Background Statement Alice Lloyd College is named for its founder, Alice Spencer Geddes Lloyd, who came to the Eastern Kentucky mountains from her native home in Boston. Early in her career, she was a writer for local newspapers and periodicals. In 1902, Miss Geddes was publisher and editor of "The Cambridge Press," the first publication in America with an all-female staff. Eastern Kentucky was sorely lacking in educational opportunities when Alice Lloyd arrived at Ivis, Kentucky, in She saw the need for regional uplift and felt that through education, the Appalachian people could have a brighter future. Armed with an invitation from a local resident, she came to Pippa Passes to teach the children. Mrs. Lloyd knew that she was among some of the brightest and best students that could be found anywhere. To ensure that no student would be turned away because of financial difficulty, she instituted a mandatory student work program. Mrs. Lloyd secured the success of her mission through generous financial support of her friends on the east coast, voluntary teachers, and "faith as firm as a rock and aspirations as high as the mountains." Mrs. Lloyd's initial efforts at the Ivis Community Center in Knott County, Kentucky, were to provide health care, educational services, and agricultural improvements to the region. In 1917, Mrs. Lloyd, accompanied by her mother, moved to Caney Creek at the behest of local resident Abisha Johnson, who offered her land on which to build a school. Alice Lloyd's dictum, "The leaders are here," became the inspirational impetus for what is now Alice Lloyd College. She was joined three years later by June Buchanan, a native of Syracuse, New York. Sharing Alice Lloyd's mission, Miss Buchanan served the College until her death in 1988 at the age of 100. Together, Alice Lloyd and June Buchanan chartered Caney Junior College in Following the death of Mrs. Lloyd in 1962, there have been five presidents: William S. Hayes -( ); Jerry C. Davis ( ); M. Siebert ( ); and Joe Alan Stepp ( Present) Impact Statement Alice Lloyd College has recently been ranked #1 in America for graduating students with the least amount of average debt; ranked #2 in America in Student Selectivity (tied with Harvard and Stanford Universities) and ranked in the TOP 35 colleges in the nation in alumni giving. Forty-two percent of our alumni gave during our fiscal year. The College's new Business and Technology Center which is housed in the completely restored Commodore Slone Building opened in Fifty-three recent graduates are receiving assistance in their pursuit of advanced degrees or professional programs through the "Caney Scholars Program." 4 CEO/Executive Director Statement Since 1923, Alice Lloyd College has provided mountain students with the opportunity to earn a quality, character-based education regardless of financial circumstances. From its inception, ALC has never turned away any student because of the inability to pay. The cost of tuition for students within our 108-county service area is guaranteed, ensuring that these future leaders of Appalachia pay absolutely no out-of-pocket tuition costs. As a liberal arts institution, the College places a supreme value on educating the whole person. ALC's unique character-based, leadership education emphasizes service to others while providing opportunities for students to develop a keen intellect, a strong work ethic, and outstanding leadership skills. This educational background gives ALC graduates a competitive edge in professional and graduate schools; in fact, approximately 95% of recent ALC graduates who have applied to such programs have been accepted. 6 Impact Impact Goals Alice Lloyd College's ultimate goal is to provide educated leadership for the Central Appalachian region it serves. When a student graduates from Alice Lloyd College, he or she leaves with a degree recognized for its academic value. With a liberal arts degree from ALC, one will not only gain a deeper understanding for the arts and sciences, but will also be educated to become a lasting leader in one s community. Through medicine, law, politics, education, and business, our graduates touch the lives around them. Challenging our students to look within themselves, we give them the abilities and knowledge needed to shape their college, their community, and their world. At Alice Lloyd, an education is much larger than a degree it s studying abroad, serving on mission trips in Central America, or interning in Washington, D.C. It s the opportunity to interact with professors one-on-one. It s a chance to be a step ahead of the pack when entering the job market armed with valuable work experience and references gained through the Student Work Program. It s the opportunity to receive graduate and professional scholarships to the University of Kentucky and other schools through the Caney Cottage Scholarship Program. But more than anything, it s the chance to seize the day, take advantage of every single opportunity that presents itself, and take hold of one s future. Alice Lloyd students are accepted to many graduate and professional schools nationwide and hired by major employers throughout Appalachia; many schools and businesses recruit here. People are often surprised that such academic success can come from a small, private college in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky. But it comes as no surprise to us. With faculty from highly regarded institutions that have included Harvard, Yale, Cornell, and Penn State, it s easy to understand where our academic strength begins. Strategies Alice Lloyd College provides a challenging, character-based education to students from 108 mountain counties in Central Appalachia. Over 40% of our faculty hold Ph.D. degrees. The student-teacher ratio is 19:1. In addition to the liberal arts program, students are required to participate the Student Work Program where they develop life skills such as time management, responsibility, leadership and strong moral character. All students are required to take a leadership class where they are introduced to the traits and qualities which indicate leadership. Students are expected to attend classes, obey rules, adhere to a dress code, honor curfew, and attend required convocation programs throughout the year. Graduates are encouraged to apply for the Caney Scholars Program where they are eligible to receive assistance with professional and graduate programs beyond Alice Lloyd College. Some receive rent- and utility-free housing in the College-owned residence hall on the campus of the University of Kentucky, while those who attend other universities receive limited monetary support. Finally, students are encouraged to remain in their mountain communities and serve in positions of leadership to help improve and uplift the Central Appalachian region. Capabilities Alice Lloyd College is fiscally sound and has no long-term debt. Buildings are not constructed until funding is secure. The endowment is growing at a steady pace and is a priority of the Board of Trustees and executive management. Students from the service area are guaranteed that all tuition costs will be met, leaving them absolutely no outof-pocket costs for tuition. This guarantee is made possible through scholarships, grants, and the Student Work Program. Private foundations and individuals across America support Alice Lloyd College's mission in Central Appalachia. The College does not solicit nor accept any direct federal funding. Degree offerings are regularly reviewed and adjusted to offer students marketable degrees which can be used in the Central Appalachian region. Most recently, degrees have been added in kinesiology (for physical therapy), sociology, and a dual degree in nursing (in colaboration with the University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky University). A special education degree will be added in the fall of

7 Indicators Improvement in the economy of Central Appalachian counties where our graduates reside and work will be the main indicator. The Appalachian Regional Commission publishes statistics annually, including higher education rates, poverty levels, and unemployment, as well as overall economic stability. Another measure of success is the College's ranking in national publication,s such as U.S. News & World Report, in areas such as Great Schools, Great Prices; Graduating Students with the Least Amount of Debt; Alumni Giving Percentage; Fiscal Responsibility; and Selectivity. Alice Lloyd College has consistently received high rankings in all of these areas over the past 15 years. Progress The College has produced teachers (preschool, primary, secondary, and college professors, as well as principals, superintendents, and school administrators), business professionals (banking, management, entrepreneurs, etc.), medical professionals (doctors, dentists, nurses, physical therapists, pharmacists, etc.), politicians, social workers, and many others who have assumed positions of leadership in the Appalachian communities served by Alice Lloyd College. High school and college education rates are gradually climbing, poverty rates are somewhat lower, and economic status has improved in some counties. Unemployment is still high, but mainly due to dwindling coalrelated jobs. Population is gradually declining as more and more young adults leave the region to find work, a problem that has plagued Appalachia for decades. Many who earn higher educations are among those who leave; however, 83% of Alice Lloyd College graduates stay in Appalachia and use their skills to serve the mountain people. 7

8 Programs Programs General Support Description Alice Lloyd College is a not-for-profit, private, 4-year college serving Central Appalachia. All full-time students pay absolutely no out-of-pocket costs for tuition, and most graduate debt free. Annual operating expenses are only partially met by endowment earnings, student Pell grants and student work-study funds. The balance must be raised from the private sector. Budget 2,100,000 Population Served,, Scholarship Program Description Every full-time student attending Alice Lloyd College receives one or more forms of finacial assistance. Scholarship funds make up the difference between Pell grants and work-study to cover tuition so that no full-time student pays any out-of-pocket costs for tuition. General scholarships are funded through annual gifts (renewable each year). Endowed scholarships are established as permanent funds where only the annual earnings are used to provide student scholarships. Donors are welcome to name scholarships and create specific or general guidelines for determining annual recipients. Budget 1,900,000 Population Served,, The June Buchanan School Description The June Buchanan School is a private, K-12 school located on the campus of Alice Lloyd College. With a 9-1 student-teacher ratio, JBS is known for its small class size and individual attention. The School has outstanding academic programs, and 100% of its student graduate with high school diplomas. Ninety-nine percent of JBS graduates go on to college. 9 Caney Cottage Scholarship Program Description Alice Lloyd College supports a select number of scholarly students who plan to attend graduate or professional schools upon completion of their programs at ALC. The Caney Cottage Scholarship Program provides qualifying students with assistance in such programs at the University of Kentucky and other universities. Caney Scholars attending UK are provided rent-free living quarters in the H. N. and Frances C. Berger Residence Hall (Caney Cottage), just a few blocks from the UK campus. Scholars attending other universities are granted cash scholarships toward tuition. The prestigious Caney Cottage Scholarships are offered on a competitive basis. Applicants must have high academic standards, be of strong character, and show potential for leadership. There is an unwritten pledge to return to Appalachia and serve in leadership roles after the completion of graduate and professional programs. Budget Population Served,, Presidential Scholars Program Description Category The Alice Lloyd College Presidential Scholar's Program provides academic scholarships for a select number of students from our 108 Central Appalachian county service area who have a commitment to service in the Appalachian region. The scholarship covers the full cost of education while attending ALC, provides money toward books, and ensures continued assistance throughout graduate and/or professional school. The amount of assistance while in graduate and/or professional school varies depending on the course of study and the school of attendance. The additional benefit of providing quality leadership and positive change for the Appalachian region is the philosophy of our founder, Alice Geddes Lloyd, and continues to be the vision of President Stepp, as well. Most of our programs focus on scholarships which cover the cost of educating students, mainly during the pursuit of 4-year college degrees. In addition to bachelor degrees, outstanding students, our "Brightest and Best," have opportunities for financial assistance with advanced degrees and professional training through the Caney Cottage Scholarship Program or the Distinguished Scholars Program. The successes of these programs are unquestionable in the hundreds of educators, business professionals, doctors, dentists, pharmacists, lawyers, and engineers that have been assisted through one of more of these programs. 9

President Stepp completed his studies at the College Business Management Institute at the University of Kentucky, studied at Ohio State University, and also attended a Harvard Seminar for New Presidents in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Campaign Purpose Campus Center -A new facility to serve as the main student recreational zone, including two gymnasiums (to replace existing 50-year-old facility), Health and Physical Education Classrooms and Faculty Offices, Student Lounge, Weight Room, Exercise Room, Equipment Storage Areas, Locker Rooms, Game Rooms, Vending Room and Concessions/Eating Area. A pledge for the facility has been secured. Funding for furnishing is still needed. 19 Comments CEO Comments Fiscal responsibility is a prime objective for Alice Lloyd College. The College has operated in the black for the past 34 years and has no long-term debt. Approximately 50% of general operating funds must be raised from the private sector on an annual basis. Projects are begun only after the funding has been secured, and $.89 of every $1.00 donated to the College is used directly for educating students.
