. Dr. Hile s Cancer Rehabilitation Clinic, in the Stephenson Cancer Center, provides evidence-based care while developing new models of PT and OT service delivery for survivors with (or at risk for) orthopedic, neurologic, cardiopulmonary, pelvic floor, and lymphatic impairments. National Showcase Thubi Kolobe, PT, PhD, FAPTA obtained national accolades when her invention, the Self-Initiated Prone Powered Crawler, also known as the SIPPC was showcased at the Smithsonian Innovation Festival in Washington DC in September She along with her research counterpart from Virginia Commonwealth University were present to demonstrate and answer questions related to the invention.

4 Faculty Retirements Martha J. Ferretti, PT, MPH, FAPTA Professor Ferretti, University of Oklahoma Regents Professor, David Ross Boyd Professor and Elam-Plowman Professor in Physical Therapy is the chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences. She is retiring at the end of July 2016 after 42 years with the department in multiple roles, but as chair of the department since Details related to retirement activities will be forthcoming. Toby Hamilton PhD, MPH, OTR/L, FAOTA Dr. Hamilton is retiring in June 2016 following 31 years of service at OUHSC. Please begin thinking of stories you would like to share related to how she influenced your education and careers. Stay tuned for announcements related to retirement events. Again this year over 80+ PT and OT student volunteers from both the Tulsa and Oklahoma City campus provided manual therapy and stretching to over 350+ runners at the finish line of the Tulsa Run. Student volunteers joined faculty to ease the musculoskeletal aches and pains associated with running You re in great hands was the phrase llinked to the event.

5 More Department News Joshua T. Williams, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, CSCS Josh Williams joined the faculty in July of Prior to joining OU- HSC, Josh worked for the last 13 years in clinical settings specializing in sports and orthopedic care. He has completed an APTA accredited Sports Physical Therapy Residency and is ABPTS certified in both sports and orthopedics. He is a Registered International Sports Physical Therapist and a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist. He has many years of volunteer experience serving as medical staff for a variety of different community events including the UCO Endeavor Games, OU Medicine Corporate Challenge, and the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. Josh hopes to bring his unique blend of academic and clinical experience to the students of OUHSC through his teaching efforts in a variety of different sports and orthopedic related coursework.
