Spring sports include boys and girls track, girls tennis, boys baseball, girls fastpitch, boys and girls golf, and boys soccer. The first day of practice is February 27th. Spring sports clearance will be February 6th-24th. We would like to encourage all the student athletes to pick up their clearance packet as soon as possible. Payment, physicals, and all signed paperwork must be cleared for their specific sport by the 24th.

The Olympia School District is now partnering with the Timberland Regional Library to give every OSD student access to all of the electronic resources our taxpayer money provides. This new program, called MyTRL, went live September 21 st. Students use the following to log in: Username = osd+regular username Ex. osdkbonds Password = birthday month and day Ex *SAT and ACT sample tests can be found in the Learning Library Express database. *Audiobooks and ebooks of novels taught at CHS are available through Overdrive and Hoopla. Get another chapter done while on the bus/in the car to and from school! *Search other subject specific databases such as Student Resources in Context to find book, periodical and primary sources for research assignments. *Read up on current events in magazines from Zinio. *Download 5 free songs per week from Freegal. Students have been and will learn more about it through our school library program. The variety of resources the Timberland Library System provides for both academic and recreational use is rich. This furthers our mission to teach information literacy skills, nurture the love of reading, prepare students to meet state standards, and partner with the 21st century school community to foster lifelong learning and global citizenship. 2 nd verse, same as the 1 st since this was briefly discussed in the last newsletter, but like a great dessert, it s worth taking another scoop! Eat it up!!! Don t forget to check the Daily Bulletin which is updated everyday on our CHS website! CHSPO UPDATE. CHSPO NEEDS YOUR ADDRESS! As a Parent Organization, we are now unable to petition the district for your s. Due to this change in policy, we only have 40 family s for the current freshman class (2020). We also do not have s for numerous families in our other CHS classes. In order for us to contact families, we need you to give us your address. We do rely solely on s to communicate information with parents for activities, specific class information and requests for volunteers for the school and parent org activities involving your students. If you are already on our list or are a member of the CHSPO, you do not need to sign up again. Thank you very much. 5 CHS COUGAR CONNECTION Counseling Center PAGE 5 PSAT RESULTS: On October 15 th, many 10 th -11 th graders elected to take the PSAT as a way to better prepare for the college SAT entrance test that they will take in the spring of their junior year. Students who took the PSAT will be given their scores along with some additional information about the amazing FREE resources PSAT has to offer to prepare for the SAT test and college in general, during the week of December 12th. A PSAT session for an in-person introduction to My College QuickStart will be included in our 9 th /10 th /11 th grade Family Information Night on February 9, Counseling Calendar: December 12-16th -- PSAT Results and Information distribution to students (see the included PSAT article for details) February 9 th --9 th / 10 th / 11 th Grade Family Information Night. 6-8pm at CHS. This event is designed to help communicate the academic options available to students as well as providing knowledge on future planning. Breakout sessions will include: Running Start, International Baccalaureate, New Market Skills Center, NCAA participation, 2 year and 4 year college admissions, Financial Aid, PSAT results interpretation, Beginning the college application process February 8th - 15th -- Senior Interviews. Seniors will be assigned an individual appointment with their counselors. Credits will be reviewed, along with other graduation requirements. Running Start students should contact Mrs. Weeks in the counseling center ( ) to arrange an appointment time. Seniors who are in jeopardy of failing a required course will want to meet with their teachers and counselor to ensure graduation requirements are being met. February 22 - March 3 -- Junior Registration/Credit Checks. Juniors will be assigned an individual appointment with their counselor to register for their courses for the school year. They will receive their registration materials earlier in February along with a presentation explaining our process. Students will need parent signatures on the forms to approve their desired schedule. Counselors will be in contact with parents/guardians if a major change is needed. February - March -- FREE Candyce Lund Bollinger Parent Seminars The Olympia School District will host a series of free parent education workshops this year led by Candyce Lund Bollinger, a local parent educator for the past 35 years. Bollinger will present the following workshops from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Olympia Regional Learning Academy (ORLA), th Ave. S.E., Olympia: Middle/High School Parent Workshops (grades 6-12) Thursday, February 2 Social Media Thursday, March 2 Anxiety, Depression & Stress Thursday, March 30 Teen Relationships/LGBTQ Topics

6 CHS COUGAR CONNECTION CHS Career Center PAGE 6 Career Center News Financial Aid Some of the things we hear from students about financial aid in the Career Center... My parents make too much money, so I won t qualify for aid. Only students with good grades get financial aid. The FAFSA is too hard to fill out. These myths are incorrect, so don t make assumptions about what you ll get fill out the application and find out! Complete your FAFSA online at When you fill this out, you re also automatically applying for funds from your state, and possibly from your school as well. In fact, some schools won t even consider you for any of their scholarships (including academic scholar-ships) until you ve submitted a FAFSA. 5 reasons to complete the FAFSA 1. Federal Student Aid provides more than $150 billion in grants, loans, and work-study funds each year, but you have to complete the FAFSA to see if you can get any of that money. Not to mention, many states, schools and scholarships also use the FAFSA to award financial aid, so every collegebound student should complete it. 2. The FAFSA is free to complete and there is help provided throughout the application. 3. One of the most exciting enhancements has been the launch of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. This tool allows students and parents to save lots of time by accessing your personal IRS tax return infor-mation and transfer data directly into FAFSA from the IRS Web site. 4. The FAFSA only takes about 30 minutes to complete and you could qualify for thousands of dollars in financial aid. Talk about return on investment. 5. More people qualify than you think! If you don t fill out the FAFSA, you could be missing out on a lot of financial aid! Free FAFASA workshops are offered through College Goal Washington. The earlier it is completed the better your chances to receive what funds are available!!!!!

7 CHS COUGAR CONNECTION Page 7 SCHOLARSHIPS!! It s never too early or too late to take a look at scholarships as an option to assist in paying for your post-high school education. The winter/spring is when the Career Center receives numerous privately funded scholarships; most local opportunities are seen during this time frame. Local scholarships are offered by local service clubs, local businesses and private foundations. Scholarships are rolling into the Career Center!! Many scholarships require a letter of recommendation from an employer teacher or community mentor an essay about a specific topic or your plans for the future The average time to complete a scholarship application is approximately 2 hours, most scholarships provide awards on average of $1000, a great investment in your time for the money!! Most applications are not accepted because the instructions were NOT FOLLOWED. The myth is that there will be TOO MANY applicants, so why should I apply? our answer: you can t receive the money if you don t apply. Check the Career Center webpage for the full scholarship list, updated every month! JOBS AND EMPLOYMENT Winter break is a great time to work on your resume so you will be prepared this spring to line up that summer job! The Career Center can help you create an awesome resume and cover letter lunches are a great time to drop by. VOLUNTEER Both underclassmen and upperclassmen should consider exploring your prospective career options, learning more about yourself and making a difference in your community by providing volunteer service in an industry of interest to you. There are numerous opportunities available in a variety of settings around Thurston County. Stop by the Career Center to take a look at current volunteer opportunities, take career interest assessments, and find out how to be an active member of your community! ALL post-secondary options after high school (military, technical schools, baccalaureate, community colleges and employers) hire and look for students who have performed some form of community service! Volunteer experience can help you learn valuable skills that can translate to a JOB! Volunteering may also help you earn scholarships as MOST of them are based on your level of community service & leadership. The Career Center has a bulletin board full of options. You might be interested in one of our fundraising efforts: Pavers in Cougar Court! These pavers area a great way to commemorate a graduating senior, favorite teacher or community member or any one special in your life! Order must be received by May 1 st and the pavers are installed one time a year, before graduation. Help us provide thousands of dollars of scholarships and give a gift that will last forever!
