9 DIPLOMA TYPES: HOW DO YOU DECIDE? Choose the most challenging courses your student can handle. Aim for the highest diploma your student thinks they can achieve. Take core classes every year. Consider their previous academic and SOL test performance.
10 ENGLISH, SOCIAL STUDIES, & SCIENCE OPTIONS: Two levels of core courses offered for 9 th grade students: Academic Honors or Pre-AP Strongly consider teacher and counselor recommendations Reading level and work ethic are key factors in deciding which level of courses a student should take
11 SCIENCE EARTH SCIENCE OR BIOLOGY It is recommended that 9 th grade students take Earth Science which is the first course in the science sequence. Earth Science and Biology are taught at the Academic and Honors Level. Biology can only be taken at the Honors level for 9 th grade students and requires teacher recommendation.

13 WORLD LANGUAGE Most four-year colleges prefer that you have a minimum of three (3) years of a World Language. Some competitive colleges want 4 or 5 years. Spanish, French, German, and Latin are offered through the Advanced Placement (AP) level in Loudoun County. American Sign Language and Mandarin Chinese are each offered for 3 years
14 ACADEMIC VS. HONORS Is this one of your student s favorite courses? Do they have the work habits (willing to study & do homework daily in this subject)? Are they comfortable moving at a quicker pace? Are they motivated to understand material rather than just memorize it? Are they a strong reader & writer? Are they up for more challenging projects & papers? Are they willing to do summer assignments?
15 ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) COURSES College-level courses completed while in high school Strengthens development of reading, writing, critical thinking, and analytical skills needed for college Requires a substantial investment of student effort and time Colleges may award college credit for completion of AP courses if students earn a qualifying score on the exam The 1st AP course students are eligible to take is AP World History in 10th grade. Pre-AP World History/Geography 1 will best prepare students for AP World History

21 EXPUNGING HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL YEARS Students entering the 9th grade for the first time have a one-time chance to remove high school classes/credits that are earned in middle school. Students/parents will be given a form later this year to complete if they want to take advantage of this opportunity. Forms must be completed and returned no later than mid-august Once high school begins, this opportunity ends.
