4 Mission Statement The NJSIAA, a private, voluntary Association serves its student-athletes, members schools and related professional organizations by the administration of education-based interscholastic athletics, which support academic achievement, good citizenship and fair and equitable opportunities. We believe that member schools, along with their leagues and conferences, share these convictions: A safe and healthy playing environment is essential to our mission. Participation in interscholastic athletics enhances the educational experience of all students. Interscholastic athletics is a privilege. Excellence in both academics and athletics is pursued by all. Interscholastic participation develops good citizenship and healthy lifestyles, fosters involvement of a diverse population and promotes positive school/community relations. Rules promote fair play and minimizes risks. Cooperation among members advances their individual and collective well-being. Training of administrators and coaches promotes the educational mission of the interscholastic experiences. Properly trained official/judges enhances interscholastic competition. The NJSIAA is the recognized state authority on interscholastic athletic programs. The NJSIAA is composed of 435 member high schools. It provides more than 270,000 student-athletes opportunities to participate in nearly 3,000 games, workshops, clinics and other NJSIAA-sponsored activities within a given year. The NJSIAA offers more championships for its student-athletes than any other state in the nation: For Boys: Cross-Country, Football, Soccer, Basketball, Bowling, Fencing, Ice Hockey, Swimming, Diving, Indoor Track Relay Championships, Indoor Track Individual Championships, Wrestling, Baseball, Golf, Lacrosse, Outdoor Track Championships, Tennis, and Volleyball. For Girls: Cross-Country, Field Hockey, Gymnastics, Soccer, Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Bowling, Fencing, Swimming, Diving, Indoor Track Relay Championships, Indoor Track Individual Championships, Golf, Lacrosse, Softball, and Outdoor Track Championships. Competitive athletics is nothing more than playing according to a set of rules. Sports are the greatest example on earth of the practical application of the Golden Rule. 12 2016 LEGENDS COACH Melissa Landeck: Melissa became the Head Coach of the Old Tappan High School girls volleyball program in 1998 and continues in that position today. Coach Landeck guided the girls team compiling a current record of 362 wins and 76 losses, an impressive 83%. As a graduate of Cliffside Park High School she was named as a member of the school s Hall of Fame which led her to a scholarship at Seton Hall University as a member of the Women s Softball Team until her graduation in Melissa s accomplishments as a coach speak to her qualifications for this award. Her teams won five NBIAL divisional championships and another five when her team became a member of the Big North. Her teams were always in the mix in the Bergen County Volleyball Championships, with eight semi final and five final appearances. Her teams took that coveted trophy home three times. On the state level, the Golden Knights were five time Group 3 Sectional Champions and reached the semi-finals and finals eight times. They brought home the Group 3 Championship trophy a total of three times which enabled them to compete in the Tournament of Champions rounds which they won twice. Melissa s coaching success has been recognized on various levels within New Jersey and on the national level. She was the Bergen County Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2015 and the New Jersey State Coaches Association Coach of the Year in She was honored as the NJ State Coach of the Year in She was also honored by the National Federation of High Schools in both 2005 and Melissa serves as the Head Softball Coach for Old Tappan and has attained success in that sport as well. She is an active member of the Bergen County Women Coaches Association where she has served in numerous positions including President. On the state level, she is on the seeding committee for the NJSIAA tournaments in both volleyball and softball. When she has the time, she teaches mathematics at Old Tappan High school. COACH Andrea Marino: Andrea is currently in her 22 nd year as a Varsity Volleyball Coach, having served in that position at Hawthorne High School for the first eleven years. During her tenure with the Bears, her teams reached and won the 2001 Group II State Championship, earned four Passaic County Championships, and seven BPSL League Championships. As if that was not enough, she then moved to serve as Head Coach of Wood-Ridge High School and continued her success as a coach. Andrea and her Blue Devil teams won one BCSL National Division Championship and two Meadowlands Division Championships. Currently, her overall record stands at She has received a wealth of recognition with 10 Coach of the Year Awards, one Passaic County Coach of the Year for All Sports, six time Passaic County Coach of the Year, one BCSL National Division Coach of the Year, two NJIC Meadowlands Division Coach of the Year, and the 2012 Bergen County Women s Coaching Association Award for Extraordinary Services and Contributions to Female Athletes Award. We are sure this legend award will be the icing on the cake for her. Andrea is married to her husband Ed and they have two children, Andrew and Madylin.

13 PLAYER Carolyn Mooney Carolyn was a four year varsity starter, opposite hitter and setter at Cherry Hill High School from 2002 to She led the Cougars to the Group IV State title in Interestingly, she was coached to the championship by her older brother Scott Mooney, who remains as the Cherry Hill coach today. During her senior year she recorded 214 assists, 110 digs and 104 kills. Her individual honors are extremely impressive: 1 st Team Olympic Conference, All South Jersey Team, Female Scholar athlete, Senior All-Star team and 2 nd Team All State. During the same period she was an active member of the South Jersey Volleyball Club. Initially recruited by Rutgers University, Carolyn later transferred to the University of Pennsylvania where she played as a defensive specialist and setter and was honored as an All Conference player. At Penn, she majored in Systems Engineering and was a recipient of the Women in Engineering Award. Today, she works for Zoomer conducting statistical modeling. Carolyn continues her involvement in volleyball serving as a coach on the high school level in Strath Haven, Pennsylvania and runs the youth volleyball program for the city of Cherry Hill. She is also a coach for the South Jersey Volleyball Club where she has coached 17 and under, 16 and under, and 15 and under. She has served as an assistant coach for Rowan University. Finally, she remains an active player in recreational indoor and beach volleyball. Player Jaime Marzocchi: A 2005 graduate, Jaime was a four-year member of Old Tappan s varsity volleyball team, and a starter for three of them. Jaime was a team captain both her junior and senior years. Over Jaime s four seasons with Old Tappan, she helped the Golden Knights win a NBIAL League Championship and led them to two Bergen County finals, and three consecutive Group 3 State Finals. Her most notable performance came in her senior year during two consecutive matches of the state tournament where she recorded an amazing 48 kills. Overall, Jaime had a serving percentage of over 96% for her career. As a senior, Jaime was named 1 st team all NBIAL; 1 st team all Bergen County and 1 st team All State. She was recognized by both her coaches and teammates as the consummate team player. Throughout her high school years she was enthusiastic, competitive, and respectful toward all. Jaime went on to play varsity volleyball at Salisbury University where she played as both the libero and setter for four years. She also set the record for assists during her junior year in college. She was again honored with conference and regional honors. Jaime continued to serve the volleyball community as a camp counselor/coach for the Northern Valley Summer Volleyball programs. She was also the Varsity Volleyball Coach from 2011 to 2015 at Paramus Catholic, where her teams continued to show marked improvement. Official Scott Scragg Scott began what would become an impressive career as a volleyball official in 1980 when he was instrumental in creating, as a charter member, the NJVBOA-South officials association. He was very active in the growth of the sport in South Jersey High Schools. He worked to provide recreational officials the opportunity to develop as certified volleyball officials. He was a board member of the NJVBOA-South for 18 years where he served as co-assignor, treasurer, and rules interpreter. His expertise was also utilized as a cadet supervisor and mentor. Scott has continually been sought after as a high school official, as he has been requested for numerous tournaments throughout the state. He has officiated multiple state tournament matches including state finals and Tournament of Champion matches and was awarded the NJSIAA Official of the Year for Volleyball. Scott is equally successful as an NCAA Men s and Women s referee and has been nationally certified for Division 1 play since He is also a clinician for NCAA Line Judges and an executive board member for the New Jersey NCAA organization. Scott is married to Denise Scragg, a successful volleyball official in her own right, and they are the parents of two adult sons.

"This means so much to us because we work so hard for this," said Gioiosa. "We stayed committed and gave it our all this season. We're so close as a team and literally do everything together. We're best friends on and off the court." Gioiosa, who came into the match second in the state in kills with 428, recorded an incredible 20 kills in the victory. This state title is Bogota's eighth overall and it has won six of the past seven Group 1 championships. The first set was one with huge momentum swings as Verona kept responding to runs from Bogota. Bogota led 5-4 before four straight points gave the Buccaneers their first separation of the match. The run included a kill from Briana Lozano and consecutive aces by Kaliana Vasquez. Bogota went up 14-8 in the set before Verona scored six of the next eight points to cut that lead to After three of the next five points were scored by Bogota, Verona scored five consecutive points to take its first lead of the set, 20-19, on an ace by Madisyn Matthews. After the first set was tied, 24-24, Gioiosa really took control of the match. Gioiosa had been doing very well up to that point already with eight kills, but she really saved her best for when it mattered most. Gioiosa closed out the first set with consecutive kills to give the first set to Bogota and rode that wave of momentum into the second set. A breathtaking display of volleyball by Gioiosa to begin the second set made sure Bogota would not have to sweat out the set very much. Bogota started off the second set on a 11-3 run and Gioiosa had eight kills, including kills on four consecutive points and on six of the first eight Bogota points. Verona fought off seven consecutive match points down before Bogota was finally able to close it out following a timeout. "I thought we started out pretty well, then hit a little lull," said DiRupo. "They made the first set tight, but we made the necessary plays at the end. I think we controlled the second set, even if it got a little hairy at the end." The Buccanners did a great job defending Carly Waterman of Verona, who was the only player in the state to have more kills than Gioiosa by racking up 455 kills this year coming into the Group 1 final. Bogota will now move onto to the Tournament of Champions on Saturday at William Paterson University and its opponent is to be determined, The Buccaneers lost to River Dell, 2-1, in the first round of the TOC a season ago.

Second-seeded Ramapo, No. 4 in the NJ.com Top 20, defeated top-seeded and No. 1 River Dell, 25-17, 23-25, in a classic state final match. The victory by Ramapo ended River Dell's undefeated season and its run of back-to-back state titles. "It was amazing," said Montgomery. "River Dell is an amazing team and they kept getting all of our balls up. We just kept pushing, fighting and words can't describe what it felt like." "It was probably the most stress I've ever had in an hour period," said Ramapo head coach Dave Van Hook. "I was probably the most excited I've ever been as a coach and this is my 10th year coaching varsity. It was just elation because of the roller coaster ride we had throughout the match." The victory was Ramapo's fifth volleyball state championship in school history with the most recent one coming in Ramapo also won Group 3 state titles in 1998, 1993 and It was an amazing story of perseverance for Ramapo, as River Dell had come back from a deficit in the third set to score six straight points to get right back in it and eventually take a lead. River Dell also had a match point up "It shows that we have so much heart and we wanted to win it so badly," said Montgomery. "We were going to keep fighting no matter what and try to move on from our mistakes. We just kept pushing. Ramapo did not flinch and responded with three straight points after River Dell went up in the third set, including two kills by Gretchen Kincade and one kill by Montgomery. Another great response for Ramapo occurred when River Dell came back from a poor first set to win the second set, 25-23, and the Raiders opened the third set on fire by starting it with a 11-4 run. The Raiders will now continue their season next Saturday at William Paterson University in the Tournament of Champions with an opponent to be determined.

The Golden Knights won their third Group 3 championship in four years. "I'm ecstatic," Old Tappan coach Melissa Landeck said following the victory. "This team has not had it easy. We've had just different challenges presented to us throughout the season. They're a very resilient group. That has been very key to our success." Julia Passante led Old Tappan with 11 kills, while Becky Chu led the Golden Knights with 20 assists. Maya Illovsky added nine kills for the Group 3 winners. "I thought from early on, Julia was connecting with Becky in the middle, so we established our middle attack right away. That helped us take them out of system. When Maya rotated up to the front row, same thing. Becky and Maya connected early. They found some holes in their defense." Old Tappan took a 10-4 lead in the first game, and didn't look back from that point. Landeck credited the team's passing and defense, notably serve receive, following the victory. "I can't say enough about our serve receive," the Old Tappan coach said. "The way their passing, we can run the offense we want to run. Sometimes that goes unnoticed. I think our passing and defense was very good today." Despite not playing Mount Olive this season, Landeck was familiar with her team's opponent after reviewing them on film, and seeing the Marauders in the Morris County Tournament final. "I had a little idea of what kind of team they were," Landeck said. "They're very balanced. They had a real strong outside attack. They played very scrappy defense. "We knew we were going to be in some long rallies, which we were. We knew that not every one would necessarily go our way, but we had to just bounce back if we didn't win a rally. I thought this team did a great job today responding. We responded each time positively." Old Tappan moves on to the Tournament of Champions, where it will await its opponent following the tournament's seeding. The play-in game, consisting of the fourth seed against the fifth seed, will be at 2 p.m. The second seed will face the third seed in one semifinal at 3:30, while the top seed will play the winner of the 4-5 matchup at 5 p.m. All play will be at William Paterson University.

After winning two straight titles, the Red Devils (23-4) lost all-state players Mackenzie Bruzzio, Sarah Walsh, Meagan Kern and All-Group 4 setter Maria Pansari, but second-seeded Hunterdon Central still emerged with its third straight Group 4 state title after beating top-seeded and No. 13 Bridgewater-Raritan in two sets, and 25-18, in the NJSIAA/Wilson Sporting Goods Group 4 final on Saturday afternoon to advance to the Tournament of Champions. "No, (I didn't think we'd make it back)," Hunterdon Central coach Steve Fenton said. "I'm not going to sit here and lie, I lost my entire squad from last year. I was really close with those kids, as my students and as my players. I had no expectations for this team to get here, but as the season began and I was working and working them and they started to believe in the things we were doing. They peaked at the right time and they believed." Daniella Besecker was the only Hunterdon Central player on all three teams, and she played like it, leading the Red Devils with eight digs and adding seven assists, two kills and an ace. "I didn't even realize it until this moment, but (Besecker) has three championships," Fenton said. "I saw her as a freshman and couldn't wait to get her under my wing. For two years she was my backup setter and defensive specialist, and for her to take the reigns this year...she is the reason we're standing here today. Her game is unbelievable, but how much she puts into it is even more." Besecker's role grew in her senior season, and she emerged as a leader for a young team that rebounded from an early season loss to Bridgewater- Raritan and a final defeat to No. 14 North Hunterdon in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament, to beat both in its final two games of the season. Besecker ended the year with a team-leading 343 assists, 34 aces and was second with 130 kills. "It's crazy, I can't even believe it," Besecker said. "This program is about learning from the people that have come before, and obviously I always admired them. Now being on the floor with this new team, which is completely different, I think we showed our strengths and I'm so happy we won. "I think we struggled a lot in the beginning, realizing we needed to work hard for whatever is going to come. We didn't know we were going to get to this point, but once we started to pick up, there was no stopping us." Hunterdon Central won the first set in commanding fashion. It jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start, and held a five-point advantage for the majority of the set before emerging with the win. The second set was more contested, as neither team emerged with more than a threepoint lead before Bridgewater-Raritan went up for its first and only lead of the game. That's when Hunterdon Central won eight-straight to take a lead, and its lead was never lower than five on its way to the win.

It was the 10th consecutive state title for the Golden Eagles. IHA hasn't lost since in the Non-Public tournament since For coach Maria Nolan, who has over 900 wins in her 40-year career, the feeling couldn't be described. "I worried about this all season, especially since we didn't have seniors," Nolan said. "It's not just about this year, but it's about the nine previous state champions. You want to keep it going and do it for those players, too. It's over." The championship didn't come without defeating a quality opponent in Hudson Catholic. In a rematch from a three-set IHA win earlier this season, Hudson Catholic's lone loss coming into the final, the Hawks opened an 11-4 lead. Hudson Catholic continued to be the aggressor, applying pressure and forcing the Golden Eagles into some uncharacteristic errors. Then, the comeback began. Immaculate Heart started chipping away at the lead, cutting the deficit to The two traded points, but IHA was able to tie the opening game at 23 before taking the lead, IHA would win the crucial points from that point to take the opening set, "We weren't playing well," Nolan said. "You could be the best team, but when you get here, it's difficult to play. It's an environment you're not used to. When you get here, sometimes you can't get going." For Nolan, this win means a great to deal to the team - a team composed of mostly underclassmen. "This is great encouragement," Nolan said. "They're excited today. It was such a great win. Hopefully we can keep it going." Catherine Fazio led IHA with 14 kills, while Julia Morris, who leads the state in assists, finished with 20 assists. Erica Timpanaro finished with 16 digs. Immaculate Heart will advance to the Tournament of Champions next week, and will likely be a top seed. "It would be great to (win) it, especially since last year we fell short," Nolan said. "It's difficult to do. To do it without seniors would be truly spectacular."
