That first venture gave Kevin a taste for life as an entrepreneur, I realized I liked working for myself, it didn t feel like work to me. Bringing big ideas to life As a high school senior from Cambridge, Nova Scotia, Kevin Robinson had no plans to become an entrepreneur. Cut to four years later and Kevin is on track to become one of Nova Scotia s most promising business leaders. During his second year of studying Business Administration at the Mount, Kevin placed first at the Elevator Pitch Competition organized by the Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development (CEED). Kevin presented the winning concept of a business he had launched called The Helping Hand; a servicebased business that assisted with household jobs requiring physical labour. MY PROFESSORS KNOW ME BY NAME. Kevin has since launched two other business initiatives: Distractions, a publication that provides advertising space for businesses to target community members and Finishing Touch Auto Care, a car detailing service with a strong client base. Honouring Women: The Women s Wall Of Honour The Women s Wall of Honour celebrates the Mount s rich legacy of advancing the lives of women. To be located at the entrance of the Margaret Norrie McCain Centre for Teaching, Learning and Research, this living memorial will be the only one of its kind in Canada. The names and stories of women from all walks of life will be featured in a garden-like setting, celebrating the contributions of women to business, public policy, family life, academia, the arts, sciences, and community. The helpful, friendly atmosphere at the Mount made my university decision for me. 12 TEACHING AND RESEARCH Mount professors are leading the way in research of provincial, national, and international significance. In a university with small classes, that means you ll have the opportunity to benefit from and participate in research that s helping to change our world. Whether it s studying the vertebrae skeleton in a biology lab, developing new food products to combat child obesity, or travelling to Ghana to study witchcraft trials, the Mount gives you the chance to put theory and knowledge into practice, and to learn from our best. Four Canada Research Chairs $ in external research funding per faculty $ Tri-Council funding, (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR) Facilities working for you As part of a recent $3.4 million investment in new facilities, the Mount recently upgraded our biology and chemistry labs. In 2013, construction will begin on the new Margaret Norrie McCain Centre for Teaching, Learning and Research. The McCain Centre will house some of the Mount s signature academic programs, and will combine state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly technology and classroom space in a building dedicated entirely to women a first of its kind in Canada. Jay Kelly (pictured above) is in the fourth year of his BSc, with a major in chemistry. Last summer he was awarded a grant from the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada to research molecular imaging of the brain. The project has the potential to revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer s. 13 Dr. Tamara Franz-Odendaal EMPOWERING GIRLS IN SCIENCE Atlantic NSERC Chair, Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Associate Professor, Biology Mount Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Tamara Franz-Odendaal is actively developing role model science and engineering networks for girls across Atlantic Canada. As the Atlantic NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering, Dr. Franz-Odendaal connects thousands of junior high and secondary girls with mentors through robotics camps, science retreats, webinars, and class visits, and works hands-on with many Mount students in her biology lab. Originally from a small farming community in South Africa, she has braved Canadian winters for nine years and successfully balances her research career with family life. Dr. Janice Keefe MAKING LIFE BETTER FOR SENIORS Canada Research Chair, Aging and Caregiving Policy Professor, Family Studies and Gerontology Janice Keefe is a Professor in the Department of Family Studies and Gerontology at Mount Saint Vincent University and holds appointments at Dalhousie Faculties of Medicine and Graduate Studies. She was recently renewed for a second term as a Canada Research Chair in Aging and Caregiving Policy. In 2006 she was awarded the Lena Isabel Jodrey Chair in Gerontology and appointed Director, Nova Scotia Centre on Aging. Dr. Keefe s research areas are rural elderly, continuing care policy and caregiving, including work and elder care, caregiver assessment and compensation, and human resource issues in home care. Dr. Keefe gave a presentation, Who Cares? Aging Boomers and Caregiving Policy in Canada at the Big Thinking Lectures to the Parliament of Canada in April, Prof. Jonathan Roberts EXPLORING WITCHCRAFT HISTORY IN GHANA Assistant Professor, History Prof. Roberts spent the summer of 2012 conducting field research at the major religious institutions of the Ga people in Accra, Ghana. With the help of two Mount History students, Jenny Davison and Flair Martin, he interviewed elders to record their experiences conducting witchcraft trials at local shrines. The students also digitally photographed 30 volumes of trial records, which date back several decades, in an effort to preserve the documents for future use. Prof. Roberts research was funded by an MSVU Faculty Research Grant and an Endangered Archives Grant from the British Library. Dr. Bohdan Luhovvy TACKLING CHILDHOOD OBESITY Assistant Professor, Applied Human Nutrition Dr. Luhovvy s research explores the health potential of well known traditional food products (such as beans, dairy, and driedfruits) and developing new products from common commodities and novel ingredients in order to tackle chronic health issues such as obesity and diabetes. Recently, Dr. Luhovyy coordinated a multi-institutional research project that showed the benefits of raisins as an after-school snack and received media attention worldwide. He s also worked with Mount Applied Human Nutrition students in regional and national food competitions, such as Mission ImPulsible, a contest to design and create healthy, great-tasting and commercially viable food products from beans, chickpeas or lentils. 13

14 CONNECTED TO OUR COMMUNITY Overlooking the Bedford Basin, the Mount campus is a short 15-minute bus ride from downtown Halifax. Community outreach is a big part of life at the Mount. The University works alongside organizations such as Feed Nova Scotia, the Centre for Women in Business and the United Way to foster the learning experiences of the Mount community. The University recently established its first community garden, providing students and staff with access to sustainably-managed food. Caritas Day: A History of Giving Back Every January, members of the Mount community participate in a day of caring, also known as Caritas Day. In 1951, the Mount found itself searching for a place to go after a devastating fire burnt down the only building on campus at the time. People all over Halifax opened their doors to host students and classroom lectures. The community s response was so inspirational to the Mount community that the Sisters of Charity established Caritas Day to remember these tremendous acts of kindness. Every year on this day, Mount students volunteer with local community organizations such as Feed Nova Scotia, and in 2012, a group travelled to New York City to work with the city s homeless population. It s great to have a mix of professors on campus. Some are true academics and others, like myself, are instructors who also work professionally on a daily basis. With a vibrant international student community from over 50 countries, a range of study abroad programs across the globe, and a wealth of international faculty research, the Mount is your place to develop global connections and to consider your own role as a global citizen. CONNECTED GLOBALLY Live Your World: Student Exchange Program The Mount has 16 student exchange programs spread throughout the world. Take advantage of our linkages and spend a semester in Spain, Russia, Korea, Sweden, Estonia, France, the UK, or Denmark. Spend an intensive few weeks in China as part of the China Summer Institute to learn more about the world s second-largest economy. Develop your leadership, learn a new language, and prepare for an international career while you earn credit toward your degree. The Mount Connects with the World: International Projects The Mount has developed partnerships that are making a real difference around the world. Education faculty Dr. Andrew Manning and Alan Dawe worked with schools in Belize to support teachers to use a child-centred approach to teaching math. Dr. Mary Jane Harkins, also an Education professor, worked with Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya to improve the quality of life for children, youth and vulnerable populations. Celebrate Diversity: International Events Enrich your understanding about our shared world through the Mount s series of annual international events. International Education Week is packed with workshops, keynote speeches, and the acclaimed Multicultural Night. The Mount also recognizes International Development Week (IDW) each February, a chance to give students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to learn more about life in developing countries. A range of other social, academic, and cultural events are held throughout the year. 15

16 ATHLETICS AT THE MOUNT The Mount is a great academic and athletic environment! The small classes help to make it easy to form good relationships with the faculty and other students. The athletics programs and coaching are the best, and because we are a smaller, close-knit school, the student spirit is terrific. Everyone is your friend. Our fi tness centre offers dynamic fi tness classes, personal weight training and fully equipped conditioning centre and gym facilities. Learn Flamenco, Hip Hop or Scottish Dancing. Or try our fantastic Zumba and other dance-inspired exercise classes. It s no cliché: a strong body fuels a strong mind. Yoga, karate, kickboxing, pilates, self-defense or fi tness certifi cations may suit your style. If you have a more competitive side, give our intramural programs a go. The roster includes badminton, basketball, hockey, volleyball, dodgeball and more. Take on your old friends and meet new ones. Allison Sparling, BPR 12 Read Allison s story at msvu.ca/allisonsparling Flexible Learning Flexibility and accessibility are important to our students and the Mount offers more than 250 courses, 10 undergraduate degrees and four graduate degrees online. They are available to all students whether you live in Halifax, across Atlantic Canada, or outside the region. You don t have to be at a distance to take advantage of the convenience. In fact, many on-campus students complete their courses via distance learning. Our learning technologies include an online course management system and web-based virtual classrooms. Online video featured in many courses can be downloaded to your computer or mobile device. No matter the media, you can take your courses with you. For more information visit msvu.ca/distance Co-operative Education As a co-op student, you will have at least one full year of paid work experience, a great resume and an impressive portfolio when you graduate. The first accredited co-op program in the Maritimes, Co-operative Education is a valuable part of the Business Administration, Public Relations and Tourism and Hospitality Management programs. Since 2008, more than 80% of co-op grads have landed a job in their field of study within six months of graduation. Students are able to develop a network of employer contacts and be better prepared for the work force. Co-op students alternate academic terms with a variety of workplace terms with employers from government, private and not-for-profit sectors. 18 The health service staff is sort of the chicken soup department of the university as we try to provide the warm and fuzzy feeling that the students need to help them stay well and focused on their studies. Diane Tinkham, RN, Manager of Health Services STUDENT SERVICES SUPPORTING YOU Diane has been a key member of the Mount staff for nearly 40 years, and during that time, has taken care of literally thousands of students as they deal with the excitement and challenges of starting a university career. Health Services Located on campus, the Mount s Health Services is here to help you get well and stay well. You can feel confident in the private and confidential care you receive. Open to the entire Mount community, including students, faculty, staff, alumnae and surrounding community, there are two doctors and a nurse on staff who offer everything including physical exams, immunizations, treatments of colds and flu and sprains. LifeMark Physiotherapy is also part of Health Services. You will be well taken care of by its massage therapist, physiotherapist and certified pedorthist. They offer treatment of orthopedic injuries, sports injuries and your everyday aches and pains. Supporting Aboriginal Students To better support our aboriginal community, the Mount plans to appoint an aboriginal advisor as well as to provide a dedicated aboriginal student Friendship Centre this year. During October, the Mount will co-host an aboriginal students conference which will bring over 100 indigenous youth and their advisors to campus. COUNSELLING AND DISABILITY SERVICES Counselling Services at the Mount provides free and confidential one-on-one support to all registered Mount students. The Mount is also committed to fostering a culture that is supportive of students with disabilities by providing services to assist with accessing appropriate academic accommodations consistent with their needs. WRITING Centre Need some extra support writing an essay or preparing an assignment? Welcome to the Mount s Writing Resource Centre or WRC, for short. The WRC provides several free services for Mount students, including one-on-one appointments with staff who can help with any writing concerns you might have. 18

Combined, they house two million volumes, all of which are easily accessible to you. Library staff are available to help at the Access Services Desk and via . In addition, many of the Library s resources are available online, with extra help offered via live chat. Within the Library, you will find the zone that suits your mood and your study. The blue zone is quiet; the orange zone is group-work oriented and the red zone is comfy and active. There are perfect places to study, prepare presentations, meet and socialize. Financial Assistance The Financial Aid Office will help you with student loans, lines of credit, bursary applications and budgeting. They administer three types of bursaries at the Mount Entrance, In-Course and Student Works. You will receive your Entrance bursary application in your acceptance package. Through Student Works, students who demonstrate financial need can apply for on-campus positions that are part-time during the academic year and full-time in the summer. These positions are posted online in September and April. If you re an international student, you can work on campus as soon as you arrive and off-campus once you ve studied full-time for six months. 20 RESIDENCE There s something to be said about a place where you can hang out, study or have a few friends over. The Mount s three on-campus residences offer convenience, safety and the comforts of home, including Wi-Fi and a stress-free, all you care to eat dining experience. The Mount has three great options. In Assisi Hall, you will see far and wide thanks to the height of the 12-storey building that overlooks the Bedford Basin and the Halifax skyline. We have socializing and convenience covered too with our kitchenettes, lounge, laundry areas and direct indoor access to the Rosaria Dining Hall. You will feel secure with Assisi s 24-hour security and information desk just downstairs. Traditional single dorm room size: 12 x 9.5 (approximately) The Birches are a group of five roomy townhouses, each with 21 single rooms. It s a co-op environment too, so there s a social network built right in. Each townhouse has Wi-Fi, a lounge, a kitchen, a laundry room and a storage room. Room size: 11 x 10 (approximately) Westwood is a 19+ residence geared for senior and transfer students. Westwood includes mostly four-bedroom fully furnished apartments. Each has a living room, kitchen and two full bathrooms. We ve taken care of Wi-Fi, local phone service and laundry throughout. The best part is all of your bills are covered in one fee! Single dorm room size: 20 x 8.5 (approximately) Apartment-style room size: 13 x 8.5 (approximately) For more information visit This campus is beautiful and it s so easy to get around! I can t wait to start in september! :) One of the best choices I ever made was joining societies that gave me both leadership opportunities, and the chance to just help out when needed. 21 YOU WILL FIND YOUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME CAMPUS LIFE Whether you want to relax and socialize with friends over a meal, or grab something quick on the way to class, you will find a variety of delicious food options at the Mount. Our quick cuisine in the Seton Café offers everything from hot meals to boxed lunches. The Rosaria Dining Hall offers continuous all you care to eat choices without the hassle of tracking food dollars and meal swipes. This option lets you pay per meal or with a meal plan membership if you prefer. Hands-on learning is at its core. You will get out of the classroom and into work placements, research projects and professional association activities. There are two programs for you to consider: dietetics and nutrition. If you re thinking of a career as a registered dietitian, dietetics is for you. With the Mount, you will complete up to a year s worth of internship hours in one of the largest dietetic internship programs in Canada. If you re open to other career options, nutrition may be best. 27 I felt like I needed to help in my community. A lot of youth are not ready to be junior leaders, so I decided to design a program to teach them what helped me. It s called Youth Step Up. We go on trips and outings, and I design projects and quizzes for them. You will have 12 months of paid work experience with our Co-operative Education program. The BPR is the premiere credential for public relations and corporate communication professionals in Canada and is recognized internationally. 29 Bachelor of Science (Science Communication) The Bachelor of Science (Science Communication) is one of the Mount s newest programs. An interdisciplinary degree, the BSc (Science Communication) is unique among both communication and science programs in Canada. Science is a part of our everyday lives and affects many of the decisions we make on a daily basis, and yet science is widely misunderstood. The goal of science communication is to improve the public understanding of science. Our students learn critical thinking, problem-solving, science writing and campaign planning. In addition, you will improve your own science literacy by studying a wide variety of sciences and by choosing a personal interest to focus on from biology, chemistry or psychology. Graduates may move directly into science communication positions in private organizations, government or media, or pursue further professional or graduate education in areas such as law, medicine, dentistry, health administration, health promotion, media studies. My experiences at the Mount better prepared me for my future career and greatly assisted me in being accepted to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at the Atlantic Veterinary College. Brittni Milligan, BSc 11 Science is part of almost everything we see in the world around us - from the plane that takes you to your vacation destination to the smart phone in your pocket. If you are interested in learning about the world around you, then a Bachelor of Science degree is for you. Science looks at the big questions we all face today - from how to tackle global warming to how to treat the widespread diseases that plague our world s population. A Bachelor of Science degree will not provide you with answers to all these questions but it will teach you how to frame the problems and how to apply the scientific method to them so you can join in the search for solutions. Bet your favourite teacher did that for you! The BEd is a two-year program for which you must already have an undergraduate degree to enter. For most, it provides professional preparation to become certified to teach for the public schools. For others, it leads to graduate studies in education, in such fields as curriculum studies, educational psychology, or educational foundations. 34 General admission requirements to the Mount if you ve graduated from a Canadian high school Grade 12 English with a minimum grade of 65%. Four additional Grade 12 academic subjects with a minimum grade of 60%. Overall average of 70% (students with an average of 65% to 69% are considered on a case-by-case basis). Special admission information for Iinternational, Mature and Transfer Students: International students must have completed high school with university preparatory level courses and must submit the official transcripts. If English is not your first language, you must have an acceptable score in the Test of English as a Foreign language (TOEFL), Michigan English Language Test, CanTest, The International English language Training Systems (IELTS), or the Canadian Academic English Language Test (CAEL). Mature students must meet with an academic advisor and submit an official transcript of their high school marks. Transfer students must submit transcripts of all post-secondary education and course descriptions. You must also be in good academic standing, with a GPA of at least 2.0 or 70%, and meet individual program requirements. Please note that transfer credits not under a 2+2 or articulation agreement are assessed on an individual basis after you have been accepted to the Mount. You can transfer up to half of a program. International Baccalaureate (IB) students will be accepted with a predicted score of 24 or above.
