11 ACE IT Programs Langley School District offers the following Ace It programs Professional Cook 1(new) at WGSS 1 year Hairdressing at ACSS -2 semester program Carpentry at ACSS- 1 semester program Automotive Technician at ACSS -1 semester Piping/Plumbing at LSS-2 semesters Electrical at DW Poppy-1 semester Horticulture at KPU

12 ACE IT Programs All programs except Professional Cook 1 commence second semester of each school year Lunchtime Information Session Feb. 17 in the Career Centre (Parents welcome to attend) Application packages are available in the Counselling and Career Centre. Please see a Ms Mallinson, Ms Wolgram if you are interested. Applications must be returned to the Counselling Centre by April 4 th.

14 SECONDARY SCHOOL APPRENTICE Students work with a qualified Red Seal journeyperson to gain skills, work experience Students can earn up to 16 credits toward graduation Students may be eligible for a Ministry of Education Scholarship with a C+ average Students must find their own job placements Students must be 15 years + See Mr Hetherington, Ms Wolgram and Ms Virgo for more information

15 Work Experience We offer Work Experience 11 and 12 Students will work with a teacher to gain job preparation skills, resume building etc Work experience can be paid or unpaid We are always looking for businesses who would be willing to sponsor students INFORMATION SESSION Will be held in late February Details to come SEE MS WOLGRAM OR MS VIRGO

16 External Credits Are credits earned outside of the school program For more information go to: / Examples Life Guarding Music (Royal Conservatory) Athletic (Competing on Provincial and National Teams)

17 Distributed Learning Are courses taken outside of the student s home school (DW Poppy) Courses can be taken on line or at Continuing Education Centres (Langley Education Centre) Courses with Provincial Exams: students register for the exam at their home school

18 Distributed Learning Students cannot be registered in the same 2 courses. One at their home school and in a DL program Students should check with their counsellor before registering for a DL course Grade 12 students MUST check with each post secondary school they intend to apply to as post secondary schools will have different policies about using a DL course for Admissions

19 Post Secondary Courses Langley and Kwantlen Polytechnic have a program called XCEL Students in Grade 12 can apply to take one or two courses at the KPU Langley campus Requirements B in En 11, SS 11 and Math or Sc 11 Information Session Feb 15 th at lunch in the Career Center(parents welcome) Application packages are available in the Counselling Centre. 21 Planning Gr 11 and Gr 12 Things to consider before choosing your courses It s okay to not know what or where, but it is not okay to not doing anything about it! At Poppy we have resources : Counsellors Career Advisors myblueprint

22 Post secondary Information In BC we have TRADITIONAL POST SECONDARY SCHOOLS: UBC, UVIC AND SFU These schools have specific requirements for admissions to all programs ONLY ONE DOOR for Admissions

23 Comprehensive School UFV, KPU, VIU,TRU, UNBC These schools have two doors for entrance Degree Programs that have specific requirements and GPAs Other programs that are similar to College Entrance Apprenticeship Programs Certificate Programs Diploma Programs

24 Colleges Douglas College, Langara College, Camosun College, Okanagon College These schools have : Apprenticeship programs Certificate programs Diploma programs Degree programs

25 Where Do I Go? It is possible to start at one school and then apply to another. Some post secondary schools have agreements such as the SFU/Douglas Agreement. If accepted one can take courses at either campus. Many students may decide to start at a comprehensive school then apply to a larger, traditional school. For some students the large traditional school is perfect.

26 Where Do I Go? Some students like to stay home and attend a local post secondary, others look forward to the opportunity to move away and spread their wings. Some schools have unique opportunities Langara has an agreement with Sussex University for students who would like to study Law. Two year at Langara + 3 years in Sussex. SFU has several programs with overseas universities connections?

27 Which School is Best? There is no best school. Check out the SFU booklet: All universities and colleges are good Finding the best fit is the biggest challenge.

28 Post Secondary Lingo Certificate Programs are usually 8 to 10 months in length Special Education Teaching Assistant, Legal Assistant, Event Planning Diploma Programs 2 year programs Licensed Practical Nurse, Rehabilitation Assistant, Accounting programs

29 Post secondary Lingo Associate Degree Programs Take 2 years to complete Business Associate, Science, Arts.. Can Ladder into Degree Programs Bachelor Degree or Undergraduate Degree Programs Take 4 5 years to complete Arts, Business, Engineering, Nursing

30 Post Secondary Lingo Professional Programs Require students to have complete some or all of a degree before applying Medicine, Law School, Dental, Architecture, Teaching

31 Admissions What secondary school courses do I need to be able to apply to a post secondary program? Each post secondary school will have specific requirements for different programs The most COMMON programs secondary students apply to are: Arts, Sciences, Engineering, Business, Nursing

32 Languages The most common question : DO I NEED A LANGUAGE TO GRADUATE FROM SECONDARY SCHOOL OR TO ENTER POST SECONDARY? THE ANSWERS: NO FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL GRADUATION MAYBE FOR POST SECONDARY

33 LANGUAGES? UBC AND SFU REQUIRE A LANGUAGE 11 FOR ADMISSIONS CHECK WEBSITES TO SEE WHICH LANGUAGES ARE ACCEPTED NO OTHER POST SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN BC REQUIRE LANGUAGE 11 FOR ADMISSIONS BUT SOME POST SECONDARY PROGRAMS WILL REQUIRE A LANGUAGE FOR GRADUATION AND IF YOU HAVE A LANGUAGE 11 OR A LANGUAGE 12 YOU COULD MEET THAT REQUIREMENT

35 Other Courses The following is a sample of courses can be used to meet Graduation requirements but MAY NOT be used for post secondary admissions. 36 GPA? Your GPA or Admission Average is the average of the required courses for the program to which you are applying. English 12 is always part of your GPA Depending on where you apply the post secondary will use 1, 2 or 3 other academic courses for you Admission Average

37 What Is Required? Science Programs always require: English 12 Pre calculus Math 12 And one or two Science 12 course Engineering programs always require: English 12 PreCalculus Math 12 Chemistry 12 Physics 12

38 What is Required? Arts programs Include studying Psychology, History, Philosophy, Anthropology, Sociology English 12 Plus 2 or 3 other Academic 12 Courses Business Programs English 12 Pre calculus Math 12 1 or 2 other Academic 12 courses

39 What is Required? Nursing Programs: Always require English 12 Chemistry 11(Sometimes Chemistry 12 Biology 12 Math 11 Foundations or Precalculus-

41 REMEMBER It is important that students check the websites of the post secondary schools. Each school can and will have different requirements for Admissions.

42 Entrance Averages Entrance Averages vary at post secondary schools. UBC, SFU and UVIC tend to have higher Entrance Averages than the Comprehensive schools.

43 Entrance Averages Examples of some entrance averages: Sciences 90% (UBC, SFU) Engineering 90% (most Engineering Programs. Arts 80-85% Nursing 90% +

44 Other Entrance Requirements Some post secondary schools and some programs within a post secondary will require students to submit Supplemental Applications. A Supplemental Application may be in the form of a Personal Profile (UBC) or a Broad Based Supplemental (SFU and UVIC) or an online interview (UBC Commerce) Always check websites for more information

45 Are Gr 11 courses important? Grade 11 course grades may not be required for Admissions but When it is time to SELF REPORT GRADES a student may have to report a grade 11 course mark. Some post secondary schools are looking at grade 11 marks. So, Grade 11 courses and grades ARE IMPORTANT.

46 Other? Big Buddy Program: For those students interested in Becoming a Big Buddy with a student at North Otter or Peterson Road Elementary pay attention to the Student Bulletin. There will be an information meeting in April. Encounters with Canada: This is an opportunity to travel to Ottawa to learn more about Canada. Pay attention to the Bulleting as there will be a meeting in April.
