1 Graduate Assistants for Residence Education and Academic Programs (2 Positions) Texas Tech University University Student Housing Residence Life General Description University Student Housing at Texas Tech University promotes each student s learning experience by creating safe, supportive learning environments for academic and personal success. University Student Housing is committed to the total development of the resident within an inclusive community through student leadership, programming, residence hall standards, and supportive learning environments in the residence halls. The Graduate Assistants for Residence Education and Academic Programs (REAP) (2), as educators, work with the Manager for Academic Initiatives to provide direction for student learning and academic success for residents, student staff, and professional staff living on campus at Texas Tech University. There are two (2) GA-REAP positions. One position focuses primarily on Learning Communities; the second position focuses primarily on Residential Tutoring. Both positions collaborate to support other academic and departmental initiatives. Essential Functions Essential functions or fundamental job responsibilities for the position of Graduate Assistant for REAP include: Traveling between assigned areas and other departmental facilities Directing and responding to fire alarms and other emergencies Managing the physical conditions of the residence hall facilities Operating a computer system using various types of software applications Ascending and descending multiple flights of stairs, especially in cases of emergencies Essential functions necessary for the position in the area of communications include: Reading reports, gathering and analyzing data, and compiling information for written reports Preparing written memorandums and documents and compiling the numerous forms needed in the daily operation of managing the residence halls Communicating effectively, both orally and written, with residents, parents, visitors, faculty, and staff. Non-essential job responsibilities include having the ability to operate various types of office equipment including computers, calculators, cash registers, and others.

2 Responsibilities The Graduate Assistants for REAP (2) are expected to fulfill all duties listed below, in addition to other projects and assignments determined by specific REAP Area role: Participating in departmental recruitment for professional staff, paraprofessional staff, and student leaders Participating in campus-wide and area training coordinated by Residence Life Promoting student learning throughout the Residence Life program and providing outreach programming Having knowledge in general education requirements and resources for specific college/ department advising questions; advising students on an as-needed basis Promoting and providing opportunities for growth Supporting and promoting student leadership and student groups within the residence halls Providing assistance and support with student discipline as needed Holding students accountable for their decisions and actions Understanding and supporting the educational curriculum of the Department Working closely with Hospitality Services, the Center for Campus Life, Career Center, Student Counseling Center, Recreational Sports, Raider Assistance Program, faculty members, and other departments on campus to develop educational experiences and opportunities Overseeing the facilitation and implementation of campus-wide programming efforts Speaking informally with residents about academic, personal, or community successes, concerns Promoting achievement and initiatives through nominations for departmental, campus, and national awards Supporting and administering approved departmental and divisional assessment programs/ initiatives Developing and maintaining print and digital marketing (including related websites) Facilitating on-going assessment of programs and initiatives Contributing to ongoing social justice programming for students and staff, including Tunnel of Oppression and Hunger Banquet Assisting with Residence Hall move-in, break period room checks, residence hall closing, etc. Opportunity to assist in advising University Student Housing Student Leadership Groups: Student Staff Leadership Council (SSLC), National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), Clean Up The Environment (C.U.T.E.) Club, and Raiders Helping Others (including advising Alternative Spring Break Trips) Administrative Responsibilities Distributing information Fulfilling expectations of a 30 hour work week with evening commitments Maintaining office hours for walk-in appointments with students Monitoring budget responsibilities within the position and student groups as assigned Assisting with facility management in renovation planning, communicating work orders, repair, and replacement needs, and supporting maintenance and custodial services for the area Responding to parent/ faculty concerns; referring difficult cases to appropriate personnel Attending meetings as scheduled and required Crisis Intervention/Response

3 Working with the Texas Tech University Police Department, Student Counseling Center, and other agencies on immediate response to incidents in the residence halls Exercising sound judgment and ethics to handle situations appropriately Departmental Committees Serving on one departmental committee which could include: Disney Think Tank, Staff Training, Staff Recruitment, Recognition, or Social Justice Education Serving on a divisional committee (if available) Opportunity to serve on departmental task forces On-call Responsibilities Serving in on-call rotation with other professional staff members (first year graduate staff shadow on-call responsibilities during the first semester before serving in the rotation the second semester and beyond) Being accessible by department provided cell phone 24-hours per day during one week shift Remaining within city limits Substituting for person on-call if necessary Specific Academic Initiative Assignments REAP GA Position #1: Residential Tutoring Coordinating the Residential Tutoring program for campus residents Recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising Residential Tutors Coordinating academic success services and programming in residence halls Maintaining academic resources and supplies Teaching staff to recognize early warning signs and make appropriate referrals for students struggling with academics Developing marketing and outreach materials for the residence halls REAP GA Position #2: Learning Communities Facilitating learning community events and serving as a liaison to campus stakeholders Facilitating and maintaining records of monthly stakeholder meetings for all Learning Communities Assisting staff in supporting and maintaining campus-wide and Learning Community-specific educational programs for students in the residence halls Assisting Residence Life staff in increasing college advising in halls, particularly during pre-registration Both REAP GA Positions: Programming and Outreach Coordinating annual Professing Excellence Ceremony each spring Coordinating and facilitating nomination and selection process for Professing Excellence Award Winners. The Graduate Assistants for REAP (2) are vital members of the residence hall community and the University Student Housing Staff. The Graduate Assistants for REAP (2) are expected to work with all staff in the development and implementation of management and learning initiatives for the entire Residence Life operation. Collaboration throughout the Department and campus community is vital to the success of these positions.

4 There will be many times throughout the year when the Graduate Assistants for REAP (2) will be expected to work evenings and weekends. Availability during this time will be determined in conjunction with the Graduate Assistants supervisor as well as other University Student Housing Graduate Assistants and department leadership. Qualifications A Bachelor s Degree is required and candidates must have previous relevant experience, preferably in a residence hall setting. This position is designed for individuals who are pursuing a Master s Degree. At the time of employment, candidates must be accepted into a graduate degree program from Texas Tech University, Higher Education Administration program is preferred. The Graduate Assistants for REAP (2) positions are considered security sensitive positions. Applicants will be subjected to a criminal background check and drug test. All candidates will be required to submit academic transcripts to verify education. The Graduate Assistants for REAP (2) must be committed to working within an innovative environment that is focused on the education of individuals and groups of college students within a residential setting through the development of cohesive living and learning communities. The Texas Tech University Student Housing Residence Life program is built on a student learning philosophy supporting student involvement in government, residence hall standards, programming, community development, and supportive learning environments. Remuneration The Graduate Assistants for REAP (2) are a part-time (30 hours per week) appointment with a salary of $1,300 per month (the state of Texas has no state income tax) for full-time enrollment. If enrollment falls below nine graduate hours, the stipend will be $780 per month. The Graduate Assistants for REAP (2) are expected to work from 10:00am to 4:00pm on all University work days unless prior arrangements have been made with his/her supervisor. This positions also receive a competitive $2,500 scholarship each fall and spring to help pay student fees, wherein the out of state tuition and fees are also waived. Professional Development funds are available. A furnished, air-conditioned, one bedroom apartment within the assigned residence complex is provided at no expense, including utilities, small kitchen unit, local telephone service, internet access, Caller I.D., Call Waiting, and basic cable television. A meal plan is provided to Graduate Assistants for REAP (2) while the dining halls are in service. Reserved parking is available upon the individual purchase of a campus parking permit. Professional development funds are also available.

5 University Student Housing Professional Staff Pet Policy The type of pet that will be allowed would include what is reasonably consider a "typical" household pet. Staff may have one (1) pet of the following nature: One Indoor Cat or One Indoor Dog or (No more than 40lbs-Must be considered a friendly breed ) Fish Tank (up to 25 gallons) The RLC/GHC/GA will be expected to complete TTU Housing Pet Application and pay a partially refundable pet deposit in the amount of $500 before acquiring said pet. Staff members are expected to maintain the health and hygiene of the pet on a daily basis Pet owners must ensure their pet has been vaccinated for Rabies. Rabies vaccination must be completed within 30 days of acquiring the pet. Additional expectations and policies apply and may be provided upon request. University Student Housing Professional Staff Partner Policy A valid marriage license must be presented by the official position start date to the Manager of Recruitment and Staff Orientation.
