Spend an afternoon on our campus and you ll meet professors who are active leaders, spearheading the advancement of women in science, developing caregiving policy for our seniors, and teaching non-profit organizations how to use social media to protect the environment. Become a Mount student and you ll make friends from around the globe, with students like yourself who joined the Mount because like you -- they wanted a safe, caring, exceptional university where everyone has something to contribute. Amy Tattrie did her homework when selecting a university. While in high school, Amy investigated several universities and kept coming back to the Mount. She visited the campus several times, including both Open Campus Day events. The Mount s relaxed campus with small class sizes and a variety of extracurricular activities sealed her decision. With just one year under her belt, Amy already feels like she s made a home at the Mount. Living in residence played a big part in this, and Amy believes on-campus living is a great option for first-year students. You ll find an immediate community. It s not as scary as you might think, she says. Read Amy s story at msvu.ca/amytattrie 4

5 YOU VE GOT TO STAND OUT. YOU VE GOT TO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND. THE MOUNT SUPPORTS YOUR QUEST TO DO THAT. That first venture gave Kevin a taste for life as an entrepreneur, I realized I liked working for myself, it didn t feel like work to me. Bringing big ideas to life As a high school senior from Cambridge, Nova Scotia, Kevin Robinson had no plans to become an entrepreneur. Cut to four years later and Kevin is on track to become one of Nova Scotia s most promising business leaders. During his second year of studying Business Administration at the Mount, Kevin placed first at the Elevator Pitch Competition organized by the Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development (CEED). Kevin presented the winning concept of a business he had launched called The Helping Hand; a servicebased business that assisted with household jobs requiring physical labour. MY PROFESSORS KNOW ME BY NAME. Kevin has since launched two other business initiatives: Distractions, a publication that provides advertising space for businesses to target community members and Finishing Touch Auto Care, a car detailing service with a strong client base. 14 CONNECTED TO OUR COMMUNITY Overlooking the Bedford Basin, the Mount campus is a short 15-minute bus ride from downtown Halifax. Community outreach is a big part of life at the Mount. The University works alongside organizations such as Feed Nova Scotia, the Centre for Women in Business and the United Way to foster the learning experiences of the Mount community. The University recently established its first community garden, providing students and staff with access to sustainably-managed food. Caritas Day: A History of Giving Back Every January, members of the Mount community participate in a day of caring, also known as Caritas Day. In 1951, the Mount found itself searching for a place to go after a devastating fire burnt down the only building on campus at the time. People all over Halifax opened their doors to host students and classroom lectures. The community s response was so inspirational to the Mount community that the Sisters of Charity established Caritas Day to remember these tremendous acts of kindness. Every year on this day, Mount students volunteer with local community organizations such as Feed Nova Scotia, and in 2012, a group travelled to New York City to work with the city s homeless population. It s great to have a mix of professors on campus. Some are true academics and others, like myself, are instructors who also work professionally on a daily basis. Janice Landry, Part-time instructor in the Department of Communication Studies, journalist, and owner of Groundhog Productions Fellow Mount grads span all sectors of the workforce, creating constant opportunities for big collaborations. 27 I felt like I needed to help in my community. A lot of youth are not ready to be junior leaders, so I decided to design a program to teach them what helped me. It s called Youth Step Up. We go on trips and outings, and I design projects and quizzes for them. Derico Symonds, BACY 12, on a program he designed for up and coming junior leaders Bachelor of Arts (Child and Youth Study) The only degree of its kind in Atlantic Canada, the Bachelor of Arts (Child and Youth Study) program offers theoretical and practical knowledge with an emphasis on learning, communication and critical thinking skills. The program requires more than 500 hours of practicum experience in settings including diverse child care centres, pre-schools, family centres, early intervention programs, youth programs, and health care settings. Some graduates go on to study social work, education, speech and language and occupational therapy or go on to take the Master of Arts in Child and Youth Study at the Mount. You will have 12 months of paid work experience with our Co-operative Education program. The BPR is the premiere credential for public relations and corporate communication professionals in Canada and is recognized internationally. In 2012, the Mount was one of the first three institutions in Canada to receive the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) Seal of Recogntion for demonstrating an alignment of our coursework and experiential learning to the values, knowledge and skills necessary for PR practitioners. It can be challenging to communicate scientific information in an accessible way. At the Mount, if you can dream it there is no reason why it can t happen. Everyone will come together to help you out. Kyle Rogers, BScSC 13 I created Symmetry because I wanted to bring students closer together in a forum where they can express ideas that they don t necessarily get to express in class. 29 Bachelor of Science (Science Communication) The Bachelor of Science (Science Communication) is one of the Mount s newest programs. An interdisciplinary degree, the BSc (Science Communication) is unique among both communication and science programs in Canada. Science is a part of our everyday lives and affects many of the decisions we make on a daily basis, and yet science is widely misunderstood. The goal of science communication is to improve the public understanding of science. Our students learn critical thinking, problem-solving, science writing and campaign planning. In addition, you will improve your own science literacy by studying a wide variety of sciences and by choosing a personal interest to focus on from biology, chemistry or psychology. Graduates may move directly into science communication positions in private organizations, government or media, or pursue further professional or graduate education in areas such as law, medicine, dentistry, health administration, health promotion, media studies. You will fill a gap in Canada s need for science communicators and develop an exciting career for yourself. For more information visit msvu.ca/sciencecommunication Career options for you... researcher, physician, environmentalist, documentary maker, health activist, educator, research coordinator, lawyer *some of these careers may require further study 29

30 BACHELOR OF SCIENCE The Mount gave me opportunities to both develop and demonstrate my leadership abilities. My experiences at the Mount better prepared me for my future career and greatly assisted me in being accepted to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at the Atlantic Veterinary College. Brittni Milligan, BSc 11 Science is part of almost everything we see in the world around us - from the plane that takes you to your vacation destination to the smart phone in your pocket. If you are interested in learning about the world around you, then a Bachelor of Science degree is for you. Science looks at the big questions we all face today - from how to tackle global warming to how to treat the widespread diseases that plague our world s population. A Bachelor of Science degree will not provide you with answers to all these questions but it will teach you how to frame the problems and how to apply the scientific method to them so you can join in the search for solutions. If you already know what branch of science interests you the most, then you can focus on that discipline within your Bachelor of Science degree. If you are not yet sure which area of science will be most interesting to you, then the Bachelor of Science degree will allow you to explore many fields within science and see how they are related to each other. Some of the most innovative ideas and exciting advances have come from teams of scientists working together across various disciplines. If you enjoy science, join our Bachelor of Science program and learn how your career in science can make a difference in the world. For more information visit msvu.ca and choose Programs and Departments Career options for you... doctor, psychologist, pharmacist, dentist, teacher, researcher, computer programmer, veterinarian *some of these careers may require further study It was the feel of the classes that surprised me the most. They re interactive and students can speak freely. James Jabalee, BSc (Honours) 12 James Jabalee, recipient of the President s Prize and NSERC Undergraduate Summer Research Award winner. James also won an award to present his honours thesis research at the Experimental Biology Conference in San Diego in April

31 The professors were always very personable with us. I always had a sense of belonging. As a teacher, I would want to make my students feel the same way. Erin Van Dusen, BA 09, BEd 12 Read Erin s story about teaching in Nunavut at msvu.ca/erinvandusen BACHELOR OF EDUCATION Whether you pursue the Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education or in Secondary Education, you will learn how to support student achievement in today s diverse and inclusive classrooms. When I wasn t in school, I felt like I was missing out. My ultimate goals were, and are, to give back to the community and to help kids. I always thought I would be a social worker, but I realized that I could offer the most as a teacher. That s when I decided to go back to the Mount. It just seemed like the right choice. Andrea Colley, Class Valedictorian, BA 10, BEd 12 The BEd program equips you with a solid foundation in core curriculum subjects like Math, Language and Visual Arts, Social Studies and Science. If Secondary Education is your choice, you will specialize in two of the core curriculum subjects. Throughout the program, you will build on this foundation, gaining the expertise and confidence to encourage a love of learning among students with a range of learning styles. Bet your favourite teacher did that for you! The BEd is a two-year program for which you must already have an undergraduate degree to enter. For most, it provides professional preparation to become certified to teach for the public schools. For others, it leads to graduate studies in education, in such fields as curriculum studies, educational psychology, or educational foundations. The Mount s focus on alternative practicum placements in places such as the Red Cross, the Discovery Centre, museums and galleries gives you the opportunity to use your degree in many ways following graduation.
