3 COLLEGE VISITS Informational meetings hosted by the admissions reps from many area colleges will begin taking place at the High School. Students are encouraged to listen to announcements and sign up for these presentations in the guidance office. Our first visits include Olivet, Western Michigan University, Albion, and The University of Michigan. Juniors and Seniors should watch for information about a bus trip to CMU. This will be limited to students who meet the admissions standards at CMU and may require a lottery drawing in order to get a seat on the bus. Details are pending. REACH HIGHER This year the Delton guidance office has been awarded a Reach Higher Grant of $5000. This grant program is designed to encourage a college-going culture and improve college enrollment outcomes. Watch for many special incentives to inspire you to get busy during this important application season. WMU GOLD RUSH Seniors who may be considering Western Michigan University next year are invited to take advantage of their Gold Rush application process. Simply apply online at least 24 hours prior to the WMU admissions rep s visit to DK (September 26) or complete a paper application at school. Bring a copy of your high school transcript along with ACT/SAT scores to our WMU rep on the 26th and receive a phone call with your admission decision within 48 hours! This is typically a 4-6 week process. FAFSA Changes for Parents: Your college bound seniors need your help. Time to get busy with FAFSA!! On Sept. 14, 2015, President Obama announced significant changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA ) process that will impact millions of students. Starting with the application cycle, the following changes will be put in place: Students will be able to submit a FAFSA earlier. Students will be able to file a FAFSA as early as Oct. 1, 2016, rather than beginning on Jan. 1, The earlier submission date will be a permanent change, enabling students to complete and submit a FAFSA as early as October 1 every year. (There is NO CHANGE to the schedule. The FAFSA became available January 1 as in previous years.) Students will use earlier income information. Beginning with the FAFSA, students will be required to report income information from an earlier tax year. For example, on the FAFSA, students (and parents, as appropriate) will report their 2015 income information, rather than their 2016 income information. The following table provides a summary of key dates as we transition to using the early FAFSA submission timeframe and earlier tax information.

4 The NHS Blood Drive will be held on Monday, October 10 in the Aux Gym from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Anyone from the community, staff members and any students who are over the age of 16 are welcome to donate blood. Students under the age of 16 will need to have signed permission from parents. All donors are required to present a valid photo id.

5 CMU Visit: Our first campus visit for this fall is set for October 21. We will take a bus to Central Michigan University for an admissions presentation, 90 minute campus tour, Q & A with CMU students, and lunch in one of their dining halls. Sign up in the guidance office for this great event. The trip is open to 50 Juniors and Seniors who meet CMU admissions criteria and are in good standing this year at Delton. CMU's admissions standards are a 3.3 GPA and a 22 ACT or 1150 SAT score. If more than 50 students sign up we will use a lottery to determine who attends with Seniors getting priority consideration. If extra seats are available we will be able to take students who are just below those numbers. Juniors and seniors who have the possibility or interest in being a college athlete need to set up their account at the NCAA Clearinghouse. Don't delay on this important step or it could cost you opportunities to play at the next level. Go to to create an account. Veteran s Day Assembly: Mark your calendar! The Veteran s Day program will be Nov 10th at 1:30 in the HS Gym.

6 Scholarships can open doors for students who might not be able to afford college, and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation provides one of the largest scholarships in the country for high-achieving students with financial need.over half (54 percent) of the students who won the Jack Kent Cooke College Scholarship last year had taken the PSAT/NMSQT and were discovered through Student Search Service.The Cooke College Scholarship seeks out underrepresented students of all races, backgrounds, and ethnicities using the PSAT/NMSQT. The Cooke College Scholarship Offers up to $40,000 per year for four years of undergraduate study at any accredited college or university Can be used toward total cost of attendance, not just tuition, room, and board Supports study-abroad programs and internships A chance to receive $50,000 a year for graduate study, up to four years Scholarship Essay Contest: I am happy to introduce the Fleet Reserve Associations patriotic theme essay contest. The theme for this year s essay contest is WHAT MEMORIAL DAY MEANS TO ME. The contest is open to all students in grades 7 through 12. The Grand National prize for this contest is $5,000 with additional cash prizes awarded at the local, regional and national levels for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each grade. The Fleet Reserve Association is a national organization comprised of current and former enlisted members of the United States Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Please feel free visit the Fleet Reserve Association website at Essays must be postmarked on or before December 1, 2016 in order to be considered. If you have staff or students interested in participating, I will be happy to provide the essay flyer, essay rules and entry cover sheet for this year s essay contest.

7 Start The Year Off Right: Parents play a huge part in their student s success. Take time to talk to your kids about school so that they know that you value what they do there. 16 Veterans and First Responders to Be Honored at the Football Game: On Friday, September 16 at our Varsity football game at DK vs Fennville, we will be taking a moment before the game to acknowledge, and honor, our Veterans, our Police, our Fire Department and all First Responders for their efforts throughout the year in making our communities safe. We are asking that all of those folks meet at the south end of the football field, by the flag pole, at 6:30 pm. Admission to the game will be free for those that are taking part in the ceremony. 22 PSAT v SAT: Do You Know the Difference? Around the start of every school year, we hear the question: what s the difference between the PSAT and the SAT? Lucky for you, we ve got answers. Before we look at the nitty gritty, the most important thing to know is that the content of both exams is nearly identical, though the PSAT material is slightly easier. This brings us to another important difference: the top score on the PSAT is a 1520, 80 points lower than the 1600 maximum score on the SAT. Why the disparity? The exams are scored on a uniform scale (known as the Vertical Score Scale, explained in much more detail here), which ensures parity between PSAT and SAT scores, even though the PSAT s content is slightly less difficult. Now to the structural differences, outlined for you in a neat table.
