My name is Christa Rupple and I will be one of the interns working at Bowling Green High School this year. I am currently working on my degree in School Counseling at BGSU and plan on graduating this Spring. Previously I have worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Ohio as a case manager for their school-based mentoring program. I hope to use my skills and experiences to help students at BGHS with any needs that they may have. I will be available Mondays and Tuesdays until 3:30 and Fridays until 11:30 for the first half of the year. My door is always open, so please do not hesitate to come see me if you would like to discuss any issues including school, career development, or want to talk about something personal. I look forward to the school year and meeting everyone! Ashley Rozelle earned her Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies with a concentration in Interpersonal Communications from BGSU in 2009, and is now pursuing a Masters of Education in School Counseling. She is expected to graduate from the program in the Spring of Ashley has over seven years of experience working with the adolescent population within the BG community through the organization of Young Life, and has also served the Wood County community as a caseworker at Job and Family Services for over five years as well. Ashley is also currently employed with Brookside Church here in Bowling Green, and serves as the Director of Children's Ministries. In her free time Ashley enjoys hanging out with her family, cooking and watching The Ohio State Buckeyes. When you need to change your schedule, it will be necessary for you to see your assigned counselor. However, if you have a personal issue, and feel more comfortable working with another counselor in our office, we are very understanding of those situations and want you to feel comfortable discussing those type of issues with whomever you feel best. We urge you to keep up to date with the Counselor s Corner, especially since we will only be doing these newsletters one time each quarter. We encourage each parent and student to sign-up to receive this newsletter via . Much valuable information is shared in this format, and is an important link to the Counseling Staff. We will do our best to keep them short and more readable. We need parents and students to read this. Sign-up on the Guidance Webpage. Do it today! 2 PENTA The Penta Career Center continues to be an excellent opportunity available to our students. (We have nearly 100 of our BGHS students attending Penta this year.) Penta has a state-of-the-art facility that can provide students with real-world career experiences in thirty career fields. Penta also offers challenging college prep classes that academically prepare students for college. Students graduating from Penta will receive a BGHS diploma as well as occupational certificates/ licensure from the State of Ohio that will give them a head start on their careers. Many Penta programs also offer opportunities to obtain college credits simply by completing the program! PENTA APPLICATIONS Sophomores or juniors interested in Penta should come down to guidance to learn how to apply. All applications are now done online. We can assist you with that process here at BGHS. (Continued on page 4 - Penta Applications ) Page 2 Counselor s Corner SOPHOMORE EXPLORATORY PROGRAM While the typical student will attend Penta during their junior and senior year, Penta now offers the sophomore Exploratory program for sophomores! The sophomore exploratory program was created to help those students who do not know what specific career field they are interested in. Thus, instead of learning about a single career field as juniors and seniors would, sophomore Penta students pick two career clusters and participate in all the careers in those clusters throughout the year. The goal is that the student will know exactly what career program they want to enroll in for their junior and senior years. EXPLORE PENTA DAY All sophomores will take a field trip to Penta on November 7. The sophomores have already selected a couple of programs that they would like to visit, and will spend half a day touring the building and the programs they have selected. COLLEGE APPLICATIONS If you plan to attend college next fall, NOW is time to apply. You should plan to send your completed applications in during the months of October and November. While every college has it s own application and scholarship deadlines (which you should check), most colleges set their deadlines for their automatic freshman scholarships during these months. Thus, missing these dates could cost you thousands of dollars in lost scholarship money!! YOU are responsible for meeting all college deadlines!!! 1. Get the college application: Although you can request paper copies from the college, almost all colleges prefer you fill it out on-line. Go to the college s website to find the application. 2. Determine what the college wants: The application will list all the materials it wants (transcripts, recommendations, essays, etc.). You must submit all the materials they require, but do not send extra materials. They will not use them! 3. Go to guidance office: All colleges will ask for a high school transcript. See Mrs. Codding for a transcript request form. Give Mrs. Codding three days to process your request. Do not come in the day before you need a transcript and expect it to be done in time! 4.Fill out a guidance packet (if needed): Many colleges will ask for letters of recommendation, which normally you can have any non-family member write. However, if you would like a counselor to write you one, complete a guidance packet and turn it in to your counselor. Give counselors TWO WEEKS to write your letter!!! Counselors write many letters of recommendation and need time to complete them. Again, do not come in last-minute and expect it to be done in time!! 5. Send in the application: Once you have all the required materials, send them in to the college. STUDENT / PARENT / TEACHER CONFERENCES...are coming up Oct. 30 & Nov. 1. In an effort to keep the lines of communication open between home and school the district offers these two late afternoon/ evening sessions Tuesday, Oct. 30, and Thursday, Nov. 1 from 4:00-7:30 p.m. All appointments should be made ahead of time by printing the attached form and returning it to Mrs. Cullen in the main office or at rcullen@bgcs.k12.oh.us or ext Deadline is Mon., 10/15/12. Parent Internet Viewer (PIV) We want to remind you to take advantage of the Parent Internet Viewer (PIV) which allows parents and students to proactively monitor grades and attendance from any computer with Internet access. A letter was mailed/given to each family at the beginning of school, which includes a confidential PIV password and directions for using this secure site. The administration does change the passwords each school year for security purposes so your code is different from last year. PIV is a great help to parents, students, teachers and counselors! REMEMBER TO SHARE THE INFO! Never miss another announcement or newsletter! You and your high schooler may subscribe to these newsletters by going to t h e c i t y s c h o o l s w e b s i t e nggreenhighschool/guidance/guidance News and Subscribe to the newsletter. This is a FREE service to you!

3 Athletic Eligibility Athletic eligibility for each quarter is determined by the student s academic performance during the preceding quarter. A student must have passed five major subject areas in the first quarter in order to be eligible for second quarter sports. Please speak to Mr. Vannett, Dean of Students/ Athletic Director, about questions regarding eligibility. Students and parents are reminded that they are ultimately responsible for making certain that they are following the guidelines for athletic eligibility. PSAT Test The PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) will be administered to interested juniors and sophomores on Wednesday, October 17th. This test is required for juniors who wish to compete for a National Merit Scholarship. There is a $15.00 fee for the test. Students may register for the test by bringing a check (payable to BGHS) or cash to Mrs. Codding by Fri., October 12th. Students may learn more about the test and see sample questions at Also pick up a brochure: The Official Student Guide to the PSAT/NMSQT when you register for the test. Page 3 Students are encouraged to complete the on line practice tests so that the total time on the test day can be spent answering questions. It is important to immediately produce top output on this scholarship eligibility assessment. The test includes a Writing Skills section, which is 30 minutes long. The two verbal and two math sections are 25 minutes each. Actual testing time for the PSAT/NMSQT is 2 hours, 10 minutes. Sophomores are encouraged to talk to their counselor before signing up to take this test. HOBY Seminar HOBY is a prestigious 4-day leadership seminar held in the summer. Only one sophomore can represent our school at this conference, so naturally the selection process is highlycompetitive. Applications are available in guidance and must be turned by October 12th. Late applications will not be accepted. Also, the local Kiwanis Club has teamed with the high school and will pay the entire registration! Thus, we can offer this excellent opportunity at no cost to the student! For more information, visit the HOBY website at: PLAN Test Sophomores will take the PLAN test on Thursday, December 6 at BGHS. The PLAN test is developed by ACT and offers students a chance to practice for the actual ACT test. The PLAN test also has a career inventory section which helps students identify and achieve their career goals. The cost of the test is covered entirely by the Bowling Green School District, and students can expect to receive their results during the second semester. Register Now with NCAA NAIA If you are a senior who is planning to participate in Division I or II sports as a college freshman, fall is the time to register to be certified by the NCAA Initial- Eligibility Clearinghouse. You must do this in order to qualify for college athletics. You can register beginning in October. The NCAA also has new eligibility rules relating to the required high school core courses for student-athletes. You can register and check out the rules at the student information page at w eb1.n ca a.o r g /eligib i l i t y c enter/ common/ You also can read "The Guide for College- Bound Student-Athletes" at the website, or you can order a paper copy of the guide by calling The guide provides a summary of the rules and regulations in an easy-to-read form. Guidelines relate to recruiting, eligibility, financial aid and college freshman eligibility requirements for Divisions I and II. The NAIA Eligibility Center is responsible for determining the NAIA eligibility of firsttime student-athletes. The NAIA and NCAA are two separate associations, with two different sets of rules and certification p r o c e sse s. Regis ter o n l ine a t Also, when you register for the ACT or SAT, include the NAIA Eligibility Center (9876) on the list of places test scores should be sent. You will need to complete a transcript request form to have your transcript sent to the NAIA Eligibility Center. Registration for students is $60. Also, please see your counselor to determine if the schools that you are interested in attending are a part of the NAIA before completing the registration process.

4 Page 4 PENTA Applications (Cont. from pg. 2) Penta sets a date early in the second semester for their first priority applications. All applications received before this date are given equal consideration. All applications received after this date are taken on a first-come first-serve basis, so be smart and apply early! For more information about applying to Penta, please see your counselor in the Guidance Office. OGT Testing Juniors and Seniors who still have part of the OGT to pass will have 2 opportunities this year to pass the test. The first will be in late October, and the second will be in mid-march. Take advantage of the help from teachers and interventions that we will be offering to students who will be retaking the test this fall. With a little effort, you will pass. Counselor s Corner Morning Announcements You can have the Daily High School Morning Announcements ed to you. Just go to the Bowling Green City School website: Click on Schools, then Bowling Green High School, then Morning Announcements. Follow the directions to Subscribe. If you have any problems or questions, please call Sandy Bauman, secretary in the main office at ext. 0 or her at sbauman@bgcs.k12.oh.us. Peterson s Student Edge At the senior class meeting on Aug. 29, all seniors were asked to sign-up for an account on Peterson s Student Edge. This is a very useful and informational website that allows students to set up a free account to get information on careers, colleges, and PLAN, ACT, PSAT, SAT, and AP tests. The BGHS access code is on a card, (available in the Counseling Office) and is also available on the Guidance Webpage. It is also in this article. We urge all of our students to sign up for an account on this website, where our office posts announcements, reminders, and information about upcoming events related to our Counseling Office. Be sure to keep your address updated on this website so you will get the information that we send to you through Peterson s Student Edge. The website is: BGHS access code: JMXJPPVZ Please use this website to help keep updated on important information from the counselors. TEST PREP FOR ACT/SAT/PSAT Can I study for the ACT or SAT? What s the best way to prepare? How important is this test anyway? All legitimate questions and here are some things to consider when answering them. There are some test prep courses to help you prepare for these tests. They are helpful for good students who struggle with multiple-choice tests. However, the best way to prepare for the test is to study hard and do well in your core classes (English, Math, Science). These tests are very important, both for scholarship and college admission. Common sense preparation activities include getting plenty of sleep the night prior to the test, and eating a good breakfast that morning. Test prep sources include: Kaplan: KAP-TEST or (cost is $499) (cost is $19.95/ year) Carol G. Hall, Inc.(info available in guidance office) or call (cost is $475) Sylvan Learning Center (Bowling Green Office) (cost is $650) Begins??
