1 CREATIVE ARTS GUILD STUDENT ARTS EXPO 2016 Friday, April 15 Friday, April 29, 2016 April is Arts in Education Month at the and the 53rd annual Student Arts Expo is a big part of the celebration. All students in Whitfield/Dalton and Murray County, public, private and home school students are invited to exhibit their art. Attached you will find information regarding. This includes exhibit and reception information, general guidelines and SAE forms for: Student Arts Expo, Pre K 12 th Grade, with inventory form and tags for art work, and letter teachers may send to parents of participating students. Art Together Collaborative Classroom Project Competition, Pre K 12 th Grade, with inventory form and tags for art work, letter to be sent to parents of participating students. Bernice Spigel Prize in the Visual Arts for High School Seniors, with inventory form and tags for art work. All Pre-K through 12th grade exhibitions will be on display April 15 April 29 to allow time for families and friends to see the student artwork. Elementary and Middle Schools will exhibit in the Performance Hall and High School students will be in the Main Gallery, the Bernice Spigel Prize in the Visual Arts recipient will exhibit a body of work in Gallery 111. The Student Arts EXPO 2016 student art exhibitions will be open to the public at the, Monday Thursday, 10:00 am 6:00 pm and Friday, 10:00 am 4:00 pm. Please call the Guild to schedule field trips, Student Artists Awards will be posted for the Friday Artist Reception April 15, 5:30 7:30. Winners attending the reception will be recognized K-8 at 6:00 in the Jonas Performance Hall and grades 9 12 and the Bernice Spigel Prize in the Visual Arts recipient will be recognized at 7:00 in the Gallery.

2 GENERAL GUIDELINES Pre K - Grade 8 Each school may send work equal to 5% of their student population or two pieces per grade level - whichever is greater. One work per student. All two dimensional artworks must be mounted on construction paper no smaller than 8½ x 11 and no larger than 20 x 24. We have a limited number of tables available for three dimensional artworks. All entries must have an identification tag (attached) which corresponds to the school s inventory list(attached). Grades 9 12 Each school may enter work equal to 5% of their student school enrollment or max of 20 entries - 5 per grade level, one per student. All two dimensional artworks must be securely mounted on mat board and must be able to be installed by push pins or an easel must be provided by the school. Framed artwork must be wired for hanging. Please contact the Guild regarding oversized art work parameters, INSTALLATION Teachers for grades Pre K 8 are responsible for hanging their own work. Guild staff will install high school work, Spigel winner is responsible for installing exhibit. In order to preserve our walls please bring work that can be secured with push pins (supplied by the Guild). Framed pieces should be displayed on easels or be appropriately wired for hanging. The Guild has a limited number of easels, if your students need an easel for display; plan to provide your own. All art work must be tagged and listed on the inventory sheet (see enclosed tags and inventory sheet). INVENTORY FORMS Please have the identification tags and inventory sheet(s) completed prior to bringing art work to the Creative Arts Guild. Inventory sheets must be provided for each school by grade level, including ART TOGETHER entries. An inventory form must be completed for each Bernice Spigel Scholarship artist. AWARDS First, second, third and honorable mention place ribbons will be awarded in each grade level. Awards are made based on the student s ability to use the materials, an understanding of art history or the student s place in his/her world and innovative individual expression. At least one judge from outside the local education arena will make the selections.

3 ART TOGETHER Collaborative Classroom Competition Guidelines The and the O.N. Jonas Foundation sponsor an arts competition for collaborative classroom projects. The winning classroom in each division will receive a $100 cash award to be used for an artist in residence fee, art supplies or other classroom art activity resources during the school year. Each school may submit up to one entry per classroom. Categories: Grades Pre K - 2; Grades 3-5; Grades 6-8; Grades 9-11 Artwork is displayed as part of Student Arts EXPO. Please ensure that the artwork and subject matter are appropriate for children pre-school age and up. Entries may be two or three dimensional. All entries must include the appropriate hanging material. Entries must be labeled with the students names, school, grade level and teacher s name. Each school is responsible for delivery, installation, and pick-up of entries at the in accordance with the timeline included for the regular art exhibit. Each winning classroom in the above categories will receive a $100 award. SECOND FRIDAY RECEPTION Friday, April 15, 5:30 7:30 ART PICK UP Monday-Tuesday, May 2-3 All work MUST be picked up by Tuesday, May 3 by 3:00 pm

4 2016 BERNICE SPIGEL SCHOLARSHIP IN THE VISUAL ARTS BERNICE SPIGEL PRIZE IN VISUAL ARTS ACADEMIC YEAR GUIDELINES Please read guidelines carefully, changes are marked with * 1. ELIGIBILITY $1000 WILL BE AWARDED TO WINNER All students in the 12th grade who are attending school (public or private) or residing in Whitfield or Murray Counties are eligible to enter. The prize is based solely on the quality of the artwork submitted for consideration. Entrants should submit at least six (6) and no more than twelve (12) original works of art, their sketchbooks and an artist statement on Tuesday, February 23 or Wednesday, February 24 by 5:00 pm. Works may be created either as a part of the student s art classes or as self-directed work. Entrants should attach a label to the back of each work of art submitted see attached. Works may be from any visual arts genre, e.g., painting, sculpture, collage, drawing, pastels, etching, photography, prints, installation, mixed media works, installation displays and video, light or computer generated visual art. Artists may frame or mat works on canvas or paper, but this is not a requirement. IMPORTANT There are no stipulations concerning size, form or content of work submitted. Freedom of expression is celebrated through this competition. No genre or style will be judged preferentially. Each student submitting work for consideration will have at least one work selected by the Spigel Prize judges to be displayed at the s annual Student Arts Expo, April 15 through April 29. *The Spigel Prize recipient will be offered a solo exhibition in the Guild s Gallery 111 during Student Arts Expo with a shared Friday, April 15 opening reception for the month of April Student may choose to have an additional reception on a date of their choice, but must be coordinated with the. 2. JUDGING * All entries will be subjected to a 2-part judging process 1. Part 1 will consist of a review of the candidates portfolios and artist statements by a panel of judges. Submissions will be evaluated based on the technical merit and creative expression of submitted works. During this process judges will consider the variety of work included in each portfolio submitted, the mastery of technique shown and the thoughtfulness of the submitted artist statement. Judging will be anonymous. All judging is, by its very nature, subjective. 2. Candidates that are selected to move to Part 2 of the judging process will be asked to participate in an interview with a judging panel. The interview will give each selected candidate an opportunity to discuss their portfolio including their artistic choices, technique and connection to the work. 3. Judges may elect not to present an award if they feel that the caliber of the work submitted does not merit recognition. The decision of the judges is final. The winner will be notified through his/her school art instructor. 3. AWARD The Spigel Prize recipient will be awarded $1000, a symbol of the honor, and will be granted the opportunity to present a solo exhibition in the Guild s Gallery 111 during the annual Student Arts Expo April Opening reception will be Friday, April 15.

5 4. OTHER The Guild will promote the recipient of the Spigel Prize online and in local media. The Guild reserves the right to reproduce photographs of submitted artwork for promotional purposes only but with no goal of financial remuneration. The Spigel Prize recipient attending the Student Art Expo opening will be asked to pose for a photograph and to consent to a brief interview for promotional purposes. QUESTIONS?
