3 Philanthropic Giving Philanthropy is part of who the American Legion is as an organization. Our organization was founded on four pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. We are asking all Legionnaires to consider a gift to this effort. It is the National Convention Corporation of Minnesota s intention to raise funding to present philanthropic gifts to each of the funds below, which fit within our founding four pillars. A separate fund for the Beginning the Second Century of Service Campaign has been created through The American Legion Minnesota Foundation, a organization. Gifts to this effort are tax-deductible for individuals. One hundred percent of philanthropic contributions will support The American Legion funds throughout Minnesota. Below is the list of initiatives: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation «Hospitalized Vets The purpose of this fund is to create a more comfortable hospital stay for Veterans. The US Department of Veterans Affairs has restrictions on how they spend federal dollars. Often, comfort items such as books, movies and toiletries are not included. Funds for this program are allocated to VA Hospitals to distribute these items to patients. Veterans who need to spend the holiday in our VA Hospitals greatly appreciate various items that we provide. «Nurses Scholarship This program assures that those providing the care to our veterans are the best educated and trained that they can be. The Minnesota American Legion Nurses Training Grant Program financially assists those engaged in the medical profession at selected Veterans Medical Centers or Minnesota Veterans Homes to upgrade and improve their qualifications through pursuit of further education at any recognized school of instruction in the medical field. «Veteran Assistance The purpose of this fund is to provide financial assistance to Minnesota Veterans and their families not already funded from traditional revenue sources. Minnesota has a plethora of outstanding assistance programs available to veterans through many groups and organizations, yet there are times when a veteran may not qualify for assistance for various reasons. Through The Minnesota American Legion s Veterans Assistance program, our service officers will interview and assist a veteran and their family to determine eligibility without numerous restrictions or long time delays. Financial assistance is provided for rent, utilities or temporary lodging. Eligible veterans and families can be supported immediately in a time of great need. «Rehab Veterans Outdoor This program provides outdoor opportunities for Minnesota Veterans. Individuals who are eligible include those with disabilities that limit them from participating in outdoor activities. Through this program we cover all costs to the veteran in relation to lodging, meals and professional guides. We have several annual state level events such as an Ely Minnesota fishing trip, Camp Ripley and Mille Lacs fishing events, as well as deer and turkey hunts at Camp Ripley. These opportunities are important in that they provide an outlet for veterans to relax and enjoy Minnesota s great outdoors, which in itself can have a healing affect to those who may have felt shut off from the outdoors because of their disabilities. National Security «ROTC Scholarship One of the American Legion s four founding pillars is ensuring that we maintain a strong national defense. The ROTC programs in Minnesota s higher education institutions strongly support this value. Through this program we provide college scholarships to students participating in the military through ROTC programs. Americanism «Minnesota Boys State Minnesota American Legion Boys State is a week-long experience of learning and actively participating in Minnesota government at the local, county and state levels. The attendees receive instruction, mentoring and guidance from Minnesota State Legislators throughout the week. They will draft legislation, hold hearings and move bills through the legislative process. At the end of the week, participants will have elected city, county and state officers, as well as a Boys State Governor who will go onto represent Minnesota at Boys Nation in Washington DC. While in DC, the highlight of their week will include a meeting with the President of The United States. Additionally, these individuals become

4 eligible for the chance to be awarded a $20,000 Samsung scholarship for undergraduate studies. Many of our Minnesota state legislators, as well as national legislative leaders are products of The American Legion Boys State program. Boys State also serves as a springboard for many individuals looking to attend a military academy. «American Legion Baseball The purpose of American Legion Baseball is to give young men an opportunity to develop their skills, personal fitness, leadership qualities, and to have fun. The top teams in each state go through a playoff process and eventually on to The American Legion World Series, which is held each year in Shelby, North Carolina. Minnesota is proud to have one of the strongest American Legion Baseball programs in the nation and to be home of World Series Championship teams. Children & Youth «Oratorical Scholarship Each year The American Legion Minnesota Department holds contests for students in oratory. The four finalists in The American Legion Department of Minnesota Contest receive scholarships which may be used to attend any post-secondary educational institution in the United States. The Oratorical Program is a shining example of mentoring and helping our young leaders of tomorrow. «American Legion Memorial The purpose of this scholarship, sponsored by The American Legion Department of Minnesota, is to provide financial assistance to students furthering their education in any Minnesota university, college, vocational school, or other accredited institution of higher education, or in states with Minnesota reciprocity. «Boy Scout Council Assistance The Minnesota American Legion assists The Boy Scouts of America in communities across the state. This fund provides financial assistance to scouting units for activities and helps keep scouting in Minnesota strong and vibrant. Our posts Halls serve as open meeting places for Boy Scout programs. «Legacy Scholarship The Legacy Scholarship was created in 2001, following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to support the children of fallen post-9/11 service members. Beginning in 2017, The American Legion will expand the scholarship to include children of VA-rated, post-9/11 veterans with a disability of 50 percent or higher. The Federal Veterans Affairs education assistance available is not enough to cover the high cost of education. This program helps fill the gap.
