2 The Community Schools Story Brockton Community Schools was founded in 1970 to provide community education, enrichment and recreation opportunities to children and adults throughout the city. In the past four decades, it has grown and evolved, serving thousands of children and adults in a wide variety of programs, from basketball leagues to sewing courses, English As A Second Language Instruction, GED preparation, automotive repair, yoga and computer classes. Community Schools also provides highly successful vacation and before- and after-school academic and enrichment programs for Brockton children, providing safe spaces and caring adults 12 months a year. A division of the Brockton Public Schools, Community Schools is operated and staffed by highly-qualified professionals from the educational, business, sports and arts communities. The office is open throughout the year, and suggestions for new programs and ideas for how to improve our offerings are always welcome. Community Schools currently oversees four major programmatic areas: academic support and enrichment programs for students, continuing education and ESL services for adults, and recreation and enrichment programs for the community. We have provided quality enrichment and educational opportunities to tens of thousands of greater Brockton residents for over 44 years, making it one of the most successful community education programs in Massachusetts. Our programs give children and adults an opportunity to have fun, learn and connect with their friends and neighbors in a relaxed setting. Young students can have fun while developing motor and social skills in our Cooperative Sports and Games programs. Mini Day Fun Camp incorporates arts and crafts, movement and play. Students can choose from a variety of sports in our Get Ready program. Those students learning to swim or training to compete should join our Aquatics program. Budding actors will benefit from our celebrated Act One Scene 1 theater program, culminating in two productions at the end of the session. Academic Enrichment camps are always popular. Elementary school students can choose reading or camps that provide hands-on learning and real life situations. Summer School for Rising 9 th Graders and High School students provides the opportunity to earn credits and improve skills and knowledge in various courses. For adults we are offering an expanded Aquatics program this summer. If you are looking for an early morning workout in the pool, an evening swim class or an aqua exercise class, our highly trained instructors are there to help you reach your goals. 4 Cooperative Sports & Games (Ages 3-4) This program is designed to help your preschooler improve his/her motor development and build socialization skills. Activities include circle games, relays, group games and modified sports like teeball and kickball. Two-week sessions held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Baker School. Cooperative Sports & Games (Ages 5-6) This program for children entering kindergarten or first grade is geared toward improving gross motor skills and building socialization skills such as cooperation and good sportsmanship. Activities are conducted both in and outdoors and include modified sports (tee-ball and kickball), circle games, relays and other age-appropriate games. Two-week sessions held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Baker School. Sessions: Resident Non-Resident 1 - July 7 th -16 th $65 $ July 21 st -30 th $65 $75 Kiddie Fun Camp (Entering Grades K & 1) Children entering kindergarten and first grade will take part in activities including arts and crafts, cooking, storytelling, and a variety of games for a fun-filled camp experience. The program will be held at the Barrett Russell School, 45 Oakdale Avenue, and give children with disabilities an opportunity to learn, grow and have summer fun with their typicallydeveloping peers. 5 Mini Day Fun Camp for Grades 2-7 Designed for children entering Grades 2-7, this camp includes a recreational swim in Manning Pool at Brockton High School, a variety of sports and games, arts and crafts projects that utilize a wide range of materials, movement drama, puppetry, musical games and songs. Held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Brockton High School. Free lunch 11:30 a.m. to noon. 6 Interactive Learning Camps entering Grades 2-5 Summer Reading Adventures Camp Entering Grades 2-3 Dive into a sea of summer adventures and discover the wonderful world of reading. Explore summer activities through poetry, reader s theater and literature. Your child will be actively engaged in hands-on literacy experiences and foster a lifelong love of literacy. Reader s Theater/Summer Skits Entering Grades 4-5 Sink your teeth into summer reading by creating your own stories and skits. Explore famous authors and poets through book writing, reader s theater and other hands-on experiences. Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Math Camp Entering Grades 2-5 Mastering math has never been so fun and exciting! Students will be aces in arithmetic at the end of a two-week session. Certified teachers will show students how much fun math can really be, demonstrating how addition, subtraction, multiplication and division have real world applications. Students will visit a bank vault, run a camp store, form a business and play the Who Wants to be a Millionaire game. Participants will develop more confidence and hone their skills, increase self-esteem and map futures through math. 7 Smart Start Extended Day Program The Smart Start Extended Day Program is an academic and enrichment extension program offered that provides safe spaces, caring adults and a fun and interactive learning environment during the summer, school vacations and before- and after-school during the school year. Staffed by certified teachers and other personnel, the Extended Day program is operated at 12 school sites during the school year, one school site during school vacations, and this summer will be held at the Dr. William Arnone School. This fee-based program is a value to many working parents who want to make sure that their children are not only having fun, but learning during outof-school time. Vouchers are accepted through PACE. During the summer, Smart Start Extended Day provides a relaxed environment where students continue to build upon their year-round education through fun activities, crafts and recreational opportunities. Special events, themed activities and field trips are held throughout the summer. Students in Grades K-3 can take advantage of visits to the Manning Swimming Pool. Participants in Grades 4-7 take part in the Get Ready & Aquatics Programs at Brockton High School this summer. 8 ACT ONE SCENE 1 A Theater Arts Program for Young Performers Young actors and actresses are given the opportunity to take the stage in a highly energetic summer production staged by Carol Thomas, the celebrated former director of the Brockton High School Drama Department. Performers entering Grades 5-12 are given the fundamentals of staging a show, from dramatics and dialogue to prop building, costuming and promotions. The four-week summer program is held at Brockton High School and culminates in two performances of an original musical production, where participants can showcase their talents for their families, friends and audiences. ACT ONE SCENE 1 Week July 6, 7, 8, 9 Week July 13, 14, 15, 16 Week July 20, 21, 22, 23 Production Week...July 27, 28, 29, 30 Production Nights...July 31 & August 1 The program is held Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. except during production week. Transportation will be provided. 9 Aquatics for all ages and abilities Early Morning Wake-Up Workout Jumpstart the day with a quick aquatic workout that combines calisthenics and stretches in the shallow end of the pool. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:00 8:00 AM. A 4-week session is held July 7 30 at a cost of $80. STUDENTS Swimming Instruction Community Schools offers swimming lessons to the beginner with little or no experience in the water, as well as more advanced instruction for those ready to master the four competitive strokes. All courses are held at the BHS Pool for students entering Grades 1-8. Diving Instruction Students ages 7-15 will learn the basics of the competitive dive while mastering the skills necessary to execute graceful springboard front and back dives in various positions such as tuck and pike. Programs meeting Monday-Friday, 8:30-11:30 a.m. A free lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Session 1 - July 6-17 $140 residents, $170 non-residents Session 2 - July $70 residents, $85 non-residents Session 3 - July 27-July 31 $70 residents, $85 non-residents ADULTS Aqua Exercise Combo This isn t just any aqua exercise, it s a total body workout that includes energy-boosting, core conditioning, fat burning, cardiovascular and strength training. Each class will combine a deep water and shallow water workout, excellent for men and women of every level of fitness. Very low impact makes this ideal for those with arthritis or joint conditions. Monday and Wednesday evenings, 7:30-8:30 PM. Adult Learn & Swim Build confidence in the water and refine your swimming skills with this low-pressure, supportive swimming class. Our instructors are caring and patient who will help you become comfortable in the water and achieve your personal goals. Monday and Wednesday evenings, 6:15-7:15 PM. These 10-week courses begin the week of July 6th and run through August 5th. Registration: $90. 9

10 Get Ready Summer Sports Programs for Athletes Entering Grades 1-9 Get Ready sports camps offer a number of sports programs that build self confidence, encourage teamwork and develop new skills. Our programs are staffed by talented and motivated instructors who give young athletes an opportunity to have fun. Students will learn the fundamentals of their sport, take part in drills and compete in intramural games. Youngsters take part in a variety of sports programs, including baseball, basketball, baton, soccer, tennis, cheerleading, golf, and gymnastics. New this year is flag football for students entering Grades 5-9. Please note: Baton is available Sessions 1 and 2, Golf is available Sessions 1 and 2, and Flag Football is available Sessions 3 and 4. 11 Raise Up Basketball Camp Raise Up Basketball Camp teaches boys and girls entering Grades 5-12 the fundamentals of basketball, from dribbling and shooting to teamwork and good sportsmanship. Each camper will also develop important personal skills like discipline, confidence and pride. The program is held weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Brockton High School. Session 1 - July $130 resident, $160 non-resident Session 2 - August 3-7 $130 resident, $160 non-resident Session 1 & 2 - July 27 - August 7 $220 resident, $280 non-resident Free lunch and supervised swim included. AFTERNOON JUNIOR BOXER CAMP Stay and have some fun with us after the morning program is over. Junior Boxer Camp will run daily 12:00 noon - 4:00 p.m. Join us for activities that include: Arts and Crafts Cooperative Sports and Games Swimming Afternoon transportation will not be provided. 12 BROCKTON HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER SCHOOL The Brockton Public Schools Summer School program provides Rising 9th and high school students with the opportunity to repeat school-year classes during the summer to earn credit, improve skills and enhance classroom knowledge. This 20-day, feebased program is held at Brockton High School during the month of July; it provides students a unique opportunity to enhance their education. All instructors are certified teachers knowledgeable in their subject areas. Courses offered include algebra, geometry, biology, earth science, History, English and English as a Second Language classes and electives. Brockton Public Schools students must have a Summer School Course Selection Form signed by their guidance counselor in order to register. All students MUST register during the scheduled registration periods in the Green Café. At least 50% of tuition must be paid at the time of registration, either in cash, credit card or by money order. Full amount must be paid by July 17th for students to receive course credit. Summer School tuition will be nonrefundable. Credit card payments will be accepted with proper identification. Summer School follows Brockton High School policies for student behavior. Classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment (with tuition refund). 13

14 Driver Education The Brockton Community Schools Driver Education Program is offered at Brockton High School. A minimum number of students must register online before a class can start. FEE STRUCTURE Classroom Fee: $250 (Payment options are available) Driving Fee: $340 Driving Fee: $440 (if attended Driver Education Classroom at another location) Each additional hour(s): $40** Driving Instructor and Car Rental for License Exam: $75** Parent Class: No Fee for parents with a student in the program.** All RMV fees extra. **ADDITIONAL FEES MAY APPLY IF NOT A BROCKTON COMMUNITY SCHOOLS DRIVER ED STUDENT Community Schools has a no-refund policy. A credit voucher will be issued. The fee will only be refunded if the course is canceled. PAYMENTS or 10 AM to 2PM daily at Brockton Community Schools 43 Crescent Street Brockton, MA WHO MAY ENROLL The course is open to all Massachusetts residents, with preference given to Brockton residents. The course is offered on a continuing basis throughout the school year. The Summer session is held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in BHS Room E118. Driving is offered after school, during school vacations, and during our Summer School program. We require each student to be at least 15 years and 9 months of age when they start the classroom instruction. To participate in the driving part of the course, the student must be 16 years of age and have a valid Learner s Permit. REQUIREMENTS In order to receive a State Driver Education Certificate, each student must complete 30 hours of classroom instruction, 12 hours of driving and 6 hours of observation. A Parents/Guardian must also complete a 2 hour workshop, which will be held on one evening per month. The Registry of Motor Vehicles charges $15.00 for a driver education certificate. This fee, in the form of a money order made payable to the MASS DOT/RMV, will only be collected after the student has completed all requirements. 15 The Adult Learning Center offers a wide range of personalized classes to meet individual needs. These classes are taught by a highly qualified teaching staff both mornings and evenings. English as a Second Language classes enroll three times per year in the fall, winter, and spring. This class helps speakers of other languages improve their English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in a twenty class program taught by highly qualified/ certified teachers. Adult Enrichment & Recreation Programs We offer group exercise classes which include Adult Aquatics, Yoga, Total Body Conditioning Bootcamp, and Line Dancing to name a few. Joining a group exercise class can be overwhelming for anyone, our caring and knowledgeable instructors will make you feel right at home. All exercise classes are geared to any fitness level so don t be afraid you wouldn t be able to keep up, this is your class to do whatever YOU want to do. Ceramics, Jewelry 101, Cooking, and other crafting classes are available to bring out your creative side providing you with the tools and instruction to create something beautiful and functional for your home, office or to give as a gift. Auto Repair and Woodworking classes offer a hands on approach taught by experienced and certified instructors for all levels. Maybe you have commitment issues? That s okay, we also offer Quick Fix Classes for people on the run! Choices include: Paint Nights, Indian Cuisine Cooking, Investment Advisement, Getting Paid to Talk, and Extreme Couponing as well as other short term craft classes. 15
