B1: 7TH ANNUAL CORE4 STEM PROGRAM - November 1-5, 2016 Latina Day - Tuesday, November 1 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Freeman Program Hall Latino Day - Wednesday, November 2 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Freeman Program Hall Family Day - Saturday, November 5 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. UTSA (Main Campus) St. Philip s College (MLK Campus) San Antonio College (Scobee Education Center) Palo Alto College Our Lady of the Lake University

Dear Supporter, San Antonio has an important gap to fill in the workforce areas of science, technology, engineer, and mathematics (STEM). Hispanics make up 20 percent of the nation s youth population, yet only 2 percent of the STEM workforce is Hispanic, according to recent data from the U.S. Dept. of Education. Nationally, only 12% of Hispanics in 2009, graduated with a 2-year degree in STEM and only 8% graduated with a 4-year degree in STEM. In a city that is the up-and-coming leader in cybersecurity, military STEM careers, and other STEM-focused workforce needs, one thing is certain: we need change. For six years, the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has hosted the largest STEM Conference in San Antonio: the Annual CORE4 STEM Program. Now in its 7th year, this Program is a great effort to inspire our young San Antonio students to explore future careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This year s CORE4 STEM Program will be held on November 1-5, 2016 during San Antonio STEM Week, another tradition initiated by the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the City of San Antonio. The 7th Annual CORE4 STEM Program Program consists of a Latina Day (all girls), Latino Day (all boys), and Family Day where students are joined by their parents and younger siblings on a college campus, often for the first time. This enlightening Program will bring together more than 5,000 middle school students from five inner-city school districts to experience hands-on, interactive ways to enhance their educational attainment in STEM. The majority of the students come from South San, Harlandale, Southwest, Edgewood, and San Antonio Independent School Districts, the districts with the most significant educational attainment issues. The students invited to the Program are those in need of the greatest STEM push. These students will become San Antonio s future workforce and determine the future economic success of this region and our nation. This unique Program involves local San Antonio corporations, businesses, governmental agencies, and institutions of higher-education. This presents a personal opportunity for students to see the many different types of STEM opportunities and careers that are available to them in the future. We encourage you to support this very important effort. Thank you for your kind consideration. Sincerely, Ramiro A. Cavazos President & CEO San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Dr. Raul Rudy Reyna Chairman, Education Committee San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

B1: Mission To increase awareness and interest of middle school students in college and STEM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). DESCRIPTION Our 7th Annual CORE4 STEM Program will bring together more than 5,000 middle school students from at-risk school districts including: Harlandale ISD, South San ISD, Edgewood ISD, Southwest ISD, and San Antonio ISD. The program is a weeklong Program which includes Latina Day (all girls), Latino Day (all boys), and Family Day (where students can bring their families with them while they learn about STEM at area institutes of higher education). Students will experience ways to enhance their educational attainment in STEM by engaging in hands-on sessions taught by local community leaders. Since the original AT&T Grant to kick start this program was awarded in 2009, many San Antonio business and education leaders have stepped up to teach sessions for our students. Past presenters have included: Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas, AT&T, Rackspace, CPS Energy, Time Warner Cable, Boeing, Whataburger, the United States Navy, NASA, FIRST Robotics, Geekdom, Alamo Colleges, the University of the Incarnate Word, St. Mary s University, Texas A&M San Antonio, The University of Texas at San Antonio, San Antonio Public Library, Girls Inc., Bot Shop, Discover Engineering, the Texas Alliance of Minorities in Engineering (TAME), Taco Cabana, Google Fiber, and many more! STUDENTS CHOSEN TO PARTICIPATE Since 1929, the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, America s first Hispanic Chamber, has represented the interests of all small business owners who have needed a strong voice to earn an equal share of the American dream. With the conception of the CORE4 STEM Program in 2009, the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce strategically targeted the five school districts who demonstrated the highest at-risk/at need populations. These 7th and 8th grade student participants from Harlandale ISD, South San ISD, Edgewood ISD, Southwest ISD, and San Antonio ISD will become San Antonio s future workforce and determine our future economic success. Through this program, we impact more than 5,000 students. With the support of former Mayor Julián Castro (our current U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development) and Congressman Joaquin Castro, this Program has become an annual tradition in which San Antonio dedicates the week getting students excited about STEM pathways. This tradition has been continued on by Mayor Ivy R. Taylor and the City of San Antonio.

San Antonio STEM Week In 2013, Mayor Julián Castro read the official City of San Antonio STEM Week Proclamation on the steps of City Hall. This partnership led by the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is focused on developing more San Antonio students to become the next generation of STEM professionals and entrepreneurs. Every year since, we have partnered with the City of San Antonio to continue the Proclamation Tradition for San Antonio STEM Week. I am or will be the first in my immediate family to go to college % % %

The CORE4 STEM Week Every year, the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce hosts the Annual CORE4 STEM Program to bring together more than 5,000 low-income 7th and 8th graders from five inner-city school districts to experience ways they can enhance their educational attainment through careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through hands-on STEM sessions and workshops. The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce invests in our youth as they will become the future workforce of San Antonio and determine our future economic success. Past Keynote Speakers at the CORE4 STEM Program include: Discoverer of the Titanic Bob Ballard, Astronaut Dr. Bernard Harris, Astronaut Jose Hernandez, CEO of Conceptual MindWorks Elaine Mendoza, Neurosurgeon Dr. David Jimenez (UT Health Science Center), CEO of Webhead Janie Gonzalez, Rocket Scientist Shayla Rivera, NASA Flight Trainer Debbie Ramos, 9th Grader and Creator of the App We-Walk Estrella Hernandez, NASA International Space Station Ground Controller Dorothy Ruiz-Martinez, Miss Latina San Antonio & Future Biomedical Engineer Alyssa Salinas, and many others. The 7th Annual CORE4 STEM Program is set to occur on November 1-5, For more details on how to become a sponsor, host 85% of students enjoyed last year s Program a workshop, or register your family, please contact Pauline Rubio, Vice President of Education & Leadership, at pauliner@sahcc.org or (210) The Program motivated 74% of students that participated to seek out a STEM career Mayor Ivy R. Taylor and other community leaders gather to celebrate and launch the Hispanic Chamber s San Antonio STEM Week Proclamation at City Hall.

The CORE4 STEM Program Dr. Bernard Harris, NASA Astronaut, serves as a Keynote Speaker at the Annual CORE4 STEM Program. He spends quality time with the students from Bernard Harris Middle School in San Antonio. The Hispanic Chamber hosts a Latina Day (all girls) and a separate Latino Day (all boys) which bring in 5,000 7th and 8th grade students from inner-city San Antonio school districts. Past workshop topics have included: Engineering by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas, Inc. Food Microbiology & Plant Engineering by H-E-B Energy Sources & Solar Power by CPS Energy Burgers & Technology by Whataburger Geeks Rule! by Rackspace, the Open Cloud Company Pre-Freshman Engineering Program (PREP) by UTSA Zoology, Biology, & Animal Science by the SA Zoo Forensic Science by the San Antonio Police Department Google Goggles and Fiber Technology by Google & many more!

DID YOU KNOW? As of 2012, STEM professionals on average earn 26% more than non-stem professionals. According to recent U.S. Census Bureau data, Hispanics comprise only 6% of the STEM workforce. As of 2012, the average U.S. salary was $43,460 compared to the average STEM salary of $77,880. Many students at the STEM Program see career futures with NASA, the military, Toyota, H-E-B, and Coca Cola. After the Program, 80% of girls and 86% of boys were more interested in a STEM Career. 41% of students would recommend this Program to their peers STEM AREA OF INTEREST 37% 43% Girls have more of an interest in science careers. 17% 27% 24% 32% Boys are more interested in technology and engineering careers. 12% 8% Science Technology Engineering Math Day 1 - Girls Day 2 - Boys

Bright Spots in Hispanic Education In honor of the 25th Anniversary of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, a national call was made for nominations of programs, models, organizations, or initiatives supporting Latino educational achievement and excellence. Bright Spots in Hispanic Education recognizes these honorees for their ongoing efforts to help close the achievement gap. By acknowledging and uplifting the work of these Bright Spots, the Initiative seeks to spark innovation and encourage collaboration between honorees and stakeholders focused on similar issues, resulting in increased support for the educational attainment of the Hispanic community.

In February 2016, The Hispanic Leadership Development Foundation, a subsidiary of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, was proud to receive a Bright Spot in Hispanic Education award for its annual CORE4 STEM Program. As San Antonio s economy diversifies to include more innovation and technology jobs, we must continue to expand STEM education opportunities so that local students are prepared to join our city s workforce and drive San Antonio s future growth and prosperity. U.S. Congressman Joaquin Castro, District 20
