1 DEPUTY HEAD (ACADEMIC) The Deputy Head (Academic) is responsible to the Headmaster for the academic life of the school. S/he is one of three parallel Deputy Heads at LGS and the post also requires a holistic approach towards education, and the ability to bring together a wide range of staff in pursuit of common goals. The school has a renewed focus on academic standards, and the most important responsibility of the Deputy Head (Academic) is to support Heads of Department, Heads of Year and subject teachers in ensuring that each boy, whatever his innate academic ability, is able to achieve in other words, ensuring that the school adds value. S/he will be responsible for developing academic data tracking systems in the school in liaison with the Director of Studies and the Data Manager. In addition, an essential focus of this post is to ensure the highest quality of teaching and learning provision. In recent years at Loughborough Grammar School, excellent work has been done by the Teaching and Learning committee in promoting evidence-based best classroom practice, and the new appointee will work very closely with its members. The successful applicant is likely to have had success either at Assistant Head level or as head of a large department in an academic school, and will be able to provide evidence of raised pupil achievement in his/her area. S/he will also have experience of working on whole-school or cross-curricular initiatives and applicants should refer to such experiences in their letters of application. Furthermore, experience in more than one school is likely to be an advantage. It is likely that the successful candidate will progress to Headship within 4-6 years. The Deputy Head (Academic) will be a member of the Executive Management Team and Strategic Leadership Team (SLT). S/he will lead the Academic Management Team and chair the HoDs Committee. S/he will act as Secretary for termly meetings of the LGS Board. The successful candidate will teach approximately one-third of a full timetable, although the appointment will be made without reference to the subject specialism of the candidate. Person specification Experience in successfully leading and managing a team Evidence, as a middle or senior manager, of creating a culture of high achievement Capable of taking the initiative, challenging unsatisfactory conduct or performance and leading and managing change Proven ability to work under pressure Excellent oral and written communication skills Evidence of ability to think and plan strategically Has initiative, imagination, energy, enthusiasm, optimism, resilience and commitment Is a skilled and sensitive communicator, capable of persuading others to accept and adopt different methods and approaches, if needed Creativity in resolving difficulties Have the inter-personal skills and values that enable him/her to work effectively with others and get the best from them Evidence of recent (ie last 3 years) professional development (eg achievement of, or working towards, leadership qualifications such as ISQAM/NPQH) Detailed knowledge of current initiatives in education, especially in raising standards and achievement A highly credible subject teacher, with evidence of pupils meeting or exceeding their target grades

2 Loughborough Grammar School Loughborough Endowed Schools (LES) is a charitable foundation of four independent schools comprising Loughborough Grammar School (boys, 10-18, day and boarding), Loughborough High School (girls, 11-18), Fairfield Preparatory School (co-educational, 3-11) and Our Lady s Convent School (coeducational 3-11, girls 11-18). Loughborough Grammar School was established in 1495 alongside the Parish Church and moved to its current campus 10 minutes walk from the town centre in During the past 20 years, a considerable amount of building has provided teaching facilities that are the envy of schools in the region. LGS educates just under 1000 boys. Following the abolition of Grammar Schools in the early 1970s, the school elected to become independent, but has retained its name in recognition of the pride it feels in its traditions dating back more than five centuries. Considerable financial support is offered to families through the LES Schools Assisted Places scheme. Loughborough High School and Our Lady s Convent School were both founded in 1850, whilst Fairfield Preparatory School has been an autonomous school since The schools are situated on two neighbouring campuses on the south side of Loughborough. They enjoy an excellent reputation for their academic, cultural and sporting achievements, and for the quality of their pastoral care. An extensive transport system for pupils operates across the East Midlands. The Loughborough Endowed Schools Foundation is engaged in an ongoing programme of improvements to its facilities. Significant investment has been made in a state-of-the-art science park and a dedicated Music School; and at Fairfield, a 10m new school building has been completed, housing a brand new Kindergarten for children age 3+ which opened in January A new nursery for children from birth to four years opened in autumn The Loughborough Endowed Schools Foundation employs over 600 staff in teaching and non-teaching roles. Loughborough and the East Midlands Loughborough is a thriving university town of over 60,000 people (supplemented by 15,000 students in term time) with a feel with a much larger conurbation, very well provided for with amenities including two cinemas, a very wide range of shops and restaurants. The three cities of the East Midlands (Leicester, Nottingham and Derby) are all half an hour away by car less by train, and all include outstanding cultural and sporting venues. The town itself is surrounded by picturesque villages in the rolling Leicestershire countryside. The East Midlands are extremely well connected to the rest of the country through an excellent network of transport links. Loughborough is 75 minutes by train from St Pancras in London, and the M1 lies only 3 miles from the town centre. East Midlands international airport is just to the North of the town. In addition, this is one of the rare regions in England where property prices remain at an affordable level for teachers with young families.

3 Job Description Academic Day-to-day management of all academic matters Developing and implementing strategies to raise academic standards and to deliver excellence in relation to teaching and learning Oversight of all aspects of the school curriculum including the production of the timetable, in liaison with the Director of Studies and the timetable To conduct annual review meetings with Heads of Department each Autumn Term To Liaise regularly with SENCO To lead departmental audits with the support of SLT members Overseeing the production of academic Key Performance Indicators for Governors To advise the Headmaster on academic staffing matters and to take responsibility for the production of recruitment information, such as job descriptions Tracking of pupil achievement and effort grades, working with the Director of Studies and Heads of Year To develop the use of data (from MidYIS, ALIS and internal tracking) to drive school improvement and to support Heads of Department and Heads of Year to do the same To narrow the gap, where appropriate, between the progress of different groups of students, and the development of strategic interventions for those identified as potentially underachieving. To advise parents and boys on subject options and to work with the Head of Sixth Form and Head of Careers in supporting the students transition from GCSE to A Level and beyond. Teaching and Learning Ensuring that learning and assessment are excellent across the school, specifically through lesson observation and work scrutiny Developing, leading and managing effective strategies to improve standards of teaching across the full age range of boys Promotion of creativity, innovation and the use of emerging technologies in learning and teaching, in liaison with the Teaching and Learning committee To promote a culture of independent learning, and to liaise with the Head of PSHE and Heads of Year to create a whole-school programme of study, thinking and revision skills. Responsibility for the school s Teaching and Learning policy: its monitoring, review and evaluation Leadership and Management Oversight of teaching staff appraisal Line management and performance management of Heads of Departments (the Assistant Head Academic takes this role with certain HoDs by agreement) Line management of the Director of Studies Development of a HoDs training programme To oversee the work of the member of staff responsible for internal examinations Liaison with the other Loughborough Endowed Schools on academic matters

4 Admissions and Development Supporting the Director of Admissions in making decisions on admissions of pupils Responsibility for the quality of academic papers being used for Admissions and Scholarship Academic responsibility for Easter revision courses, in liaison with the Commercial Manager Other points from the confirmed Academic action plan General Responsibilities of a Member of SLT Represent the agreed values and vision of the Senior Leadership Team to the school community and be seen to be translating our vision and values into practice Demonstrate and role model constructive leadership behaviours Ensure sound budgetary and broader financial management in all areas for which he/she is responsible Promote, contribute to, and lead any staff INSET or induction as may be required Provide encouragement, support and assistance to colleagues at all levels Lead school assemblies as required Organise, attend and assist with major school events as required Contribute to school and national publications Assisting with appointment of academic staff Helping to maintain standards of pupil dress, punctuality etc. Performance Management of staff (leading appraisals and other official processes as required) Contributing to the school development plan, implementation and review School holidays on call rota and working during school holidays as required to fulfil one s responsibilities Support for the school s co-curricular programme by attending school events (plays, concerts, matches etc.) Chairing review groups as required Responding to reference requests as required (pupils and staff) Representing the school on national or governing bodies Undertaking any other duties which fall within his/her capabilities and which may reasonably be required by the Head Expectations Teachers at Loughborough Grammar School are expected to teach their subject[s], to act as tutors, to be attached to day houses, and to make a substantial contribution to the co-curricular programme. We have 65 boarders in two boarding houses; a desire to contribute to our boarding provision is welcomed and remunerated separately. Although hours of work are not specified precisely, the working day begins with registration at 8.30 am. Lessons end at 4.00 pm and all full-time teachers are expected to be on site during this period and to attend school assemblies. However, staff should regularly expect to be in school after 4.00 pm to assist pupils who require additional support and to help with activities. All boys are required to have left the campus by 5.30 pm and this should be seen as a healthy time by which to have gone home oneself. Outside of the formal term times, staff are expected to be in for INSET days and to be available to fulfil any reasonable duties. As with any school,

5 there are occasional evening events, and two Saturdays per year (Open Day and Sports Day) when attendance is expected from all teaching staff. The school seeks to set the highest professional standards in every respect. The safeguarding of pupils is our overarching priority. All staff on appointment are required to undertake an enhanced-dbs check according to national regulations, and are required to attend annual child protection training. Terms and Conditions The Loughborough Endowed Schools have their own salary scale above that of the maintained sector. Service with the school is pensionable in accordance with the Teachers Pension Scheme. Members of staff are entitled to a substantial reduction in fees for their children at any of the 4 Foundation Schools (pro-rata for part-time employees) Members of staff may use the school s sports facilities including swimming pool (at staff allocated times).
